Sholi - Tourniquet It's worth saying that I found it through Touch and Go's website, and was thus initially concerned that I wasn't hearing angry-white-dude-t-shirt punk rock. "Tourniquet" starts out imitating the aforementioned angry white dudes, with a jumpy circular bass riff that should be very familiar in both tone and construction to fans of Drive Like Jehu or (T&G mainstays) Shellac or the Jesus Lizard - but whereas those bands specialized in building those tense, sparse basslines into righteous post-punk fury hurricanes ("furycanes," which is different from "furricanes," which are furry Puerto Ricans), this song [...]

It's time to look back and reflect again. What were we listening to one year ago? Listen to the February 2009 Mix to find out... Obviously the title's more than a bit facetious, but we did want to do something a little special to celebrate the 200th episode of our weekly Bay Bridged podcast . For this week's show, we each picked four artists featured on past podcasts (one for each year of the show) and discussed some memorable behind-the-scenes highlights, including tales of excessive drinking, awkward conversation, and equipment failures. On a serious note, we'd like to thank all of the listeners who've made doing the show so rewarding. Thank you also for indulging us in this silly look back [...]

So what happened in 2009? The economy went south, MdM posting was slacking, and the world turns gospel and hymn. I guess we have our Simon & Garfunkel moment. Animal Collective - My Girls Merriweather Post Pavilion ( Domino ) If you want to know why Animal collective is popular, then look no further than early american hymn. This is why so many people like them despite the strange blurry recording, while to others the sound simply doesn't compute. The danceable rhythm section is just added side attraction. If [...]
Music video for "All That We Can See" by San Francisco's Sholi from the band's eponymous LP.
Sholi - All That We Can See from Zeek Earl on Vimeo . Sholi remains one of 2009's best albums, even if Sholi has been quiet for some time. The band just sent over a video for "All That We Can See," a song that remains as potent as when I first heard it several years ago. It feels a little cyclical to once again discover the song in a new form, and there's something in the mix of new and familiar that [...]

The Bay Area may not have a single unified scene, but its diverse musical communities produced a ton of acclaimed records in 2009. The following list collects thirty-two of the highlights that made this another banner year for Bay Area indie music. It's a collection that showcases the depth of Bay Area indie in 2009, and one suspects that few other regions have offered this volume of quality releases this year. A couple of qualifiers: This isn't a comprehensive list of excellent local records from 2009 or intended as any sort of official Bay Bridged [...]

In preparing some end-of-the-year features that will run over the next week, we were once again struck by how many Bay Area bands made a significant impact on indie music this year. If you like what you hear, check out our podcast episodes spotlighting each of these bands. This will be our last podcast of the year, but we'll be continuing [...]

Last year , EAR FARM featured 43 bands in our Band of the Week feature... ranging from relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ) to interviews with indie-rock legends (see The Wedding Present and Silver Jews ) to everything else in between. In 2009 we set out to one-up ourselves, and as it turns out we've done just that. This year EAR FARM featured 45 bands as Band of the Week, again flexing our genre chops across the entire spectrum of what we consider to be the best music being [...]

Tomorrow night at the Cake Shop (NY), FMLY's Philip Seymour Hoffman is opening for Sholi and The Answering Machine . Show starts at 8, PSH goes on right at 8:30. Word on the street is that he's playing through a new set for the first time, bringing the jams. Here's a tune that just went up on the myspace and PSH requested that if anyone out there is pals with Natalie Portman to please sing this to her in a Mexican restaurant with a rose in your ear and a boomboox (not from urban [...]

HANK ALTOGETHER: Sholi's self-titled debut is the kind of thing that can save post-rock. It's a brainy mesh of memory and music. However, I don't know if it's as good as this whispered underplaying of Newsom's overarching ethereal song.

There is a ton of new music out there. And quite frankly, I am having a hard time keeping up. As I mentioned before, I get a bunch of emails everyday, regarding new music that is out or coming out. What I think I will do from now on, is do more frequent posts during the day (instead of just one). And that way I can get some of this new music out to you on a timely basis. So, check in here often because I will be putting up multiple posts a day. I definitely have the [...]

MARCH: A summary words: Jamie Milton A lot can happen in a month. Flipping back the pages and pages of March's releases, I kept adding album after album, impressive enough to warrant inclusion in the monthly summary, most of which we reviewed, showing how hard I and the whole host of new writers have been working over the last few weeks. MFM found a new home, avoiding the wrath of DMCA takedowns and threats, avoiding the disappointment of a deletion of paragraphs of thought-out praise or criticism to note-worthy [...]

The beauty of SXSW is that at any given hour, there are so many contrasting options and events sprawled across the greater Austin metropolitan area that there's always something for everyone. Friday and Saturday certainly proved this, offering a perfect balance of stadium-sized swagger (Metallica and Echo and the Bunnymen at Stubb's), laid-back lounging under the sun (everything at the French Legation Museum), and nearly everything else in between. Don't believe us? Check out the following photo recap from Days 3 and 4 of SXSW 2009 and see for yourself, and make sure to stay tuned for our full SXSW [...]
