Formerly running with the moniker, Old Husband, the Adelaide, Australia-based due Manor (Nathaniel Morse & Caitlin Duff) hit us like a brick with their track "Rhodesia". Harmonization like that of the Beach Boys intertwines with a California beach-like vibes like that of The Shore . Duff's vocals will make you melt, Morse's song-writing talent will tear your world apart. This is perhaps one of the best tracks we've heard all year. Manor - Rhodesia For more Songs of the Week from previous weeks, [...]

Fare for your fantastic Friday: ► Lucinda Williams returns for a show at UCLA's Royce Hall behind her acclaimed release "Blessed." Blake Mills opens. ► Cambodian psych-rockers Dengue Fever join Secret Chiefs 3 for a concert at the El Rey Theatre. ► It's one more local show for Wilco , this one at the Los Angeles Theatre ► Vicky Cryer , the latest project from Louis XIV's Jason Hill [ see our post from last July ], headlines the Troubadour, with LP supporting. ► And a [...]

For a band so enthused, intrigued, and engrossed by mixed media collage it'd seem entirely appropriate that Islet's debut full-length and our first real glimpse into the Cardiff outfit's well-oiled inner workings, Illuminated People, should represent yet another mixed media collage, albeit in audio aesthetic. And in truth, this particular composition is as unmissable as any furore-inducing Hockney veneration. Portentous ebbs of abrasion are offset by the calming coos of Emma Daman on audaciously expansive opener Libra Man, providing an initiation that gives away little to nothing as to [...]
Another Stellar, Sunny Summer No matter where we go, the solitude and serenity of the lake house is always a constant for us. This summer was no different as we spend wonderful chunks of time along the waters. There was...
Tweet Listen to "Make It Sound" , the new album by The Sea Of Cortez below. A little over a year ago this young band appeared on my radar who impressed me enough to write an Introduction piece about them. The five piece from LA at that time only had a couple of songs to their name but now, more than a year later, they're done with their debut full-length. Back then [...]
Plenty of Friday fun: ► Feedback-loving Bay Area post-punk trio Weekend hits the Echo behind their new "Red" EP on Slumberland Records, with Talk Normal and Tan Dollar supporting. ► Nashville quartet the Features , sharp and spirited when they visited L.A. in July, make a return visit to the Satellite. ► Bright Eyes plays a sold-out show at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. ► London dance royalty Monarchy visit the Echoplex, with two local bands, Hot As Sun and the Holloys, supporting. That's the video for [...]

Once in a blue moon an artist or band will craft a sound – a sonic experience – that immediately falls effortlessly into an impeccable existence in terms of both form and function. One such example of this increasingly rare phenomenon is Atlantic , the debut EP release from Canadian duo Southern Shores. Emanating from the frigid coastline of Halifax, Nova Scotia, this impressive first compilation of disco-infused pop tunes sounds more like it belongs under the sun on some trendy summer beach along southern Europe. Though every track is well placed and perfectly composed – not [...]

Wiretree is ready to release its third LP, Make Up , on September 6th. The Austin, Texas band was originally a solo recording project of singer-songwriter Kevin Peroni. Peroni added Joshua Kaplan, Rachel Peroni and Daniel Blanchard to record the second album, Luck , in 2009. A departure from their previous efforts, Make Up was recorded in the studio with very few overdubs with the goal of capturing natural raw performances. The music is powerful and vibrant, but still intact are the strong songwriting and melodies the band is known for. Listen to their new [...]

Not much information on this one, but I'm pretty stoked by the combination of 8bit sound snippets, the metallic drum machine pattern and those dark and eerie synth pads placed underneath the whole thing, creating some kind of deranged hip hop with a gloomy atmosphere that is pitch-perfect for that awfully rainy weekend which lies ahead of us. Shore appears to be the project of some Malcolm Peterson from Columbia, whichever Columbia that might be in fact. Demo is available for free via bandcamp and features a couple more tunes you definitely should check [...]

Shore It is my belief that if you replace that carpet with a chaise lounge then this room will make much more sense. Shore - Lover ( mp3 )
Yet another band from the musical mecca that Austin, Texas has become. Wiretree is a foursome led by frontman Kevin Peroni, and they make solid indie guitar rock reminiscent of The La's, The Sins or The Thermals. If that's not enough "The's" for ya, here's another: the first single from Wiretree's forthcoming nine-track LP Makeup, [...]

This week saw the release of the debut LP from Berlin-based electronic wonder Norman Palm . Released by City Slang ( Arcade Fire, Caribou, Broken Social Scene ) Shore to Shore has already staked a claim as one of the all-out pop records of the year, encompassing everything from electro-pop to Krautrock. His first release - a self-released 200-page artbook and accompanying soundtrack - has seen him gain a reputation as one of the most creative artists around at the moment. With an album that spans so many genres and a [...]

You may not know this, but the name of Chapel Club 's debut album was in fact the second name they went by before eventually settling on the one through which they have become known. There's more: these eleven (well, ten and a short introduction) songs have all been making their rounds on the live circuit for quite a while; and, with their 'Wintering' EP, they actually released four songs of brand new material before a date for the album had even been set. Confused? So am I. Naming a record after an old band name whilst [...]

>> We saw The Hush Now 's final show of the year Wednesday night and the quintet continues to be among the most formidable of Boston bands. We've been holding onto the fivesome's latest holiday jam "On Holiday" because, well, we're trying to hold the line against holiday creep. But now that Thanksgiving is over and done, it is time to confront the sounds of the season. The Hush Now 's aforementioned, bossa nova romp approaches irresistible, and we've had the one-song CD-R on repeat in the car for days. "On Holiday" is an uptempo confection [...]
