I recently heard that Parts & Labor are going on an "extended hiatus". Here is their statement regarding the hiatus... Dear friends, This January, Parts & Labor turns 10 years old. We're planning a string of celebratory shows, in which we play selected material from all of our full length albums, leading up to a big 10th anniversary blow out on February 24th, 2012. Following these performances, we're going to take an extended hiatus. We feel incredibly fortunate having had a decade of amazing experiences — making records and new [...]

Recommended Show: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2011 SHOOTING SPIRES @ BRUAR FALLS 245 Grand St Brooklyn, NY 11211 $7, 8PM One half of the noise-making core of Parts and Labor (and one-third of the entire band), BJ Warshaw, performs with his solo project Shooting Spires tonight. It's a bit more bedroom pop and a little less aggressive than his more famous band, but definitely worth a trip to Brooklyn! The Oakland pair simply known as WOOM is so enchanting in their pop quirky-ness I feel like hugging them when I listen to Muu's Way . Their songs remind me of a friend of mine who's obssessed with Iceland and sweaters. I don't know why. All it is is Sara on synthesized sounds and main vocals and Eben on guitars. Sounds like a simple set-up but their tracks can range from the ridiculously minimal folk pop to extensively layered sound scapes that fill up your room, your head and the universe. [Video: WOOM - The [...]

Sara Magenheimer and Eben Portnoy are WOOM . The duo is following up their debut album, Muu's Way with a free remix EP on Ba Da Bing Records . The Muu's Way Remixed EP will be available for download next Tuesday via eMusic . We are super excited to have the first track from said EP to hit the internets. Here is BJ Warshaw (of Parts & Labor fame) remixing under his solo proj moniker Shooting Spires . This quite literally destroys. Listen. Downloadable: The Hunt (Shooting [...]

Shooting Spires (the solo project of BJ Warshaw from Parts & Labor ) made a trip to Austria. During the trip, he decided to visit his grandmother's birth place, a little apartment complex in Vienna. They Shoot Music filmed the visit as well as BJ playing "A Million Drops" and "At Last At Least." The songs are stripped down to as little instrumentation as possible and this is possibly the first time ever you get to really hear BJ's voice without the wall of sound that usually accompanies it. Amazing and intimate. The videos below are [...]
Words by Derek Evers Photos by Nate Dorr It would be presumptuous of me – or anyone for that matter – to assume that Parts & Labor founding members B.J. Warsaw and Dan Friel could have envisioned the twists and turns that have accompanied the band and its line-up over its five-plus years of existence. As things have progressed, members, and subsequently sounds, have changed, leaving B.J. and Dan as the only parts of Parts & Labor that have endured. The labor is one of love, and one that has seen Warsaw and Friel [...]

It's a Saturday night, I should really be out doing something far more interesting... but nevermind that. Whilst hibernating in my rubiks cube sized box room, I just came across this gem of act - Shooting Spires . It's the "bedroom art-pop" project of Parts & Labor bassist/vocalist BJ Warshaw , and while I'm not particularly enamoured with his main project, I can't help but fall in love with his debut and self-titled album under this guise. Released in late 2007, Shooting Spires is a great experimental album [...]

(photos from lovely New Orleans, including the Termite & Vine squat and performance by the Little Lambs) Things have been quiet around here, and for good reason kind of. New Orleans was an interesting trip, with veritable ups and downs. But after spending an evening in Orleans Parish Prison I had to admit defeat (more on that later, maybe). Some great kids in NOLA, and it is truly one of the most beautiful and unique places in America. However it kicked my ass so I got the hell out. Headed to Richmond next for Slaughterama [...]
Hi, Ted Small here filling in for blogmeister pplist. pp is going through a spell of extraordinary shyness and hopes to reemerge soon. You don't need us to tell you that if you want to see R.E.M. tonight you should have started lining up at Stubb's two days ago. Also you know how big these SXSW crowds are getting every year. The best bet for the sake of your legs -- and for the sake of not standing in line all night -- is to pick your showcase wisely. Besides, there are too many stacked bills to even worry about hopping around all night. Rather than sprain your fingers scrolling through tonight's master list , we've made you a list of eight [...]
