I found a lot of great music this month, more than I can (or wish to) fit on this playlist. I purposefully ignored everything I featured in this post , also all discovered this month and highly recommended (and ps, some of these songs come from the same sources). Shugo Tokumaru: Lahaha [via Rawkblog ] Centro-Matic: Only In My Double Mind [via Pop Headwound ] Jason Urick: The Crying Song (Album Mix) [...]
BEST OF 2011 : Songs | Albums (soon) | EPs/Singles | Discoveries/Heavy Rotation | Photos A really good year! The first 40 or so are mega-jams and the latter 38 (Rawkblog loves you, baby) are still jams. I purposefully left out songs by Destroyer because I couldn't decide, so consider Kaputt represented. You can play the entire page with the handy Ex.fm player in the bottom right corner, stream the playlist on Spotify and Rdio , and download everything after the jump. [...]

I’m very much an advocate of escapism in all forms. You can see hints of those deep-seeded desires hidden in my daily life—for example, the page in my journal comprised of a long list of places in the world I want to visit before I die, or how I sometimes procrastinate by perusing articles from the travel section of the New York Times. Having grown up out in rural New Hampshire, something about unplugging and venturing out into the unknown appeals to me on an almost spiritual level. So, it’s only natural that I would also love music that features [...]

Shugo Tokumaru - Lahaha ( buy ) For when you need something that sounds like summer when it doesn't look like spring. Like Bibio but more cohesive. From his 2011 release Port Entropy .

Yes, we've made it! Another month closes as quickly as it came into play. From Addison Groove's 808 inspired album for 3024, Cosmin TRG's A Universal Crush EP , Teams' spectral psyche LP, and JonWayne's own Alpha Pup full-length, April has undoubtedly seen its fair share of talent. Skim through all eight pages of recommendations, as I’m sure you’ll find something worth picking up.

They say music is the universal language; if that's true, they should put Shugo Tokumaru in charge of the dictionary. On the Japanese musician's fourth full-length, Port Entropy , he communicates with music so emotionally vivid its meaning would be impossible to mistake. More often than not, that emotion is joy as bright as the noonday sun, his major-key melodies skipping like expertly thrown stones. Tokumaru's music is best compared to the clockwork orchestrations of Jonsi's Go - a sound Shugo got to first. "Lahaha," the new album's best song, sets the tone with on-beat [...]

The reputation that had preceded Shugo Tokumaru before listening to this disc was one of home-recorded-pop mastery. Notes of his use of over 100 instruments abound, as well as his apparently skyrocketing status in his native Japan. Considering the state of lo-fi, bedroom recordings in America, one couldn't be faulted (I hope) for expecting drugged-out, scuzzy, reverbed, even sadsack from another bedroom record. Instead, as the cutesy MS Paint-style drawings on the cover of Port Entropy suggest, this is a record bursting at the seems with childlike joy and wonder. The only problem that this sort [...]

Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. Magne Sandnes Originality is an important trait, no question about that, but sometimes slavish imitation can be alright too, particularly when it explores a sound or style that's not already been strip-mined to death and is done well. And so it is that Norway's Megaphonic Thrift get a pass for their debut album Decay Decoy , released in Norway last Spring and due out in North America on March 8. When I saw the band at SxSW 2010 , their '90s alt.guitar rock influences, in particular [...]
