As you may already know, but I'll state it nonetheless for those who do not, I have a weekly radio show on KSVR Mount Vernon, KSVU Hamilton and KSJU Friday Harbor. You can tune in via the respective dial pinpoints if you live within those townships, or you can stream from KSVR.org . We will be hosting our pledge drive in April, so I thought I'd kick things off by doing something no other station in Skagit or (to my knowledge) the surrounding areas does: a vinyl only night. My March [...]

Here are a few last words on 2012. Local flavor I didn't hear enough local (Chicago) releases in 2012 to create a definitive best-of list for the year. (This is something I want to rectify in 2013.) But I did hear some really good albums, including those made by Radar Eyes, Disappears, Hollows (pictured above) and Wes Hollywood . Check these artists out. I also really liked soul / R&B revivalists The Right Now . Replicate - Disappears Guilty [...]

Michael Zapruder has always had a voracious appetite for creation. In 1999, he recorded one new song a week and released it on a compilation, aptly titled 52 Songs . Then, from 2003 to 2011, Zapruder was in charge of curation at Pandora.com , and in between there, the San Francisco savant has released four full-length LPs. His latest, Pink Thunder, collects free-verse pop art-songs from 23 poets, three engineers, and a few dozen musicians including members of tUnE-yArDs, Silver Jews, Tyondai Braxton and more. The little cut "Civics", penned by Silver Jews singer/songwriter [...]
As the little monsters finally begin to leave the house again, let's take a moment to look at the songs about that wonderful place that keeps them out of our hair; school. It happens every year; that magical time when the kids head back to school. We all dreaded September as children. [...]

When news of a new recording from enigmatic Antipodean vanguardists The Avalanches dribbled through byte by byte, I was haphazardly linked into the highly questionable nonentity that is the Italian internet. Hogging what was most probably approximately an eighth of the entire country's bandwidth, I downloaded A Cowboy Overflow Of The Heart and it's been floating about my thoughts ever since. It had been over a decade since they'd released anything original (something of a contradiction, perhaps when considering the Victorian audio pirates' modus operandi) and longer still since Since I Left You , one [...]

Though it appears to have sold out immediately, hopefully they'll restock. Dam also has a new Prince cover, "17 Days," coming out today, as the B-side to [...]

Go here and sign up to hear the track. There should be wings of libraries dedicated to motels. Damp wings you have to follow a broken neon sign through cobwebs to reach. The pages are stuck together and some of the books just have the same word written over and over. Each book a different word but just repeating and repeating. You have to pull on a chain to turn on the light. There's a guy writing poetry in the bathroom on the mirror or [...]
Over the course of this year, it seems like The Avalanches, the Australian plunderphonics collective responsible for the universally-heralded Since I Left You , have been more interested in teasing the music blogosphere than actually leaking any material from their sophomore album purportedly slated for release this year. With featured artist reveals (including the boisterous Danny Brown and Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux/RTX/Black Bananas fame), a mysterious mixtape that ultimately had nothing to do with the band, and a supposedly new track turning out to be a very, very old demo, fans of the band seem to be trapped [...]

No promises about any other output from either the Avalanches or the Silver Jew, David Berman. We'll take it, how we get it. It's said that this demo is the first piece of work that DB has worked on since the Silver Jews. Even it was only a poem reading, the demo has the feel of catching Haley's comet. Avalanches [ft. David Berman] A Cowboy Overflow of the Heart (demo) [mp3]
As many of you might have seen earlier this morning, the Avalanches dropped a new song on their website, which crashed shortly thereafter. This seems to be a common theme with the group, you know, trickery and deception. But that is why we love them. Anyway, we finally have audio of the new song, which appears to be a demo, really. Featuring David Berman of the Silver Jews reciting a rather sophisticated poem of sorts, the background music slowly chugs along with all sorts of random bits of sound. Yup, this is typical Avalanches form right here. Stream [...]
Remember when Stephen Malkmus was a part of Silver Jews? "Secret Knowledge Of Back Roads" is a testament to the trio's young, unpolished sound. Before Silver Jews was country, it was '90s analog music, and Drag City is commemorating those early days with the release of Early Times. Download "Secret Knowledge Of Back Roads" below. "Secret [...]
Twenty years later, this music still sounds surprising, something lo-fi groups today can't easily accomplish, while also sounding like just some dudes goofing around for fun. Listen to later Silver Jews albums, when David Berman is almost a literary figure, articulating human quandaries with humor and poetry, and it's easy to forget the group's ramshackle beginnings as a lo-fi mess-around project for Berman and two members of Pavement, Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. It seems almost quaint now, to look back at that time period, pre-Google, when you couldn't instantly learn all the facts about a band. The first [...]
An early, rough look at the Silver Jews. 2012, Drag City 5.0 / 10.0 Early Times, the new compilation of early recordings by the Silver Jews (David Berman, Stephen Malkmus, and Bob Natasnovich), is interesting in two ways: one is the voyeuristic aspect of listening to Silver Jews goof [...]

You'll be forgiven if you've lost your way in the midst of the summer and aren't aware of Silver Jews' new collection of old recordings appropriately titled Early Times . In addition to the video, take in "Secret Knowledge of Back Roads" while you're on your way. purchase
This promo for Silver Jews' just-released album, Early Times , is pretty entertaining. The album is a reissue of very early EPs, featuring Pavement's Stephen Malkmus . Secret Knowledge of Back Roads - Silver Jews Also see Silver Jews early recordings released next month
Yeah this is exactly what I needed today - a Silver Jews promo for new reissue LP "Early Times." Ah, to be an (overgrown) kid again. (full info at Drag City )
Let’s get a few things out of the way right off the bat. I love the Silver Jews . I love everything about them, from when David Berman, Stephen Malkmus, and Bob Nastanovich met at UVA and formed the band right around the same time Malkmus and Nastanovich were starting up Pavement, all the way up through Berman refusing to tour behind his records until the release of 2005’s Tanglewood Numbers . I also dig the abrupt way Berman closed the casket on the project, playing their final show in 2009 at the very literally underground Cumberland Caverns just outside [...]

This is has to be one of the thinnest weeks this year for new releases by so-called 'big' named artists, with the exception of Silver Jews and Fiona Apple. In fact, Apple released her first album in seven years this week.
