Veteran Detroit electronic music journalist Dan Sicko passed away on Sunday after a lengthy battle with ocular melanoma, a rare form of eye cancer. He was 42. In the pre-Internet '80s and '90s where techno was relegated to the underground, Sicko helped document the burgeoning Motor City scene led by Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins. His book 1999 book, Techno Rebels , paid homage to the music and served as a first-hand account of the music's ascension in Detroit and beyond. In addition to his music writing, Sicko worked in advertising as [...]
Hear The Track HereThe last time I reviewed London horrorcore rapper Whitman Speck, as well as the usual frisson of fear and loathing brought on by the sordid tales of life in gritty, urban, downtown Palmers Green, I was also treated to a further immersion in the subject of blood, guts and mayhem by a kind reader who gave me an excellent rundown on the differences between serial killers and mass

The Harlem Shakes have broken up . If you live outside of New York City this news likely means nothing to you and if you do live here, you're likely thinking either "meh", "who?", or maybe even "that's too bad". Put me into the "that's too bad" category. Actually, put me into the "this really blows" category. For whatever reason, the Harlem Shakes were as a cruelly overlooked, ignored, and under appreciated band as their has been in New York this decade. They were never flashy, never seriously buzzed about, never given much attention [...]
Number 5 of the Pop Punk Junk series is awesome. Sicko, The Ergs!, my favorite Descendents song, and even the often overlooked Hagfish, how could you go wrong? I remember when Amy bought the Hagfish record on vinyl at Missing Link Records in Indianapolis back in '98. That store (like so many other great record stores) is now closed. Those were the days... What do sickos and carpetbaggers have in common besides an unhappy childhood? They have Harlem Shakes to sing about them. They started out with a more rock oriented sound, but after a lot of alterations within the band they found themselves a definite lineup and a sound. Indie pop with a hint of Latin music and synthezisers. In spite of the latest hyped bands from Brooklyn, Harlem Shakes prove that holding onto pop tunes can be rewarding. In 2007 they self-released the Burning Birthdays EP, took a short break to get some education and are now back with [...]

H ow many of you are wondering, "What's with all this pop punk?" Well, both my wife and I cut our teeth on pop punk and the like way back when and have been having a rousing good time time going through old records and generally walking down memory lane. But not only are we sharing our favorite classics with you, we are also throwing in songs from the new wave of great pop punk bands out there. And again, if you have any suggestions for volumes 5-??? just drop us a line. [...]
In my last Spot-on column, I took a look at Michael Moore's new movie Sicko . Lots of people are writing about it, largely from a public policy standpoint, but I wanted to look at it more as a film. Moore takes a lot of heat, even from his supporters, for some of his techniques, and I wanted to explore the possible justification for his emphasis on emotion and drama over facts and accuracy. Just the Facts, Ma'am, Just the Facts? [...]
I found this full length version on the film ' Sicko ' , Michael Moore 's new scathing documentary on the U.S. healthcare system, by searching Google . It first appeared to me on Digg , though that specific link led to a video that had been removed. So I typed in " Michael Moore 's Sicko full movie" into the Google search box, and was met with a plethora of results. Many of the video's have been removed, most particulary at the [...]

mp3: Dateless Losers mp3: Who Owes Dear Sicko- i am crazy about you. seriously, i have never liked a pop punk band more than i like you. did you really think oj was innocent though? i mean seriously. do you still think that? i just wonder. also, i decided to start posting pop punk on fridays instead of saturdays because it just seems better to kick off the weekend with some pop punk as opposed to ending it with some, and [...]
The covers in today's post are as random as ever, but I think I can honestly say that I pretty much like them all. Heh. "Pretty much." Way to commit, huh? Seriously, there is something I do like in all of these tracks and I hope you do too. Oh, and hello to any new visitors who've found this as a result of the piece on covers in the new issue of Oxford American . (And thanks to Boyhowdy who alerted me [...]
