Resting Bell celebrates the 100th release with a small release-series, consisting of 4 parts. Part 1 is a contribution of Shinobu Nemoto, well-known sound-artist from Kanagawa, Japan. He runs his own label "MOUFU-ROKUON", releases his work also as "Summons of Shining Ruins" or "Dark Side of The Audio System" and collaborates with several artists like Brian Grainger, VCV, Jason Adams and Danielle Demos. His new work "Tetsuo" is a glimmering 58-minute opus, divided into 3 parts. Like his "Melting Loop Trip"-project, "Tetsuo" comes with a very warm and meditative feeling. Taking you up and away, let you see [...]
Shinobu - Jeff Rosenstock's "We". So a few years ago Shinobu came to town, playing the tiny little back room at the knitting factory in hollywood, arguably one of the least cool places to play. But that didn't matter to them. They played like they were at the hollywood bowl, leaving it all out there on the stage. They won me over with their scrappy pop rock, similar to Hot Club de Paris. Apparently, in the years in between, the band members have been cast to the wind, sprinkled all over the US. They still manage to record, through the...

Here's a look (and listen) to some records that have been cluttering up our desk and inboxes here at YuppiePunk World HQ. Though none of these titles inspired us to write 3000-word soliloquys, we figured we could at least muster 25 and an MP3. ENEMY YOU - "FADE AWAY" (Nitro) Like their previous two full-lengths, the latest from this San Francisco quartet conjures "No Control"-era Bad Religion with pleasing yet predictable gusto. Enemy You - "Outta Sight" METRIC - "FANTASIES" [...]

Added: Thu, 02 Apr 2009 00:00:00 -0700 Description: Mike and Matt came by during Fest and looked honestly scared while they were playing. The two goons on the left and right were eyeballing them the whole time, threatening to break their kneecaps. I think it had something to do with their gambling debts. They must have spent all their money recording their new record "Strange Spring", which you can get for free at Quote Unquote. Ok, let's try this again to start things off. I featured this band last Friday as our technical difficulties began... but things are back on track now for sure. Below is the original writeup and links. Be sure to check the YouTube There are quite a few more new people here so I just wanted to remind that Fridays, when possible, are reserved for straight up indie rock. Sometimes it's
Shinobu - "T- T- T- Trepanning". If you had drilled a hole in your head, you'd stutter too. Shinobu are all over the place, guitars goin' wildly while the singer yells a song more slurred than sung. But the secret, inevitably, is in the hooks: one at the beginning of each line, in a whine that's totally pop. When the backing vocals come in ("Ahhhhhhhhhhh!"), I've just about resolved to go shoving through this rock'n'roll until I make it to the other side. This is an awesome minute and a half for fans of McLusky and men with megaphones. [buy [...]
Shinobu is one of those rare bands that send me stuff that I actually like. I try to think of myself as a fairly discerning listener, though I readily acknowledge that I'm often full of shit, which often means that I'm listening to albums the first time through with an overtly critical ear. What I mean is that often I'm initially listening from a position of suspicion. I'm like, what crap are you trying to put over on my ears, bitch? This can put unsolicited band submissions at a distinct disadvantage over the music that I'm legitimately excited about. [...]
Shinobu - T-T-T-Trepanning. We all have a perpetual teenager in our heads -- that one part of us that is a sucker for certain things, regardless of their practical nature. This is that part of us that insists on...

Yeah, good question. Well according to the documentary of the same name , it was oil companies, car companies, the government, the California Air Resource Board, the Hydrogen fuel cell, and the consumer. And the details of how each of these individual groups contributed to the demise of the EV1 , a battery-powered electric car produced by GM's Saturn division for a handful of years in the mid-1990s, is outlined in this effective, low key documentary. For a variety of reasons, the car never caught on with consumers (or its manufacturer), and the film is an indictment of [...]
