A ny music blogger knows how tough it is to pick new music from your inbox. It fills up so quick, it makes your head spin. Even if you try to squeeze in some unknown acts into the game, you always feel guilty that you couldn't put everyone in. So, here's to hoping that these Open-Mic Mondays will help spread word on the massive amount of undiscovered talent out there. If you want your music to be displayed here, just email me . First up is the [...]
I met Leo Maymind during CMJ last October. He was a nice guy, very personable, and very much into the music world. As is the way with the CMJ Music Marathon, Leo had a CD he wanted me to take a listen to and I promised him I would. I didn't think it would take me this long to get to it, but such is the problem when you have a bag filled with a few hundred CD's that you sort of forget to look at.

Finally! The very first Daily Graboid of 2008! The releases this week are a bit slim, but this month as a whole is set to start the year off with a flurry of great albums. I can definitely recommend picking up the Juno soundtrack, as it contains a lot of decent acoustic tracks from the likes of Kimya Dawson , Belle & Sebastian and Cat Power . I'm still not sure if I love the actual movie, but the soundtrack works well enough on it's own. [...]
It's time to start spending those holiday gift cards at your local record store or favorite online digital retailer. The new releases are starting to spill in, though a bit slowly right now. Largehearted Boy 's list of new releases is still a bit thin, though beefier than it's been since the holidays. Looking for the new Lily Allen? That's what some critics and fans have been saying about Kate Nash , the latest brash, young, female, internet buzzed about, heavily accented British [...]

It's been a while since I tossed a handful of mp3s in your direction and asked for an opinion, but the stack of CDs on my counter isn't getting any smaller, so it's time to start cleaning house once again. If you like any of the songs I've shared below, please take the time and share your opinion. These artists were cool enough to share their blood, sweat, and tears with us...the least that could be done is if you like what you hear, let them know. [...]

After some e-mail trouble, I've finally started to get through all the messages I've missed the last couple of weeks. Needless to say, I had quite a bit of music waiting for me, and I have now weeded out the ones I find worthy of posting. Enjoy! MP3: Black Lips - "Not A Problem" MP3: The Shondes - "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" [...]

English Version: If you recommend me a band that plays with violins, there's a chance of 98.69% that I will like it. For that reason, The Shondes , a NY quartet took my attention. With their debut album "The Read Sea" on January 08, they come with a dramatical performance mixing a punk-rock attitude with "gypsy" influences. Let me be repetitive because I like the opinion that The Shondes will fill the void Sleater-Kinney left after the break-up. Just listen Let's Go , for that song [...]

[mp3] Will You Still Love Tomorrow? (The Red Sea, 2008) + info: The Shondes
"Ready for an indie break out....radical politics, inspired riffs, textured harmonies and pure sex appeal" – Curve Magazine "Seamlessly fusing art and politics" – Punk Planet "Hard-driving, politically savvy rock 'n roll" – Flavorpill "A powerful new sound" – Heeb Magazine The Shondes , a Brooklyn, NY quartet taking its name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace" has launched a winter tour to preface the release of its debut album, The Red Sea produced [...]

Meet " The Shondes " and why am I introducing you to them? Because Elijah Oberman plays the violin like a beast! From Brooklyn, New York we have Ian Brannigan no guitar, Elijah Oberman on violin, Louisa Solomon on the bass and Temim Fruchter on the drums. I didn't leave out the vocals, they ALL sing. Their MySpace page says their music ranges "from Classical to Jewish to Queercore and Feminist Punk." Quite the mixture and who knew the blend could sound so sweet? It's energetic, it's funky, it's exciting and new. I'm looking forward [...]

view original photo This morning on the train it dawned on me that I might talk about The Shondes more if I had more than just three songs from their demo to listen to. I posted about them a while back , but don't let that make you think I haven't been keeping an eye on them. Their tour schedule has been full (and continues to be!) but luckily when I offered it, they had room on their crowded calendar to play a show tonight. Reminiscent of recently-disbanded [...]

Brooklyn-based politi-rockers The Shondes are at Tritone this weekend for the monthly girl power show Sugartown . We listened to The Shondes a couple of months ago and 2 things came to mind: 1. Damn they sound like Sleater Kinney. 2. They are super in your face. 3. I know I said only 2, but the songs are well worth a listen. Note to self: when I start a band, make sure it's as musically shallow as possible. All the hooks should be immediate and duh-obvious, all the lyrics should vacillate between silly and stupid, and all the songs should be bouncy, pointless trifles. As I learned from a certain band that preceded the Shondes (and which I'll leave unnamed), that's pretty much a guaranteed formula for success. All around me on that blustery Williamsburg night, there were twenty-year-old girls fawning, shouting back chorus lines on cue and bobbing their heads like pecking birds. Meanwhile, I was just waiting for [...]

When Sleater-Kinney called it quits last year there was a noticeable collective unease over who, if anyone, might fill the void left by their departure. At least, in my own circle (okay, in my circle of one, but I'm going to miss Sleater-Kinney) there's been a bit of a mourning period followed by the wondering. What band might be able to pick up the riot grrrl baton and push forward into the ears and minds of progressive listeners? What now for those of us who like our music to feel and think and fight just like we [...]
Interesting promotion for a book - Submit your own mixtape tracklist for a chance to win an iPod , thanks to Rob Sheffield's Love is a Mix Tape . DJ Mojo has a new weekly show on Breakthru Radio called Maximimum Music . If you need to learn what's up in local music, that's that spot (plus some old goodies and treats from out of town, just like the shows he books). Get ready to load 'em up, kids. Not only did [...]

I have trouble reading the newspaper everyday. Each morning is yet another document of worldwide degradations and wide-scale horrors. Rather than finish my coffee and head into the city, I'll want to storm the streets, bombard my Congressmen with letters, organize mass protests until the worst of the problems are solved. But I won't. I'll just drink up the brown-black dregs, board the subway and try to stow away all that anger and outrage in some leftover compartment. I'll spend more energy inventing excuses than affecting change. That's why I'm so glad there's a [...]
Eleni Mandell - Girls Annuals - Brother The Rapture - Whoo! Alright, Yeah...Uh Huh Kraak - I Was Not There The Shondes - Let's Go Panthers - Uncertainly

The Shondes take their name from the Yiddish word for 'disgrace' - presumable because being a band composed of radicals, queers, trannies, Jewish and non-Jewish Palestine-solidarity activists, they get to hear it a lot. Thankfully their music is as interesting as their sound. They rock like radicals first of all, but they have a thing for strings, accordions and folkish melodies. They really are very worth hearing - 'Let's Go' especially, being the weird little biblical musical adventure it is. Except in this Bible there are anti-Zionists, and transgender characters. Wow! Let's Go [...]
