It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. Pacific Pride is a pack of musicians ranging from yacht-pop to psychedelic and experimental, namely Tennis drummer John Barone,Robert Ballentyne from Tjutjuna, Germaine Baca from Old Time Relijun , with the main songwriting duties taken by Paul Garcia. There are certainly influences of yesteryear from bands like Silver Jews and Pavement .Even the song title "Yankee Soda" looks like a track off American Water, but where Berman/Malkmus remained uniform, Pacific Pride jams out. I was lucky enough to get to see the silver jews in concert on their last tour. It was an amazing show that ended in one of the craziest ways. (If you'd like to know the story, ask, and maybe I'll get to it in the comment section). I found out a few months later that they were calling it quits and it made me sad as hell. Every new song we hear from London-based indie upstarts Yuck is the newest reason why we love the band. And while the quartet has been giving away "Rubber" for free since October, only today did it drop this visually stunning and curiously provocative video for the track. The clip conflates lingering and rapidly looped footage of dog grooming with lingering footage of a woman washing herself in a shower. It's just weird. But the images have that super crisp quality that you'll remember started cropping up in MTV videos of a certain late era.
