about 4 years ago, i made a little introduction to one of my favorite bands, chicago's silkworm. sadly, they are no longer as they broke up after the death of drummer michael dalqhuist . michael was in a car accident in a northern suburb of chicago which was caused by a "model" who was attempting to commit suicide. sadly, she was not killed, but michael and two other chicago musicians, doug meis and john glick. very sad, shit. well, i have never stopped listening to em, as they put out some of my favorite records from 902s/002s [...]
Well, night one in Las Vegas met our expectations. It ended with Tom scooping me up off the bathroom floor in a Canadian cheerleader's hotel room and walking me back to my hotel. I was doing so well until that waitress at Monte Carlo starting bringing us two or three drinks and tequila shots at [...]

Sundays suck when there's no Giants game to watch. RULES for uninitiated noobs: I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just [...]

Bottomless Pit — Pitch From Congress (EP) ( Comedy Minus One ; 2008) See what a moment can be / It can make you feel lighter, it can ruin you
I was once in a car driving to Princeton Record Exchange with a friend. He reached for a CD and inserted it into his car stereo. As the first song began to play, I studied the artwork and song titles. Italian Platinum. What the fuck does that mean? I thought about it for a few [...]

Silkworm — Wild in My Day From Libertine (El Recordo/ Matador ; 1994) Everything that you said reverberates in my head / We were wild, we were wild

This was my first time seeing The Mountain Goats , which may sound a bit dissonant. There's no real great reason I've never seen them (same reason I haven't seen Heat yet, I know!), it's simply circumstantial happenings that brought me to my inaugural John Darnielle show only last night at The Vic in Chicago. Due diligence was paid and enjoyed ahead of the concert, having dug Darnielle's extensive repertoire for years. Now, live in front of an eager crowd, the songs flexed and breathed in new ways - all while maintaining vim and positivity. If you captured [...]

I didn't rally much around boozy bands during college. My head was usually up in cloudier landscapes. And yet, I always had heart for Silkworm. Still do, especially since a lot of '90s indie rock has a sad habit of wilting before my adult ears. There's no Springsteen-aping celebration of wild, fleeting, beer-soaked youth here. Just drunk drunkenness that staggers around stage, threatening to fall down and not get up. Well, maybe there actually is something a little poetic about that. Silkworm - Drunk

Filed under: News Are you already tired of politics this season? Well, we have a campaign that rock fans can get behind without any headaches. Taking to the increasingly popular online funding model, Tim Midgett of Silkworm has started a drive to pay off the mortgage for Steve Albini 's legendary Electrical Audio studio and finally get the famed technician full ownership of the property. Albini, a Chicago-based engineer and the unofficial leader of Shellac , has manned the boards and worked microphone magic [...]

A list of the best albums of the decade compiled by Chris Besinger of Minneapolis' STNNNG.

in case you weren't aware, or too soused to realise, this week is alcohol awareness week . now for a semi-retired bukowski like m'self i have been and always am aware of booze but apparently this week i've to be ever more vigilant of its wily ways and means. and in typical patronising public sector politicking the health at work team here (yes there are a group of people dedicated to ensuring i stay healthy) proffered up this entirely unironic little intellectual nugget: a small or large measure of fruit juice or soft drink [...]

Another double whammy on the mix tape front, this week. After last Monday's Wu-Tang/D.I.T.C./Major Lazer marathon, I'm toning things down a little with some forward thinking beat treats from 'Mr Worldwide' Gilles Peterson and his buddies at Brownswood Recordings, and a nice little instrumental offering from ex-Digable Planet DJ and all-round quality music man King Britt. First up, Gilles and the gang come through with 'Best of Bubblers': A Brownswood Mixtape. This great little compilation sets the scene for the upcoming release of the fourth installment of the Brownswood Bubblers series , which [...]
unlike our dear old greedy, grubbing, public purse snatching, it's-all-within-the-rules-bu llshitting, moat dredging, house renovating, capital gains tax avoiding, lying hypocritical bastard politicians i dear readers can hold my hands up and say hey losers, i made a mistake. see when i first got hold of the retribution gospel choir record i pretty much dismissed it, gave [...]

The Gary Chub EP ( Cedar Fever ) The Gary's origins are on the Comal River, July 2008. Paul Warner paddled over to Dave Norwood and suggested they start a band called The Gary. Dave saw no reason why they shouldn't play in a band called The Gary, and so it began. It should be noted that both were several beers into their river journey, and it [...]
