Taking some time off from the Blog after the election. Don't forget about me in the interim. I will be back soon and I have a lot of great new ideas for the blog. Hang in there until I am back. Meanwhile, let's revisit one of the best things to come out of the 802s.....The Breakfast Club!
The funny thing for me about this song is that I had completely forgotten about it yet it was one of my favourite songs when I was a kid. It samples a Simple Minds song 'New Gold Dream' that I have also posted below.

Young Scottish singer/songwriter Sean Kennedy was brought to my attention by Irvine Beat FM presenter Ben Grant recently. Irvine born and bred Sean [...]

Simple-minded, enjoyable and sounds a little bit like Chiddy Bang . I'm sure people will make the argument that maybe Chiddy Bang sounds like Shwayze, but in this particular case, I stand behind it being the former. Enjoy this bit of feel-good music!
When folk talk about music television shows from the 1980s nowadays it's generally the same old programmes that get a mention: Top of the Pops, The Tube, Whistle Test . But when did you last hear someone extolling the virtues of early 80s BBC Manchester Saturday morning kids' magazine programme Get Set For Summer ? Not recently I'll wager. But then that's what makes this blog different: we're not afraid to talk up stuff that no one gives a toss about may have slipped out of fashion or the public's consciousness down the years. [...]

Classic acid techno rework of 'that' Simple minds synth line that's been sampled sooo many times from their 'Theme from great cities'. Notable appearances include Corporation of one's 'Real Life' and even Dominik Eulberg's 'Potzblitz & Donnerwetter' . Moby recently provided an official remix for the original which was pressed on 1000 vinyls for this year's record day. Stunning set of keys, it's easy to see why they've cropped up continually over the past 25 years! DERRICK MAY | THE DANCE SIMPLE MINDS | THEME FROM GREAT CITIES (MOBY REMIX) [...]

When we last checked in with Rat Columns they had just released their debut 73 single and were (mostly) a one man band. The band, now officially a three piece, have just unfurled their first long player Sceptre Hole . The band is now based in San Francisco, though guitarist/singer David West began Rat Columns in Perth, Australia. Geography seems to be irrelevant though, because Rat Columns do not not sound like they adhere to any scene or current musical trend in that city or any other. Eastern Vibrations starts the record off [...]

Do you know where you were exactly four years ago? I do. I was sitting on my couch in Buenos Aires, writing my very first "THEME FOR GREAT CITIES" blog post. Title: "I'm Not Dead!" Subject: The Young and the Restless star Jeanne Cooper, who had just won her very first Daytime Emmy Award -- Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series -- for her role as Katherine Chancellor. (How fitting is it that tonight, June 23, the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be presented [...]
