As much as I want to, I will not be posting any cuts from the new Spiritualized LP, Sweet Heart Sweet Light, which came into my possession yesterday. It was lovingly packaged with posters, flyers and stickers, which I'm trying my best to apply to every available surface in my home. Alas, as the official [...]
Shogun Kunitoki - Mulberg (by FonalRecords ) I still love this album, and rate this as high as the best releases on Fonal. Shot and edited by Sami Sänpäkkilä at Kumu Öö festival, Tallinn Estonia June 4th 2010.
What an eventful weekend. Friday night we celebrated Tom's birthday (and I stayed sober! wow!) out in North Hollywood. Last night I went to a birthday party/murder mystery party that was both stupid and amazing in equal measure (and I didn't stay sober! wow!). Got home shortly before sunrise and managed to make it into [...]
The name "Liberia" denotes liberty. The history of this country is unique among African nations because of its relationship with the United States. It is one of only two countries in Africa, along with Ethiopia, without roots in the European Scramble for Africa. It was founded and colonized by freed American slaves with the help [...]

'Golden Diva' - Flying Lotus (download) 'Parisian Goldfish' - Flying Lotus (download) It's no secret that over the last few years, American rap and hip-hop acts have embraced a minimal and bare-bones aesthetic that strikes the discerning audiophile as lazy and bland. However, while the mainstream sound nets these artists idolation and ire alike, there has [...]

Something a little different to begin the week with. Shogun Kunitoki are a psychedelic instrumental band from Helsinki who like to keep things loud and loose. Their latest album, Vinonaamakasi, is out through Fonal records on all formats - including a limited edition picture vinyl with strobe light kit! Buy MySpace Official

Shogun Kunitoki is a quartet from Finland whose stated mission is to humanize electronic music. Their tools: thick, buttery organs; modulators ringing to high, they're barely audible to human ears; and oscillators doing whatever oscillators do. Shogun's efforts to put a heart in the chest of electronic music have paid off, because Vinonaamakasio is an elite, cyborg killing machine. This LP is the band's Terminator 2 , basically. From start to finish, Vinonaamakasio has the live and fevered feel of jazz fusion. Its linear approach builds each song up until it [...]
Bands with stated missions; we need more of those. The purpose behind Finland's Shogun Kunitoki is to make electronic music less electronic. Yeah. Well, "regress back to a more human state" is the proper wording, but now we're just splitting hairs. All you need to know is they're an organ-driven quartet with a highly psychedelic appeal. Their sound is certainly a tribute to electronics with it's mind-numbing drones, thickened by oscillators and modulators, but don't expect to here a drum machine robotically thumping away. Shogun's latest LP is Vinonaamakasio , and it's out now. [...]

In the last few years we've seen the "psych" tag used ever more and in time it began to denote something ambigious yet distinct in its own way. The blending of free-folk, noise and drone into seamless blocks of musical vista in the works of, say the Not Not Fun label or the Finnish giant Fonal has taken it out of its 1960 's context and built something new atop. Most of the new psychedelic music remains in the rock / folk tradition : long dark and drony moments dressed with earthy folk vibes, yet [...]

Not all of Stereogum's favorite sounds conform to what folks expect us to cover. In this space, resident Bananafish fetishist Brandon Stosuy focuses on bands, albums, singles, and villages in Sweden that may otherwise pass by unnoticed. This installment's virtual milk crate contains Black Water , Shogun Kunitoki , and Vuk . I made the "joke" about villages in Sweden in the above column blurb because I do think it's important to get out of what we perceive as the usual cultural capitals to find music. Of course, Sweden's a bad [...]

Mikä on Shogun Kunitoki ? Yhtyeen oma esittely on osuva: "Shogun Kunitoki is a band from Helsinki, Finland, with a mission to help electronic music regress back to a more human state, the time of the tube organ and the ring modulator, the spring reverb and the test oscillator." Viime kuussa julkaistun toisen albumin, Vinonaamakasion , inhimillinen psykedelia tekee vaikutuksen. Kappeleisiin on löydetty sopiva sekoitus särmää, säröä, pehmeyttä ja rytmiä. Vaikka Shogun Kunitoki onkin instrumentaalibändi, voisi vertailuyhtyeeksi ottaa brittiläisen Broadcastin . [...]

Strobe yourself! I [...]

Very excited to see Finland's Shogun Kunitoki return with another album this year. The band keeps their sound rooted in a vortex of organ fury with no shortage of rhythmic chaos flailing underneath. With the first track the band eases you into their world before exploding sound into vivid color and flashing lights. Buzzing like some hive mind come to envelop your soul for good, the band are the perfect mix of Krautrock and demented circus. I'd say this was up for the best Finnish release of the year but then again I don't underestimate Fonal and I see that [...]
Portlandilainen postrock-kokoonpano Grails nousee Tavastian lavalle tiistaina huhtikuun 28. päivä. Grailsia lämmittelee maaliskuun alussa toisen albuminsa Vinonaamakasio Fonal-levymerkillä julkaiseva Shogun Kunitoki . Godspeed You! Black Emperorin postrockiin, Dirty Threen elokuvalliseen aavikkotunnelmointiin sekä varhaisen Pink Floydin psykedeliaan verrattu instrumentaalimusiikkiyhtye Grails perustettiin 90-luvun lopulla kitaristien Alex Hallin ja Paul Spitzin sekä rumpali Emil Amoksen toimesta. Ensimmäiset vuodet nelikko tunnettiin vielä nimellä Laurel Canyon, mutta vuoden 2003 debyyttialbuminsa The Burden of Hope yhteydessä kokoonpano vaihtoi nimensä Grailsiksi. Soundissaan niin postrockia ja doom metallia kuin etnisiä musiikkivaikutteita ja psykedeelistä rockia sekoitteleva Grails kuuluu [...]
