Tropical PITA Fay is just sitting offshore with no direction in mind and has dumped tons of grief on the Space Coast. Some parts of Melbourne have 26" inches of rain to deal with, and the Cape has had 21". Here at home we are expecting about 12", so while we wait for whatever comes to actually come we figure why not share some music some nice folks have sent us. ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ Feel Good Drag is the first single of the kickass band Anberlin's new album New Surrender. The band will [...]

The Shondes (Their new album, The Red Sea , was one of my top albums of January 2008 . They played at The Rud back in December and now they are back for more.) The Shondes are known for their complex, melodic rock sound combined with rich vocals, and a live show that explodes with energy. Their songwriting fuses the various musical traditions of feminist punk, classical, Jewish, and queercore, while their vocal melodies move effortlessly from anthemic to haunting, textured by the distinct qualities of each of their voices. The result is [...]
SCARLETT JOHANSSON RELEASES EP, COVERS CURE Scarlett Johansson , much storied already in these pages (postings?) for her recent album of Tom Waits covers entitled Anywhere I Lay My Head , has just released a new live EP covering songs from said record as well as "Boys Don't Cry", the Cure classic. Given the live setting, one might think the songs wouldn't translate as well without the David Sitek production touch. However, these tracks remain whoozy and beautiful with Johansson's deep and whispy vocals providing [...]

This mix has a story behind it. A while back, I was reading a post by Marcy from Lost In You Inbox about Cassettes Won't Listen supposedly contributing to the soundtrack to the newest Indiana Jones movie. Upon further inspection, I saw that it was just a YouTube video of the movie trailer with a Cassette Won't Listen song playing. I informed Marcy of this and could feel her disappointment in there not being a Indie rock filled soundtrack. So, in order to apologize for dashing Marcy's hopes, I made an Indiana Jones soundtrack [...]
As the musical world descends on Austin, we sit in our crowded office to begin the process of delivering music to those of you not headed for the Texan oasis. Who needs to be among all that live music, all that BBQ, and all that free booze? Yeah, we wish we were there too. At least EVP has some music to share to help us all get over our heartache. O! the Joy (from Zen Mode ) "The Fault Is Not Mine" [...]
The Shondes are a quartet whose dramatic rock music has been likened to Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith, and Rasputina. I can't agree wholeheartedly with such loftly comparisons, but there is a definite... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**

Good stuff! Wish I could say more. The Shondes The Red Sea is the self-released debut album of Brooklyn's The Shondes . Their press blurb says: "Their songwriting fuses the various musical traditions of feminist punk, classical, Jewish, and queercore..." I don't know what queercore is, but I can tell you that Elijah Oberman totally shreds soundwaves with his violin on "Let's Go," and co-vocalist Louisa Solomon has a voice that [...]

Like many other music blogs, we get a lot of emails from bands asking us to check them out. While, we do our best to keep up, there just isn't enough time in the day to write a piece about everyone. So instead of ignoring these often times great new bands, we figured it would [...]

The Shondes released their debut album, The Red Sea , earlier this month, and it has easily become one of my favorite discs of the young year. Their classically-trained musicianship and socially inspired, politically active lyrics are the perfect combination to this music blogger's ears. CMJ wrote of The Red Sea : "Louisa Rachel Solomon's vocals are strong, nimble and graceful on the band's self-released debut, which sees both complex song structures intertwined with direct, inquisitive lyrics. The result is an album rich in saw-tooth guitars, pummeling [...]

Since I am heading down DC way this weekend to see the Bellman Barker/Jukebox the Ghost CD release show, I'll let you in on what going on around the City of Brotherly Love. Friday night, a huge local show is at The Northstar featuring the not-so-psychedlic psychedelic rock of The Cobbs and one of my picks for the best of Philly 2007, Papertrigger . They are joined by Jotto and The Greyhounds . This is one of the best line-ups [...]
