Shocking Pinks - I Want U Back Prinzhorn Dance School - Realer, Pretender As you know, we've always striven to keep things interesting over here at MFR and to keep you gentle readers fully informed when it comes to the bands we think you should know and love. Well, it should come as no surprise that we're big fans of DFA Records. LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, The Juan Maclean: the three bands that started out on DFA twelve-inches and have gone way big since. Fact, DFA = success story. Duh. Well, two of the recent DFA signings, the UK's...

Polaroids From the Web Current mood: Tweexcore Stacco per qualche giorno, vi lascio con un po' delle canzoni che mi fanno compagnia in questa stagione. - « I never cared about Henry Rollins / Amelia Fletcher never meant anything to me / [...] I never cared about Ian MacKaye / Calvin Johnson never meant anything to me / [...] Sarah Records never meant anything to me / but the International Tweexcore Underground, will save us all ». (Per chi non cogliesse l'ironia dei Los Campesinos!, specifico che il nuovo [...]

Image: James Rosenquist Great Divide - The Cardigans Closing out the second episode of Mad Men , The Cardigan's "Great Divide" seizes the evanescent unease of what's got to be the best television debut this year. The fleeting, half-psychotic sense that that sweet-voiced little girl will bite you if she gets the chance. That the pink birthday cake is iced with crushed Nembutal. I wasn't [...]

All of the advance warning for Shocking Pinks' first ever New York City show consisted of a last day MySpace bulletin, a late afternoon PR e-mail, and a humble post from the Brooklyn Vegan. Considering that this non existent push was for a band whose pre-existing records are totally unavailable even in the wilds of New York, it would be fair to say that if you weren't deeply in the know, you weren't gonna know. It probably should have been obvious to us that there was no way that this impromptu event was going to be prompt. We sat in [...]

Popular music blog The Guardian yesterday leaked a new track by Bruce Springsteen. In a show of camaraderie to help protect their precious bandwidth, you can download the track titled "Radio Nowhere" below. I've not listened to it yet, so I apologise if it's crap. It's late, I'm tired, and feeling way too lazy to write. I'm back at work after a whole 10 days off, and boy has todays slog proven difficult. There's absolutely no reason for me to post this track, aside from the fact that I've not heard it for ages and it's a quality tune. Dassit really. MP3 Aaliyah - Try Again

Following on from last years amazing coverage of the Reading and Leeds festivals, the BBC pulled out the stops again this year to bring as many live sets to you as possible. It was rather impressive work. At various points of the weekend I found myself pressing the red button, to end up in Carling Weekend lala land where by simply using the blue button, I could trek from tent to tent viewing the bands at my leisure. Prior to sleeping last night I was dancing around the living room to LCD Soundsystem, who finished with "Yeah". I can't remember [...]

I must confess to raising an eyebrow when James Murphy signed Shocking Pinks to DFA - my initial reaction was "who the fuck are they"? My interest was raised further when I noted that the band are kiwis and a offshoot of the Brunettes . DFA has been fairly bereft of cowbell for the last 18 months or so, and on listening to this track, it seems to single handedly restore the quota. MP3 Shocking Pinks - SmokeScreen
hey guys, may i bring to you this massive batch of awesome videos that came out in the past week! so enjoy this big post while i go on a work related assignment through the weekend. rilo kiley - silver lining [ link 2 ] [now this is more like it, the 2nd single off the just released under the blacklight album is pretty darn catchy (possible song of the week?). jenny lewis sounds amazing and looks [...]

DFA Records' continued inching into good old rock and roll is a wonderful thing indeed. Though "good old" isn't the purpose so much as "great new." The labels last two signings, Kiwi throb-and-achers Shocking Pinks and UK smash-and-shouters Prinzhorn Dance School, have been in near constant rotation at the MS-East House Boat for several weeks now. Happily, there seem to be no real stylistic connective threads between the two bands, besides superficially applicable descriptors like "stripped down." No easily coined faux genre names even begin spring to mind. Just good music, sonically diverse and extremely well chosen. Like anyone [...]

I fixed up the candy, look! The Shocking Pinks, "Broken Lens" - Just to make sure we're all caught up on the latest drama, here's a rundown: (1) James derides entire citizenry of New Zealand as toothless sheepfucking Peter Jackson-enabling hillbillies bereft of any sort of cohesive indie-rock scene. (2) Enraged New Zealander becomes engorged with nationalistic fervor, takes James to task in comments section. (3) In a fit of spiteful intoxication, James decides to investigate further, a course of action which eventually leads to a copy [...]
