Then my good friend Sandy over at the fantastic blog, Slowcoustic had to go and post it on his blog, and well, I didn't want visitors to not think I wasn't grateful to be listed, and.... well you know how it all kind of snowballs. So twitter was a little crazy yesterday with this tidbit of information. And well, thanks guys! I'm really quite speechless to be on a list with such folks as this. Honest, I just do my thing here. It's very cool to think that people appreciate it. And even cooler to think that folks [...]

I'm not sure if it's the drizzly weather or the chill in the air that has been around lately, but, I've been thoroughly enjoying Dallas' Shock of Pleasure lately. Their downtempo, trip-hop vibe really gets me. I wrote about them for The Squawker last week , but, I wanted to throw this up on BFD too. It's their cover of The Carpenters "Superstar." Sure, it doesn't have Karen Carpenter's sugary sweet voice, no, that's been replaced by singer Kelley Christian. [...]

Shock of Pleasure We've mentioned the trip-hoppin', Portishead-soundin' locals in Shock of Pleasure a few times on here over the past year or so. And though the band continues to leave us scratching o... Continue reading "Bonus MP3: Shock of Pleasure -- "Not My Angel (Left/Right vs DJ Merritt Remix)"" >

{Shock of Pleasure} Dallas triphop/downtempo masters Shock of Pleasure get the techy-electro rework from up and coming heavy weights Left/Right and veteran DJ/producer DJ Merritt . Silky and sultry vocals stutter, filter, and float over a barrage of clever synth riffs, explosive basslines, and driving beats. The Full EP (including the extended remix) is set to be released soon. We were given the radio edit of one of the remixes to share with you: Shock of Pleasure - Not My Angel (Left/Right vs Dj Merritt Radio Edit) [...]

Best news of the year so far: Merz is back on Mars Needs Guitars after a long absence, with some deeply personal posts and, as always exemplary music to accompany the themes. He knows all the shoegaze that ever was! He has been our inspiration and mentor since the beginning of Speed of Dark and before, and we are privileged to call him friend. Sean at Battery In Your Leg mixes posts about SXSW and vampires and recaps with a helping of remixes. [...]

New shit from Texan's Left/Right ! Ya, it's been awhile since we heard any from these two southern gentlemen. Left/Right and DJ Merritt teamed up to take on triphop/downtempo masters Shock of Pleasure offering a techy-electro rework over some awfully pretty vocals. The version we got sent is only the radio edit, but the Full EP (including the extended remix) is set to drop April of 09 for those who are interested, via Beatport . Shock of Pleasure - Not My Angel (Left/Right vs. DJ Merritt Remix)

Sometimes we find ourselves in a mood that deserves nothing but listening to sultry, honey-voiced electronic-lounge-pop music that reminds us of the days when we were wishing for Portishead to only play "Sour Times" over and over again forever (at varying bpm, natch), when the words Thievery Corporation didn't leave a half-bitter taster in our mouths (cf. so much licensing, so little time). With the Dallas group Shock Of Pleasure 's track "Not My Angel" and, more to the point, singer Kelly Christian's amply sexed-up voice, we get all of that right away. And with this remix [...]

I had always thought Superstar was a Carpenters original until reading an obit on Delaney Bramlett that mentioned the song titled "Groupie (superstar)". The Carpenters version is, of course, the classic. They all but own it...but I love Luther's version the best. The new version by Dallas band Shock of Pleasure certainly rivals Sonic Youth's version for coolness. Either way the song is pure pop perfection. You want to see what's going to be the hit of the music conferences this year? Well here it is! Dallas triphop/downtempo masters Shock of Pleasure get the techy-electro rework from long time dj/producer DJ Merritt & up and coming heavy weights Left/Right . The track has been tearing up the airways and clubs for over a month now. Full EP release (complete with full dj mix and other tracks) are set to be released in April of 2009. Be on the lookout for Chris & Justin (Left/Right) in Austin and New Mexico [...]

Supposedly, Kelly Christian sings, too. A few months back, I wrote about Shock of Pleasure 's super attractive front person Kelly Christian and the band's debut CD It's About Time hitting the streets. Well, it seems those were just the local streets. The band's publicist, one Amanda Tropila, has just informed me that the effort was re-released on a national scale just yesterday. The new issue includes two additional tracks: cools covers of "Superstar" (The Carpenters) and "Spooky" (Dennis Yost). Bonus mp3: [...]

Going back to Dallas to Shock of Pleasure who in a few day (September 17th) will release their log awaited album "Its About Time" and as a reminder they send me one of their smoother than Smooths song: "Space Time" a cool song packed with smooth electronic beats and voice distortions that transports you to a meadow of magic. If you live in the Dallas Ft. Worth area feel free to join them in their release party at the Kinki lounge on 3606 Greenville Avenue, the doors open an 8 pm and the first 20 people get a [...]
Your 33 Black Angels will have a new record out on October 14th called Tales of My Pop-Rock Love Life. David Fricke from Rolling Stone called their last album, 2007's Lonely Street, "one of the year's treasures." The album is a 22-songer, and it's filled with florid, visionary rock and soul about girls, death violence, daises and true love. The band is currently on an eleven-date tour. mp3: New Song Your 33 Black Angels: Website [...]

Say hello to Kelly Christian from the Dallas-based band Shock of Pleasure. The quartet released their debut album It's About Time last year and they describe their sounds as a combination of trip-hop and down-tempo grooves that create an eclectic mix of textures and sound. "This is Electro-Lounge Music - a soundtrack to life in the city." The album was produced by David Castell (Blue October, Burden Brothers, Pallor) and the first single is titled "This Is A Test". I don't have any songs from [...]
Cover songs! My guilty pleasure. I really like this cover of "Superstar" by Dallas group, Shock of Pleasure. The electronic chill out vibe hits the mark. Karen Carpenter would approve. I would listen to this a lot more if I was sad, drunk, or in love. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish one from the other. Shock of Pleasure- Superstar (The Carpenters Cover) (Buy their EP on iTunes ) So how [...]

Let's kick things off this week with the sultry, smoky voice of Melody Gardot . Her debut LP, "Worrisome Heart" is out and what I've heard of it so far is just stunning. Gardot was seriously injured after being hit by a car whilst riding her bicycle in 2004. One of the treatments suggested for her was music therapy and she has truly blossomed. The title track is a guantlet thrown down for aspiring jazz singers. Sublime. MP3: Melody Gardot - "Worrisome Heart" . Word of mouth is still [...]
