... and the world rejoices. Exaggeration? Yes, but honestly, if we were allowed to pick two bands to play the last show we'd ever attend, Shotgun Jimmie and Apollo Ghosts would be in the running. It's so refreshing to find a talented band blessed with humility and that actually gives a shit about playing and giving back to their fans, and if you've seen either of these acts on stage you know they put in the work to make sure you walk away feeling like they not only earned [...]

I know, I know. Lists are annoying and trying to assign rankings and value to art is subjective at best. That's why these records - 25 from releases that really made an impact on me in '11 - aren't branded with any type of distinction other than "favorite." These are records, not songs, that warmed my heart, eased my pain, inspired my creativity or simply helped tap my toe or nod my head. They never asked for anything more than a listen, and I was more than happy to oblige. That being said, there [...]

Here is part three of the Best of 2011 Canadian albums. We are almost getting halfway through the list. Here is the ranking from #30-21. 30. Shotgun Jimmie - Transistor Sister Listen to Late Last Year and Transistor Sister . 29. Coeur de Pirate - Blonde Listen to Adieu and Cap Diamant . 28. Ferriswheel [...]
So we're a couple days into HPX 2011 , and because we haven't been out yet, we'll quote our favorite uber-drunk Gus' patron "What's up with the music guys, IS IT AWESOME?" That's more of a rhetorical question really, we know most of the shows have probably been awesome. Not awesome: the rain. As per usual, the Ack and I are contemplating hitting a show or two tonight, and boom, we have a monsoon season in Halifax now. Sorry everyone. Let us make it up to you with a bunch of songs from some of the folks [...]

by teepoo Here's a cute song by Shotgun Jimmie about falling in love with the friend you walk home with in grade 9. It's part of his new album Transistor Sister which was longlisted for this year's Polaris Prize. Shotgun Jimmie- Suzy The video is pretty weird and not what you'd expect:

Yea! It's Friday. Wanna start the weekend with a perfect 2 minute pop song? Then you are in the right place. Shotgun Jimmie just released the video below for his song "Suzy". It's an awesome video shot in Toronto on the hottest day of the year. Watch and then download. Play a few times in the office to get ready for the weekend. Doing these Video Hits posts can be knid of strange, some weeks I can hardly scramble together 3 decent videos, and others we find ourselves overrun with quality clips to put up. Well our clip cup runneth over this week, as there's been plenty of solid Canadian videos released in the last week or so, but we're going to keep it to just three vids in this post. Perhaps we'll sneek in a bonus Vid Hits post some point soon. If you've been into Canadian music at all over the last [...]
East coast indie favorite Shotgun Jimmie has just released a new music video. "Suzy" comes from his Polaris Prize long-listed album Transistor Sister. Watch the video here:

This might have been the worst album I listened to on the entire Polaris Long List . I hate to spread negativity but there was small but vocal contingent on the jury pool who were waving the flag hard for this album so I was by no means expecting the terrible 902s MTV crossover alt. rock throwback that assaulted my ear when I hit play on this one. It was just bad and I'm really looking sideways at anyway who seriously was digging this and thought it was worthy of wining any kind of creative award. I'm [...]

So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]

Happy 144th Birthday, Canada. The QBiM tradition of a homegrown party soundtrack continues with the latest edition of RADiO QBiM. Here's hoping all my North American friends have themselves a super and safe long weekend. (cover star: Stompin' Tom Connors) tracklisting: 01 Sloan "Unkind" 02 Handsome Furs "Repatriated" 03 The Rest "John Huston" 04 Caribou "Melody Day" 05 Kalle Mattson "Good Morning, Goodnight" 06 The Details "Weightless in the Dark" 07 City and Colour [...]

Hey, folks. We are putting the final details on something special for Canada Day, but since the lovely and talented Lana Gay was kind enough to have us on CBC3 today to talk about the project, we thought it made sense to release a trailer of sorts. Basically, we begged and pleaded with some of our favorite artists and cobbled together a massive tribute to the man, the icon, Gordon Lightfoot. Tomorrow we will put the whole kit and kaboodle online for any music lover to grab for free, but to whet your appetite [...]

Voting starts for this year's Polaris Prize tomorrow and after much humming and hawing (and precious little payola), I've narrowed down my list to the Top Five. A couple of records fought hard for inclusion - and I hope they make it through so I can vote for them in Round Two - but at the end of the day, the following records really hit me the hardest over and meant the most to me in the last twelve months. Are they the most recognizable LPs? Most certainly not, [...]

not too sure how i came across joel plaskett's most excellent 07 release ashtray rock , but im guessing the recommendation came from some filthy canadian cause thats where he hails from. anyway, said release is an awesome pop/rock record filled with huge hooks, high energy, great lyrics and all the while being a concept record. you can read about the story line here via wikipedia. anywho, mr plaskett has teamed up with shotgun jimmie - who i have never heard of, for a split 73 that was just recently released via new scotland records . [...]
