Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers are a band I've been meaning to check out for a while but just never got around to it until now. Shilpa Ray's strong, raw, richly-textured voice definitely sets her apart from the throng. Her music reminds me of some of the classic early female rockers, but with a hint of blues and an edge that not many current female artists can boast. Shilpa Ray and Her Happy

Cr: Ebru Yildiz Brooklyn's Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers scored much heady praise for their debut album. On January 18th they return with their sophomore full length, Teenage and Toture. Get a taste of what you can expect with the first single "Venus Shaver". If it's good enough for Nick Cave, it's good enough for me. Shilpa Ray's Myspace

photos by Jessi Bautista Last weekend's Northside Music Festival was a melting pot of musicians converging on various venues in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Of the many great artists who played over the four day festival, I managed to see 6 solid acts who proved they are worthy of their buzz. Sharon Van Etten's wistful, captivating presence struggled at first to silence the semi-rowdy 5 o'clock crowd at Trophy Bar on Saturday. But with a voice like Van Etten's, it was only a matter a minutes before the bar quieted [...]

Last night's show at Pianos was a lot of fun. Three very quality bands, and an enthusiastic, large crowd. I enjoyed Wild Yaks quite a bit. Frontman Zack Davis (is that right?) is definitely an entertainer. His physical appearance is sloppy and endearing- the crooked glasses, the suspenders- and so is his stage manner. When he wails on guitar, he wails. When he tells a story on stage, he genuinely tells that story. The set was erratic and all over the place, just like Davis, but it came off well. And, when the band was rocking out together, [...]

I think this is the first time this has ever happened, but I'm at complete deadlock for Wednesday's recommended show. You'd honestly have a great time at either of these shows, and it's a shame that they're both on the same night. You can catch Wye Oak and Sharon Van Etten at Mercury Lounge. But you can also see Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers and Drink Up Buttercup at Pianos. It's like someone else decided to curate a NYRM event and hold it at two separate venues. I couldn't have picked [...]

Shilpa Ray as an artist is sexless and blunt. Shilpa Ray as a frontwoman is noisy, raucous, grinding, raw—slurring jazzy vocals while playing distorted and overwhelming notes on a harmonium, an instrument she's been playing since she was 6. After first entering the music scene with the now defunct garage-blues Beat the Devil, she's winning over critics and her local New York scene with a syrupy and husky voice that sounds like a punk Ella Fitzgerald. Her music is as vulnerable as a child would be, [...]
