Tweet Sometimes we listen to good music and forget to blog about it, a few months later we come back to it and remember and then a blog is delivered. On other occasions we listen to a band and think: Did we already blog this? Or; did I listen to this already, like it, but then forget to blog about it and now can't recall listening to it? Yeah, I know our own dumbness is a constant stumbling block. Just come and try and find the ironing board in SGTMT HQ. No idea. Anyways, [...]
Love is beautiful, love is kind. Love is awfully messy. And when you're young, everything about love feels life-changing, whether it's the first kiss, the first break-up, or all the invigorating, frustrating, mushy stuff in between. Perhaps a part of each of us yearns for those early versions of attraction and devotion, before we'd fully [...]
Few things are as filled with longing as a young heart. Few things burn hotter or faster than young love. The video for "Simple Kids", from U.K. five-piece Story Books , is shot in muted colors, faded like an old memory. As a soft, creaky vocal reminisces about a former relationship we see a character on screen revisiting old haunts filled with ghosts of a past girlfriend. He goes to a party and remembers when he was there with her. He treks to a bar and sees her face. We hear the chorus, "Stay close to your troubles, don't [...]
Hailing from Kent (actually the Isle of Sheppey, off the coast) in the U.K., Story Books have been quietly building some low-keyed blogosphere buzz across the pond, thanks to an exceptionally promising 2012 single, "Peregrine" and a string of sold-out shows. Now the good folks at Communion, the label co- founded by Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons and producer Ian Grimble, are in the picture with the band's forthcoming EP Too Much A Hunter arriving April 28 via the respected imprint. Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Hey Rosetta!) produced the new [...]
In early 2011 it appeared for all intents and purposes that Simple Kid was no more, a simple message adorned website 'Simple Kid RIP'. A brief but fruitful and exciting musical talent lost. Following a serendipitous discovery on spotify, it seems all is not lost. Despite this announcement proclaiming the demise of Simple Kid, a new single, 'The [...]
I never really noticed Simple Kid when he was active, (maybe I was put off by the trucker's cap he always seemed to be hiding under), and now it seems he has sold all his music making toys and kit and retired from "The Biz". But he did at least leave us all with something to remember him by in the form of a "lost demo" which was picked up by Mister Marc Riley and played out on his 6music show. The response was good and in turn the good people at Static [...]

Photo by Denise Guerin Below, you can listen to a previously unreleased song that Birdie Busch performed with Irish musician Simple Kid . Birdie wrote on her Facebook page: fun duet i did with "simple kid" from the UK a lil' ways back. it was never released, and Kieran has taken a fork in the road away from music, but share with a friend if ye like it! Only When Young by Birdie Busch

I will admit to not being a good Listening Room participant. I haven't been in a few months and was always bummed I was missing new acts. I made a resolve to check out last night's show and it was nothing less than a perfect return to the series. Matt Lisk started off the evening with a collection of mellow acoustic songs on guitar as well as piano (a baby grand stood at the side of the stage). He whistled the guitar part of one song, dedicated beautiful songs to his [...]
A while back myself and my mate Leigh (Easy Music For Difficult Ears) decided on the idea of blogswap/joint post. The premise simple; a double whammy of his regular 'Something for the Weekend' feature. We begin in 1977 with Leigh taking an extensive look at The Normal, while I roll back a couple of years to sample [...]

In just a little over a year from now, I'll be turning 30. Being as close to it as I am, it doesn't really seem so old anymore. I remember as a kid, even teenagers seemed like grown-ups to me, let alone 30-year-olds! By the time you're 30, you have a career and a house and a husband and kids and everything! Or so I thought. Sure, I have a job, and it's a real job insomuch as it involves neither working a cash register nor dunking a basket of French fries into hot oil. I [...]
Rambling along like a stupid drunk who has just been dropped to the kerb by inconsiderate and untrustworthy "friends", comes the third Easy Music for Difficult Ears Spotify Playlist. Alas, it's May and things should be all sunny and glorious; however I have never done sunny and glorious and have no intentions of being happy now.In a ill-conceived attempt to soothe my sullen brow, here is May's

It does only seem like last year when there was a debate in the media about what to call this decade. I've really enjoyed reading the various 'best of ...' lists in the media and on the blogsphere. This post aims to outline my perspective on the Irish Music Scene over the last decade! By the year 2000, we had accumulated a wealth of disposable income which in the main resulted in more of us attending gigs, more of us learning to play instruments and more [...]

I know I'm repeating myself but it really was great to see that Simple Kid's two albums made it into Cluas.com's top 50 albums in the last 10 years. This is especially pleasing when you consider SK has been in hibernation in London for a number of years now! 'Staring At The Sun' originally appears on SK1 but here is the live version which appears on the Other Voices 2 album! Staring At The Sun Well I started out strong And my hopes were high I figured I’ll be like [...]

Tomorrow marks the start of my residence for Blogger of the Week on Break Thru Radio. It is a cross promotional week where my regular 2 U I Bestow features appear on the BTR website and I make the radio show Anatomy of a Blogger. This show is based on the musical influences of Mixtape4melfi and 2 U I Bestow blogs. Within the tracks chosen are international acts such as David Ford, Jaymay, The National and The Gutter Twins as well as the following Irish acts I have chosen. This radio broadcast will appear on Thursday and can be accessed [...]

Just like most things Glen Hansard does, the relationship split from Marketa Irglova has arrived into the public domain in a very low key way. He recently answered a question from an Australian journalist stating ..... ..... "We had made the film. We had gone through so much with the Oscar. Of course, we fell into each other's arms. It was a very necessary part of our friendship but I think we both concluded that that wasn't what we really wanted to do. So we're not together now. We are just really good friends." ...... ..... [...]

I bought this book last week for next to nothing and kinda speed read it while my twins were at Judo. The Polysyllabic Spree is a collection of book reviews Nick Hornby wrote for The Believer magazine during the years 2003 and 2004. A few things struck me while reading it. Firstly were the wise words from Nick when he advises in the introduction to stop reading a book if it's not good! Great advice! I'm often struck by hearing people saying it was a good book but I struggled through it! Why struggle? I suppose it's like music blogs, [...]

Here's another nice one for your autumn strolls through parks and tree-lined streets. Simple Kid - You
