As we've been known to do for records that really excite us, we decided to ask Sackville legend Shotgun Jimmie to give us a track by track breakdown of his latest, guitar/drums/bass/synth opus, Transistor Sister . We will have much more to say about this record a bit closer to the release date, but for now let me just say that this is how nostalgia should be presented (I'm looking at you Hold Steady). It's a fond look back at love and inspiration, but [...]

Carole Lombard Shotgun Jimmie - "Waist Deep in the Water" I was reading an old copy of Trapped! that I found nestled deep away, and was enjoying it. It was an exciting tale of a lamplighter's son who, when asked to take over his father's position one night when he's ill, is suspected for a murderer and is chased by an unknown pursuer. The boy highjacks a boat to escape and is washed out to sea, and is trapped. But that's not the [...]
The [...]

It's a slow day here on the hill. Last night we were treated to two stellar sets; one from Basia Bulat and one from Owen Pallett and as a result, the review I had slated for today will be up tomorrow. Obviously, we will add some more detailed coverage and poor quality MP3s later, but the dichotomy of the two acts fit the venue perfectly. Basia, playing with instruments and songs that could have been as old as the walls of the church, filled the room with her powerful voice. Owen on the other [...]

Its a fine Friday here in Halifax, and if you are here, you are no doubt busy working out your weekend plans in order to take advantage of the lovely weather we seem to have on tap. Well let's see if we can assist with a quick rundown of some events of interest. I say some events, but really, we all know there's only one can't miss show this weekend: Rob Base at The Palace. I keed, but only slightly. If you know the Ack and I at all, you know very well that [...]

Shotgun Jimmie 's latest release Still Jimmie (which I reviewed here ) is not an album that I would say I pull out on a regular basis, but whenever I do, it instantly brings a smile to my face. It really is a solid album through and through, and I really don't know why I never think about it other than the fact that I listen to a lot of music and it's hard to remember everything. When I heard that he was coming to town and including an in-store at Soundscapes on his stay, [...]

Posted by Matt: Shotgun Jimmie - Used Parts Shotgun Jimmie - Mind Crumb How has your tour been so far? Tour has been great, I bought an old Garnet cab in Winnipeg. Its deadly. Is there a common theme on Still Jimmie ? The never ending battle of good vs evil. How did the duet with Simone on "Quicksand" [...]
What albums do you take with you on a 3 week drive from Toronto to Newfoundland and everywhere in between? The answer: ALL OF THEM, as it's a damn long time in a car. Thankfully, between a bevy of iPods, stowaway CDs stuffed in the car doors and those that we would accumulate on the way, there was more than enough music to go around. Of course, just like how Entire Cities won me over on a drive to Windsor last year , a few albums clawed their way to the dashboard more memorably than others this [...]

Reviews of Said The Whale, Jenn Grant & Shotgun Jimmie Due to the fact that I've received an insanely unmanageable amount of CD's to listen to and possibly review over the last few months, I figured that it was about time that I let you know a bit about some of the music that has entered my tympanic membrane over the last little while. Said The Whale : Howe Sounds / Taking Abalonia Although I've never claimed [...]

Still Jimmie is an appropriate name for the new album from Shotgun Jimmie (aka Jim Killpatrick). Not only does the title contain his name, which I find is always helpful, but it also serves as a little bit of re-assurance for folks who remember Jimmers from his last solo outing The Onlys, and might be a bit taken aback by his latest release. The difference is apparent right from the get-go, if you have a listen to the lead-off hitters from both albums. Whereas The Onlys opened with Duet , one of the [...]

What is it about music that doesn't sound perfect? You can create the most precisely crafted pop song, yet it'll still sound worse than the one next to it that is slightly off-time, or misses the odd note. Of course none of this can go so far that the music itself actually sounds amateurish, but giving your music that "we don't really give a shit vibe" does seem to make it cooler. Which leads me to Shotgun Jimmie. Musically it's all fine, gently strumming along while rarely becoming adventurous. It's the vocals that sell [...]

Shotgun Jimmie is a Sackville, NB musician who toured this past fall with Attack In Black and Ladyhawk. He brought his sense of humour and sarcasm with him as we asked him a few questions about his favorite music of 2008. Raised on Indie: What was your favorite album released in 2008? Shotgun Jimmie: Chad VanGaalen's Soft Airplane. Raised on Indie: Why does this album stand out to you amongst the rest? Shotgun Jimmie: It's taller Chad [...]

posted by Matt: I may have put his record out with my friend Steph on our short-lived label, Delorean Recordings, but I'm still gonna go on record and say that there wasn't much that came out in 2007 that was better than Shotgun Jimmie's The Onlys . Thirteen songs of top-grade lo-fi pop, it's a barn burner through and through. Jimmie stopped by the TFD tent awhile back and laid his five favorites list on us. Totally classic stuff, I couldn't agree more with all of his choices. He'll soon be [...]

'It Is Finally Time to Tell the Story' was written by Dave Eggers I would guess sometime in 2004 (and is kind of relevant what with all this elections-talk in the U.S.). Find it in ' Short Short Stories '. 'Yes, it is finally time to tell the story about the sheep from that one island whose name is forgotten but which rhymes with Godiva. There were too many sheep on this particular island, so some of them got on a boat [...]
I know we've talked about this year's Sappyfest a few times here on the hill, but I don't think we've posted our official preview post. So, uh, consider this that post. The fest takes place August 1-3 in Sackville, New Brunswick, and looking at the lineup , I have to think it's going to be quite the event. After all, the Ack and I are thinking about making the trip from Halifax to check it out, so that should be all the endorsement you need. No quite enough to convince you? [...]

( Delorean Recordings , Dec. 15, 2007) Strange as it sounds, Shotgun Jimmie was the student council president of my high school when I was in the 10th grade. Needless to say, that fact definitely adds an extra layer of context to my take on his latest solo release, The Onlys. Back at our old alma mater I knew Shotgun Jimmie simply as Jim Kilpatrick, but I honestly don't remember much about him other than the fact that he was the strange older kid who [...]

Taken from the latest Shotgun Jimmie solo release called The Onlys (a full review is forthcoming), "Bedhead" is the perfect soundtrack to an early morning road trip where the sun needs just as much help rising as you do. Undeniably charming and fun, this ought to be mandatory breakfast listening for everyone. Shotgun Jimmie - Bedhead He doesn't have any Toronto dates in the works for the near future, but if you're on the East Coast check out Shotgun Jimmie's Myspace [...]
I was a little negligent yesterday in my Golden Dogs update, as I forgot to mention that Shotgun Jimmie is opening for The Golden Dogs. Better known recently as half of the Sackville, New Brunswick duo Shotgun & Jaybird , Jimmie is getting ready to release a new solo album on Halifax's Delorean Recordings. Delorean is run by Matt Charlton and Stephanie d'Entremont (of The Superfantastics ) and they describe Shotgun's impending album thusly: Ol' Shotgun has come up with some real crushers this time around, with thirteen tracks that deliver a [...]
