More Redd Kross Rarities

Redd Kross - Shonen Knife (audio only)
Hey kave kids, here's some more cooler than thou stuff from Redd Kross! Here's a quick Redd Kross story. Back in the 80's around the "Teen Babes From Monsanto" era- RK played a NYC show with the Circle Jerks, Toxic Reasons and DOA. I still have the poster from the show. So me and Davey snuck backstage (it was at this old theater/club called The Ritz- now known as Webster Hall). We were pretty "enhanced" and struck up a convo with the bros McDonald that focused mainly on mushrooms, stealing liquor from our parents stash and of course [...]

Beavis & Butthead: Tastemakers

Beavis & Butthead: Tastemakers With Beavis and Butthead back on the air after nearly a decade-and-a-half hiatus, I thought I'd take a moment to offer my belated thanks to these two badly-drawn boys for turning me on to a couple of bands that otherwise would have escaped my attention. Even before MTV got out of the music video business, Beavis and Butthead were airing videos that would never have gotten any airplay via mainstream channels. Presumably channeling Mike Judge's musical tastes, Beavis and Butthead provided US viewers with the first glimpses of several well-below-the-radar bands including the Dead Milkmen, the Cramps, Daisy [...]

Merry Merry Christmas!

Merry Merry Christmas! This is a pre-recorded post, so please don't get in touch as I'm not here. So it's Christmas day, and I'm guessing that by now you're sick to your back teeth with The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, The Waitresses and Jona Lewie, so here's one of my favourite 'alternative' Christmas songs, kudos to Billy2Tails for introducing me to this great track. Merry Christmas and a music-filled New Year to all of our listeners! Space Christmas by Shonen Knife

A Very Festive Post!

A Very Festive Post! Can you believe 2012 is just around the corner? Last minute gift shoppers need not be reminded. If you still have the time for some jolly new music to add to your playlist today, check out this poorly timed roundup of this year's holiday highlights. ❄ She & Him 's holiday LP "A Very Merry She & Him Christmas" is pretty much the essential release this season. Zooey Deschanel & M. Ward's seasonal offering is a charming collection of lovely old-timey fireside tunes. MP3: [...]

That Sound #106 - Christmas Part 2: Toad the Wet Sprocket, A Weather, Dressy Bessy, Dandy Warhols, Shonen Knife, more! It was past my bedtime when I did this, so, you know, just bear that in mind if I slurred a couple words. The music is GREAT though. If you didn't hear it yet, and you can't get enough seasonal tunes, be sure to hear part 1 of this year's Christmas special , or if you're hard-core, every Christmas special I've ever done . New releases for the week of November 29, 2011

New releases for the week of November 29, 2011 Things will be calming down over the next couple of weeks with our schedule now well into the holiday shopping season. However, there will probably be plenty of great new releases pushed in before Christmas time. We're surprised that they didn't squeak the singles collection from Gorillaz (pictured) out last week, but it will be in stores tomorrow. Shonen Knife has a Christmas album (any later and that one would definitely be too late). Kylie Minogue puts out a DVD. And don't forget the highly anticipated sophomore album from Hot Chelle Rae . Ready, Steady, Still Going: A chat with Naoko Yamano on 30 Years of Shonen Knife

Ready, Steady, Still Going: A chat with Naoko Yamano on 30 Years of Shonen Knife In Osaka in 1981, Naoko Yamano decided she'd had enough of life in the Japanese corporate culture and with her sister Atsuko and friend Michie Nakatani, formed a band called Shonen Knife . What began as simple escapism influenced by Western punk and hard rock bands eventually won the trio countless fans in Japan and beyond. Now undisputed as the country's premier "ultra eccentric super cult punk pop band," Shonen Knife have chosen to celebrate their 30th anniversary by releasing an album which itself celebrates one of the band's foremost inspirations: the electrifying music of the Ramones. [...]

Coming to Pittsburgh: Shonen Knife w/ Heavy Cream @ 31st Street Pub Thursday 11/17/11

Coming to Pittsburgh: Shonen Knife w/ Heavy Cream @ 31st Street Pub Thursday 11/17/11 Coming to Pittsburgh: Shonen Knife w/ Heavy Cream @ 31st Street Pub Thursday 11/17/11 Shonen Knife is an all-female Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka, Japan, in 1981. The band is currently on their 30th Anniversary tour. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock acts, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs expressing infectious melodies and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English. Despite their pop-oriented nature, the trio maintains a distinctly underground garage rock sound rooted in edgy instrumentation and [...]

Shonen Knife play Mayday this week

Shonen Knife play Mayday this week Ready to feel old? Shonen Knife are celebrating their thirtieth anniversary as a band this year. Boom. Do you see what just happened? A band that your dad would shake his head at with bewilderment and call "weirdo young kid punk" if he heard one chorus of it is thirty. It's right up there with Nevermind celebrating its twentieth on the list of things that make you want to curl up with a Gameboy and a VHS copy of Jurassic Park and accept that the world has passed you by. Or maybe you should [...]

Rjómalagið 11. nóvember : Shonen Knife – Perfect Freedom

Shonen Knife - Perfect Freedom

Tonight in L.A.: Shone Knife, Deer Tick/Guards, Mastodon, Minus the Bear, Uh Huh Her, Skylar Grey [Happy November. And happy birthday to Eulogies' Peter Walker ...] Tuesday's touts: ► Shonen Knife have been fun for a long time, and on many continents. The Japanese pop-punk standouts are celebrating their 30th anniversary as a band, and they visit the Echoplex on the heels of their latest release "Osaka Ramones," a tribute to the band in whose shadow they've rocked for three decades. Shonen Knife – Osaka Ramones: A Tribute to the Ramones

Our often deep-seated cynicism about cover albums isn't without justification. Routinely deployed by creatively exhausted bands to fulfil contractual obligations in the absence of new material, tribute records can be a dispiriting prospect. Then of course there's the prospect of Japan's premier punk outfit raiding the back catalogue of the Ramones... In stark contrast to so many tribute albums, this project makes a great deal of creative sense and offers endless tantalizing possibilities. New York's punk pioneers have had so large an influence on Osaka's Shonen Knife that the Japanese all-girl trio have occasionally performed [...]
