On the heels of one of their finest albums, Sic Alps nail the follow up with a trio of songs that lean towards their poppiest and still hardest hitting sides. The title track, "She's On Top" is all detached swagger and low slung licks, pounding out a hard-knuckled bit of guitar crunch. They slow for a second to cool it off on "Carrie Jean" and then run full steam into closer "Biz Bag" with that same gristled blast of psych-pop fury. Considering the heft and heart of the last record, these are certainly no leftovers, so be they one-off [...]
So what was all this hew and cry and Sic Alps going pop? The three songs on this 12 inch may have a bit more coherent melodic sense that some other tracks in the band’s basket, but they also are so firmly rooted in muddy psych and backwoods improvisation that fans of last year’s debut record have little to worry about. Even they may find deeper levels into Sic Alps’ sound as new ears join them for the ride. “She’s On Top” is pure grinding, garage pop, and the most similar to their signature sound. With “Carrie Jean,” [...]
The top mp3s have gone through many incarnations since the beginning of Consequence of Sound in 2007. What used to be an exhaustive roundup of all the singles, remixes, covers, and undiscovered gems emailed to us any given week evolved into a compilation whittled down to our 10 favorite new songs. For 2013, we’re again changing up the format with the hope of giving our selections some added weight. We’re still posting about our 10 favorite songs, but they’ll be ordered in quality from 10-1. Who takes home #1 this week? You’ll have to click ‘Next’ to find [...]
The Hemlock seems an unlikely venue for Noise Pop. The oversized cutesy animated Noise Pop banner looked out of place behind the tiny stage in the dingy nethers of a club that prides itself on featuring "a bleeding-edge, non-mainstream mix of local, national and international bands...subgenres, scenes and microscenes." Like putting a Hello Kitty sticker on a murky bong. That said, it seemed like any ol' night at the Hemlock - a veritable mix of the too cool for school, too stoned for school, and TL party party people (some of which I wager to guess have never stepped foot [...]

This is another strange but exciting combo-disc from Drag City. First up is the shaggy dog story ‘Here Today Here Tomorrow’ from Freakapuss, a.k.a. Zarjazz from Tronics. This mixes his cultured Pete Astor-like vocals with a Bo Diddley beat, producing something very entertaining but of doubtful musical sanity. It’s paired with ‘New Trawgs III’ by Sic Alps, which is stoner pop with a mellow edge that just keeps getting fuzzier with each verse. This is Freakapuss’s first release, and Sic Alps’ uncounted latest one, and both are well worth hearing.
Local favorites Thee Oh Sees recently announced a two-night stand at The Independent on January 11th and 12th, and they didn't scrimp when booking the supporting acts – Sic Alps and Warm Soda open the first night, and Warm Soda returns with The Mallard on night number two. Unless you've been living in a hole, you know that John Dwyer and company had an eventful 2012, releasing their eleventh studio album Putrifiers II [...]

Well the end of 2012 is drawing to a close and we've run down the albums that got the most play around RSTB this year. To avoid the list just being a mass of Ty Segall albums Twins (a personal fave of the bunch) takes the place on the list but the other two would have easily made the list, especially the collab with White Fence which got plenty of play around here as well. Some really great releases this year and a banner year for both Drag City and Sacred Bones with some heavy inclusions in our list. [...]
Inviting the punk rockers into the fancypants art gallery to play can often spell trouble. What if, like, one of the anarchist neckbeards feels that the fresco on the east wall gives off oppressive vibes, or the in-flight mic stands finds the atrium's glass sculpture less than agreeable? Yet for certain factions of art punk, the milieu feels almost more appropriate than the cool neighborhood's celebrated dive. The dynamic slacker psych crunch of Sic Alps and fun time glam doom dudes Cross vibed real nice in the Kentucky Arts and Crafts Museum - a beautiful, angular space with eclectic exhibits [...]

Sic Alps – Sic Alps
You may not have heard of the Bay Area band Sic Alps, but the respected garage pop band is out with their fifth full length, an eponymously titled set of ten distorted, guitar laden tracks. The four piece comprised of Mike Donovan (vocals), Douglas Armour (drums), Tim Hellman (bass), and Noel von Harmonson – with occasional collaborations from Ty Segall, have been working steadily, playing with Pavement in 2010 on the European leg of their tour as well as their own 2011 release Napa Asylum. Sic Alps is a consistently great record full of thoughtful compositions and nuanced layers, however [...]
