Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer." That's a dry, clinical term for what Albini actually does, but it makes sense that he'd prefer to be seen that way. Over the past few decades, Albini has overseen the creation of countless numbers of recorded artifacts. And even though he's been an outspoken opponent of the major-label system (and of other underground-rock heroes), he's known to work with just about anyone who requests his services, whether it's a major-label juggernaut like '90s radio-grunge rulers Bush or the [...]

So, the penultimate entry before Mrs Mackerel finishes off this year's set of Top Ten postings tomorrow is my very own. Without further ado... 10. Milk Music - Beyond Living Although it was released early in the year, I only discovered it recently. A full on, no holds barred, nihilistic 70s punk attitude and the very best of the heavyweight riffs of the grunge era is a mighty powerful combination. One that makes me wish my car stereo went all the way up to eleven. Download Milk Music - Beyond [...]

With probably the longest entry of 2011 we give the floor to regular MM contributor and top ten compiler...Dr Roddy. Well it seems to be that time of year again. I always spend 340 days looking forward to doing this and 25 agonising over it. This year especially though, as I think there has been a bumper harvest of great songs. When I looked at my Top Ten playlist (with over 100 songs in it) I just thought one thing: bugger! I got there in the end though. There have been certain parties that have tried [...]
Based on his recent work with Cloud Nothings, it's no secret that Steve Albini enjoys working with young up-and-coming musicians. His latest venture involves NJ-based trio Screaming Females, as evidenced by a photo gallery on Spin. Albini is helping record their fifth full-length album, the follow-up to 2010?s Castle Talk. Self-professed DIY rockers, Screaming Females

In 48 hours I'll be airborne, flying east towards Newark Airport, set to embark on a lengthy trip that will take me from the East Coast of these United States all the way around the world to Delhi, India. To say I'm excited would be the understatement of the year. I'm really, really looking forward [...]
It's been just over nine years to the day since I first saw Shellac (supported by Nina Nastasia) at the Knitting Factory in New York City. A lot has changed since then. I grew my first pubic hair. I got rid of the weird satin jackets I used to wear all the time. I stopped [...]

As you may have heard, country music lifer Hank Williams, Jr. has parted ways with Monday Night Football , the TV show he spent 20 years singing the intro for, just because he made a totally calm and reasonable parallel between Barack Obama and Adolf Hitler. (He also compared John Boehner to Netanyahu? Whatever.) If you haven't seen the clip of Williams crashing and burning on Fox And Friends , it's absolutely worth your three minutes and 31 seconds, if only for the three anchors' amazing facial expressions during the pivotal moment. [...]
Hey, who said festival season was over? A certain All Tomorrow's Parties event, the inaugural U.S. I'll Be Your Mirror , just took Asbury Park, New Jersey by storm (sort of literally, but that's okay because it was inside!) and it surely qualifies as a festival. That's right, while every other festival is in its 10th year and booking the same 250 acts as the festival preceding it, ATP just swoops in with an unglamorous but effective idea and declares itself a contender for U.S. festival of the year! At least as far as the [...]

As my musical taste has expanded, I've been trying to hit up some of the slightly more off the beaten path festivals that are out there, having been to many of the mega festivals already. So this year, a few of us decided we were going to head to the Jersey shore, more specifically Asbury Park, to check out one of the much lauded festivals thrown by All Tomorrow's Parties. This would be the inaugural US version of the I'll Be Your Mirror festival and this time it was curated by none other than Portishead and it had [...]

photos by Dana (distortion) Yavin Bonnie 'Prince' Billy For those who experienced and loved ATP America's festivals in Monticello, NY, it may have been difficult to imagine how a change of location, from upstate New York to the New Jersey shore, could possibly improve and enhance the unique and uncanny event that it was known to be. Well, it has. Friday afternoon the fans, followers and leaders of All Tomorrow's Parties arrived in Asbury Park, NY, [...]

"Shivery Shellac" is pretty bad, yeah, but "Chilling Shellac" is too much of a tongue twister. So, "Shivery Shellac" it ish. I mean, is. And I could have done a clutching-hand pose with my Giant Eagle monster hand (the store, not the hand type), but I wasn't feeling very Soupy Sales--hence, this more conventional shot. Note the brilliant combination of black furry hand and black shirt in the composition. New 78 rips, all, with half of them new to the blog. [...]

Though the location has changed , the community feel of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival experience is still intact on New Jersey's Asbury Park boardwalk. Though nothing can match the vibe and quarters of Kutsher's - it was like the set of a B-movie horror flick where all festival attendees and participants boarded together - the US debut of ATP: I'll Be Your Mirror definitely has a lot of things going for it. The main venues, the Convention Center and the Paramount Theatre, showcased a couple of special experiences last night, and it certainly doesn't hurt that the rooms [...]

All Tomorrow's Parties - Fist of Tarver of Chavez Asbury Park, Nj Here's a couple photos from last night. I wish I had a proper camera but sometimes if you just work with what you got it really is all about your timing so the rest of you can suck it. All Tomorrow's Parties was a blast last night. Always awesome to see the 1 millionth Chavez reunion. One day maybe one day we'll hear something new out of these men. The word is that ATP is [...]

The Album Leaf is a solo project founded by Jimmy LaValle, whose musical style emulates many of its Sub Pop counterparts. The California-based post-rock band's latest album, 20102s A Chorus Of Storytellers , is a mellow affair that thrives on synth, ambient noise, and occasional acoustic guitar. Each song has a decently long build up and instrumental layering that should intrigue any fan of the post-rock genre; the lyrics, on the other hand, are rarely complicated (lines such as "One day we began/To fly again/And now we start/To fly and then" are pretty much par for the [...]
