photo by Brittney Bollay Opening a main stage at a festival can be a daunting task, especially for a band that isn't used to playing festivals. " This is a little different than our basement," noted singer Galen Disston, "but we're really honored to be here." Lucky for Pickwick , a legion of fans rushed to the front of the stage, and with their support, Pickwick tore through a set of groove-based rock that started the day off with a bang. Their energy was high and their musicianship was tight, so by the time they [...]

5 shows in 6 days. So it's not technically a week straight of concerts but anybody that goes to lots of shows consecutively knows it can be draining and exhausting...and all you're doing is listening to music. So that's what I'll be doing. I figured I should highlight some of the music that I'm going to see in Denver this upcoming week. I might also be bragging a little bit about all the bands I get to see. Tonight is Horse Feathers, a great folk band from Portland. Here's their song Belly of June . [...]

First off...a big happy birthday to my Mom. Days off are fun. Here was the playlist for my time away from work this week. It was good. Free mp3: Heartless Bastards - Only For You [...]

It doesn't take too much to get me hooked on indie pop; I like casual melodies and simple hooks. When I got this new track from The Tins , I definitely got that anxious indie pop feeling...somewhere between The Shins and Avi Buffalo . It's perfect tunes to give you that longing feeling as you look out your window onto a bright sunny day. This is from their Life's a Gas album, and it's really got me in the mood to get outside and play. There's [...]

This weekend, it's all about the covers, so if you haven't taken a peek at our Covers For The Weekend playlist, we suggest you do so. For the rest of you, the covers continue through this weekend which, of course, falls into our Weekend Burn ; and who would be better than a few covers from the Shins, whose album Port of Morrow is still ringing in our ears. For the Postal Service, the popularity of their album Give Up will never seem to go away. The Shins rendition of "We Will Become [...]

I decided to give a shout out to my favorite person from New Mexico, my dear friend Nathan Hollis , by promoting the new album from my favorite band from New Mexico. Back in March, The Shins released what is probably my favorite album of the year so far with their 4th full-length album, Port Of Morrow . The Shins have yet to disappoint. Mercer delivers yet another musical and lyrical masterpiece. It's a solid album, through and through, and some the best pop music I've heard all year. My current favorite [...]

This new track popped up on Stereogum yesterday, and I just had to post it. We've heaped praised upon So Many Wizards since back in early 2011, and I'm still supporting, especially as their sound continues to grow. In February I kind of gave them a nod to old school Shins , and they still have that propensity to dig into the pop realm from a very dense arena; these are the sort of things that always make us happy here at ATH. You can find this song as well as [...]

Port of Morrow must have had quite an impact on The Shins , being as it is a simple port in Oregon. In fact, The Shins latest album titled just that, and flew right under our radar in the past months even despite listing it as a feature in our New Releases (posted each Tuesday). Their latest single is titled "It's Only Life", an apparent standby mantra for James Mercer. Ah, so simple to think of it as only life - but a great concept and once again great song-writing skills. The lyrics are [...]

For me, and probably for most longtime Shins fans, there is an abrupt divide that separates their first two albums from everything that has followed since. Oh, Inverted World was an astounding debut album, and Chutes Too Narrow continued in the same vein, with a flair for quirky lyrics and twee/folk-tinged melodies. On their third [...]

Despite the overcast weather and eventual downpour, DC sustainable restaurant Sweetgreen's Sweetlife Food and Music Festival filled the Merriweather Post Pavilion's main stage tent as thousands more looked on from the expansive lawn area Saturday, April 28th. Boasting a diverse and exciting line-up as well as a variety of eco-conscious food options, it's no wonder that the festival was packed-even with the rain forcing many who weren't lucky enough to make it into the tent to don ponchos and open up umbrellas. The night's last three headlining acts [...]

By Michel Dussack Just when it seemed that The Shins were done, James Mercer surprised everyone by announcing the band's heavily anticipated fourth album, 'Port of Morrow'. Despite Mercer being the only original member still in the band, the album was a fantastic effort that received glowingly positive critical reception. On April 30th, the band came to New York's Terminal 5 for the second of three sold out shows at the 3,000 capacity venue. Opening the show was Brooklyn based ...
