It's nothing short of astonishing that an ambient Icelandic band who don't sing in English or write songs in a verse-chorus structure are filling arenas across the US. Some of the next acts to p... Continue reading "Sigur Ros at Verizon Theatre, 4/8/13: Review and Photos" >

After last year’s success, the European post rock festival institution DUNK!FESTIVAL decided to go bigger. One stage more, bigger space for merch and music sales and an extended line up are the logical step into the next level. Again the local team worked very hard to set up a professional festival infrastructure in a really The post Dunk!Festival 2013 - A Look Back appeared first on Nothing But Hope And Passion - NBHAP - Music Magazine & more .

Mt.

For those unfamiliar with my Icelandic music fetish, experimental-classical music or that one song he did on The Hunger Games soundtrack, Ólafur Arnalds is a former hardcore drummer gone neo-classical producer who's been quietly acquiring representation as one of the most talented and ethereal musicians from Iceland. His stylistic range is one thing, but his undeniably hypnotic and captivating instrumental work functions on a thematic level so high, it feels as if it couldn't possibly have come from human hands. Past records such as ...and they have escaped the weight [...]
It has been several years since I last saw Sigur Rós in Kansas City. That performance was a the now-defunct Madrid theater, and that show was memorable for a couple of reasons: first, the band was as impressive live as advertised.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Sigur Rós @ UIC Pavillion, Chicago (4/2/13) Sigur Rós live is unlike any other rock concert experience out there. They begin the night behind a giant screen which projects large silhouette of themselves. The guitar is primarily played using a cello bow. There’s enough backing musicians on stage to perhaps qualify as a small orchestra. Many of the songs are sung in a made-up language nicknamed Hopelandic, the rest in Icelandic (singing a long is not really an option). There’s almost zero crowd interaction from the band at any point. The [...]
Middle of the Map Fest officially starts tonight, but the best show in town is about seven miles northeast, at Starlight Theatre, where the Icelandic post-rock titans in Sigur Ros is performing. The group has a well-earned reputation as one of the finest live acts in the world.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Photo: Geoff Leung Sigur Rós . Jónsi. The end. Alright fine. There is a little more to it than that. The Icelandic marvel hit the saintly city last night with a near two-hour performance at Roy Wilkins Auditorium. A battalion of extraterrestrial bodies could have landed and busted through every locked door in the Twin Cities and I, as well as the other few thousand people at the Roy, would have been oblivious. Beauty and craftsmanship is the bottom line [...]

It might be a blessing in disguise that my iPhone died the day of the Sigur Ros concert. My inevitable crappy Instagram pictures that I was bound to take during the visual and audio spectacle that occured would have done the show injustice. And my god, what a visual and audio spectacle it was. Playing Toronto for the second time in eight months, the Icelandic group opted for a theatre configuration inside a cavernous ACC, which in result created a far different atmosphere then the Echo Beach show. Whereas the latter show was one [...]
I had the luxury of seeing the Sigur Ros tour last summer when they played a magnificent set on the lake shore just outside of downtown Toronto (see picture above). With the skyline as their backdrop they played through almost two full hours of absolutely gorgeous music. If you like even one song from the band I highly recommend that you get out and see their current tour . You will not be disappointed. Speaking of their ongoing world tour - the band from Iceland is doing it in support of an upcoming all new album that [...]

The band's 7th LP, Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, translates to, “With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly.” That's both true and not true because, yes, Sigur Rós songs can be very long by some standards, but the band lives for the ending. Each note that happens in the first minute of the song is in service of the very last minute of the son. That's what Sigur Rós do best. They can't wait to build to that climax and then release, no matter how long they keep you waiting. These linear songs throughout their [...]

For the sake of full disclosure, I have to admit that I've been a huge fan of Sigur Ros for over a decade. I had never seen them live before this past Saturday night, though, when they took the stage at the Air Canada Centre. The first two songs, the brand new "Yfirborð" and the slow, moody "Ný Batterí" from the band's breakout album Ágætis byrjun , were performed under a gigantic sheet. Front man Jónsi Birgisson's silhouette towered over the audience as he used his trademark cello bow on his guitar - [...]
Sweeping, cinematic, vibrant, beautiful, epic, delicate, bold, calm, majestic. It's pretty easy to roll off a list of adjectives for this absolutely wonderful record as Rhian Sheehan returns with the impossibly beautiful and uncompromisingly compelling Stories from Elsewhere. Happy first of April (April Fool's Day) and Easter Monday. I was suppose to have a phone interview with one member of Purity Ring on my radio show . But due to rehearsing for the start of the tour, the interview didn't happen. So I had to scurry to make a load whack of songs to play for the one hour. If you missed the show today, have a listen !
