Buzz Campbell's first solo outing

Thanks to the Bloggerpocalypse that occurred earlier this week, this nearly finished post was lost forever when Blogger reverted back, jettisoning out over 30 hours worth of posts/comments . The work that was published has mostly been brought back, but, as in my case, drafts were lost or reverted back, losing all updates. Too bad, to, as this was a pretty deep week for releases, one that deserves attention. Between releases from Okkervil River , Man Man , The Antlers , Sloan , Sam Roberts Band , The Felice Brothers , [...]

Before we begin, I have some news about The Indie Sabbath . As you should know by now, the southern part of the United States has been ravaged over the past few weeks by violent thunderstorms, tornadoes and massive flooding. The scale of the disaster is incredible, and the people living in those areas are suffering in a way most of us can't even fathom. Starting Monday the 16th, I am going to be traveling to Missouri to help with the relief effort. This is going to be a physically draining experience as I will [...]

The last thing I expected to hear Saturday night at Backspace here in Portland, Oregon was stirring soul music. Yet that's what Queens' Shivers are dishing out these days. You wouldn't know it from the uptempo synth-driven singles "I Want You Back" and "Used To Be" on the band's latest full-length More , but in front of a live audience, Keith Zarriello transforms into the consummate entertainer and frontman. Dancing and flailing about in manic fashion in a navy blue suit, Zarrielo sunk his teeth into his newest batch of love songs with the urgency, confidence, and [...]

Used To Be Just Didn't Need To Know (from 2009's In The Morning) The Shivers sixth album, More , was released May 10 via Silence Breaks . The veteran duo from Queens, NY, have said that this release would be a bit more eclectic than their low-key folk-focused previous efforts, and the first single off More , 'Used to Be', is exactly that. It's an upbeat, varied song that even includes [...]
This week is one of those weeks in which there are so many good to amazing new releases that we had to split it into two posts. Yesterday's post of Best New Releases highlights: Okkervil River, The Antlers, Wild Beasts, Manchester Orchestra, Man Man, The Cars, Sleepy Viking. Instead of writing anything up about the [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Recorded in Manchester, England More sounds like something made in New York City at the onset of the disco era. A disco album this is not. It’s a storyteller’s record with shades of the era and music made far outside of it. Songs are told in a Tom Waits-like charm or occasionally Mick Jagger from the “Fool to Cry” days. Keith Zarriello talks, croons and sings with a scratchy voice that curls like the undertow just before beach break. It’s clawing at you, at himself, and results in a cool demeanor like a dealer on the [...]

The Shivers ' More begins with "My Mouth Is for My Life", a 47-second melancholy, lounge piano snippet, during which it's hard not to imagine a noir detective unraveling a tragic tale. Maybe, if a piano could talk, it would tell you that making an album is tough and often unrewarding and sometimes doesn’t happen at all. If it did, it would be telling the tale of The Shivers. Scraping together all the cash they could find, New Yorkers Keith Zarriello and Jo Schornikow spent the early part of 2010 in Manchester, England, laying down the [...]

It feels like I've been doing a lot of coming and going lately. I just got back from a week away and it feels like I have been gone for months. On May 10th, The Shivers will return with their latest record More , set for release on Silence Breaks. Recorded in Manchester, UK early last year, the album finds Queens, NY songwriters Keith Zarriello and Jo Schornikow exploring everything from shambly garage rock to melancholic barroom ballads. In honor of the band’s new album, the band has made Used to Be available for free download. The band will also be heading out on a west coast tour starting in early May that will be capped off with a New York homecoming at Mercury Lounge on [...]

I was all over The Shivers' 2009 album In The Morning , partly because it is a conglomeration of raw New York City sounds similar to stuff you'd hear from The Velvet Underground, and partly because the track Cheree is a homonym for my bro's nickname (s/o to Hat). Also, look how fucking cool they are ^. I literally re-stumbled across The Shivers when I likened Natural Child to them in my earlier post, and found out that they have a new album titled More dropping digitally tomorrow, and physically May [...]

Like, this is the time for some great tunes to fill every molecule of air in the world and usher in some great times. The Shivers were first brought to my attention when one of our readers recommended them to me (thanks again Tobi!). After receiving the recommendation and while doing a little Internet research on them, I discovered an MP3 for their moody and sweltering cut "Beauty." It's one of those perfect slices of lo-fi rock and roll [...]

Pure blues, grit, and in the midst of what sounds like a stumbling, intoxicated live performance, two-piece New Yorkers, Keith Zarriello and Jo Schornikow, or The Shivers, tremble through thin songs with aching vocals and shaking, lucid drums. With their new album, “More,” dropping on May 10th, The Shivers have been accumulating a pile of upcoming tour dates around the states and Pitchfork’s calling them “some of the most talented and compelling song-crafters in recent years releases.” That’s not necessarily the case. While their hit single, “Used to Be,” sounds like a fun little [...]
