We're reviewing some of our favorite (and mostly undiscovered) releases of 2012: Simone White 's intimate and ethereal chamber/folk acousticism gets a major makeover on her third full length Silver Silver (May 8, Honest Jon's), her wispy, whispered vocals intact but now augmented with an equally delicate, occasionally intense array of cool electronic textures, tapping beats and an atmosphere lifted from some shadowy dreamscape. From the opening seconds you realize that there's a subtle whiff of dark, arty theatricality wafting thoughout her elegant songs, the strains of [...]

Echo Park-based songwriter Simone White shows a more adventurous side on her new album, "Silver Silver." The new music is a change of pace from her folky style found on previous releases. As opposed to those earlier albums where White worked with Nashville producer Mark Nevers, she stayed local this time around and worked with Samuel Bing and Julian Wass of LA band Fol Chen. Listening to the songs on the album gives the impression that White was searching for an alternate world. The first single, " What the Devil Brings ", is full of unconventional motion. Instead [...]
Folk singer-songwriter Simone White has always had a keen sense of storytelling. Her folk/country-tinged 2007 debut, "I Am the Man" and 2009’s quiet offering "Yakiimo" gently pierced listeners with a soft synthesis of intimacy and intelligence. But come May 7, the White will no longer be defined by her wispy vocals, when "Silver Silver" is released on Damon Albarn's Honest Jon's label. The new record still maintains White's sharp wit, but it also showcases something new — collaborations with the many new friends she's made along the way during the process of recording it. Collaborating with artists she [...]

It is Easter. I'm using it as an excuse to give you an entirely contrived and slightly spurious soundtrack for that Egg hunt. On the other hand, some cracking tunes to add to your iTunes library. There's a fine line between a song that drags on too long and a song that ends too soon. I've actually wanted a reason to post a few of these tracks before, but held off on the basis that they're too short - most of them clock in at less than a minute. Today's Friday Five theme is songs that we wish were longer! These five tracks cover a lot of territory, from well-known artists like Jamie xx to the lesser known singer-songwriter Simone White. The common thread is their brevity - but what they lack in [...]

Fol Chen feat. Simone White : I Walked ( Sufjan Stevens Cover) - MP3 On n’a jamais caché notre amour pour Fol Chen . Et là, le band tape en plein dans le mille avec cette magnifique reprise de I Walked feat. Simone White . Une version superbe et déchirante. Un gros (gros) coup de cœur à écouter sans modération! It’s been a long time we [...]

How long that wild rush lasted I have no means of judging. It may have been an hour, a day, or many days, for I was throughout in a state of suspended animation, but presently my senses began to return and with them a sensation of lessening speed, a grateful relief to a heavy pressure which had held my life crushed in its grasp, without destroying it completely. It was just that sort of sensation though more keen which, drowsy in his bunk, a traveller feels when he is aware, without special perception, harbour is reached and a voyage comes [...]

Andrew Bird returned to the bay area this past weekend for two sold out shows at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. It's been 10 years since he played Santa Cruz, and he seemed blissfuly happy to be back. I was fortunate enough to see him perform both nights. Both performances were wonderful, but for me, Friday night has that special something that will etch it in my memory for years to come. Simone White , a beautiful chantress with Dylanesque curls and perfect diction opened for Bird. She seemed to [...]

Above..The Royal family. They probably wouldn't like this post.. Hopefully you will though.. I've given you a couple of things I've stumbled across already this week, but here's a comprehensive roundup for you. Regular FPK visitors may be familiar with the work of Adam Smith , who's superb remix of Hot Chip was featured here recently. In addition to that, he has also remixed Florence & The Machine 's megahit You Got The Love, with a lot of synths! You can catch more of Adam's work on his [...]
