Many '70s rock enthusiasts might remember a Canadian band known as Simply Saucer. As a hybrid of proto-punk and psychedelia, the band enjoyed minor success; however, the group broke apart for many years until finally reforming over four years ago. However, the time off did not deter Simply Saucer front-man, Edgar Breau, from writing and recording new material. In February, Breau will release Patches of Blue through Flying Inn Recordings, an album that Breau has been building towards since the first Simply Saucer break up in 1979. Above is the video for the title [...]

There I was, all set to blog about Top Chef last night and how Lorraine Bracco has massive cans, which made me miss the love of my life Gail Simmons even more than having Anthony Bourdain there instead of Gail. Oh Gail, I miss your fucking rack so much. Please return to my television set next week. I need some new masturbation fodder! There I was, all set to blog about Top Chef last night, and then someone else on Facebook mentioned how sad they were that the White Stripes have called [...]

Myspace Toronto's venerable Wavelength might have closed out their weekly showcase series last year in favour of intermittent events throughout the year, but they've not given up their tradition of throwing a killer birthday party or five. As they've done in years past, Wavelength Eleven (or event #415 if you're keeping track) will commandeer venues around this city from February 16 through 20 and fill them with many of the finest acts the city and outlying regions have to offer, spanning all styles and genres, frequently on the same bill. [...]
A new week is beginning. I think it's going to be a good one. I think . I haven't quite figured out why yet, but for at least one of you reading this, it will be a good week. I should try my hand at horoscopes. Hey Aries, you're going to shit your pants this week. Pisces, you will find yourself drunk at least once. Uh oh, Leo…you have cancer. Poor Leo. You were always so innocent and free. You were always so…cancer free. Hey, look, I made a rhyme. There, that should suffice as an introductory [...]
We dig people that celebrate Halloween year-round. You know these people. Goths. Cosplayers. Lady Gaga. People of Wal-Mart. So Halloween was yesterday. SO WHAT. Put your costume back on, hop into the wayback machine, and set a course for 1974 Hamilton, Ontario. Yes, Canada. And party with the cretin-hopping freaks ...

A car company sponsoring garage rock makes perfect sense, right? Scion seems to think so. In addition to footing the bill for a bunch of free shows in New York this past year, Scion will be staging a day-long Garage Fest for the second year in a row. Like last year's fest in Portland, which included psychedelia legends Roky Erickson and Simply Saucer along side newer acts like Black Lips and The Fresh & Onlys , this year's fest includes a mix of new and old. Reunited stalwarts The Oblivians and [...]
ZACH HILL Sacramento, California Zach Hill [Portrait by Marc Kallweit] I was born and raised in Sacramento , California. I dropped out of school at age 15 and moved out alone to Nevada City, CA, and then San Francisco from there. My father and uncle were press printers so I've spent most of my adolescence in a print shop with long-haired, bearded dudes [...]

Simply Saucer - Cyborgs Revisited Thanks to that Ty Segall single that covered Simply Saucer a couple weeks back we've been revisiting this classic pretty hard over the past couple of days. The Canadian band falls into a great crevice between the sonic experimentation begun by the Beefheart overhang of the 60's, the Theremin invocations of Lothar and the Hand People or even United State of America and the sci-fi power pop of The Twinkeyz. Round these parts that's pretty comfortable company to be in. The record is driving and weird, fractured and [...]

The idea that Earth has been visited by aliens at some point in the distant past is not a new one. In Sumer, the alien Gods were known as the Anunnaki. While in Greece, they are known as Annodoti and in the Celtic lore, the Tuatha de Danaan. Tthe Semetic scriptures (Torah, Talmud, Old Testament, and other Apocryphal texts like the Book of Enoch), call them The Nephilim, The Sons of God, or The Watchers. We are told the gods themselves had their own monarchy, with laws of succession similar to our own, and they built a [...]

Cyborgs Revisited was an album released by Simply Saucer in 1989. The Hamilton, Ontario band lasted from 1973 to 1979 and only ever released one single officially when they were together. "She's A Dog/I Can Change my mind was released in 1978. The bands style was a mix of bands such as Alice Cooper, MC5, The Stooges, Velvet Underground, and Hawkwind. The song "Electro Rock", featured on today's program can be found on the album Cyborgs Revisited . The album was made up of two sides, the first being a demo session that the band [...]

These guys were an early 70s Canadian band, Hamilton to be exact, heavily influenced by Syd's Pink Floyd , The Stooges and The Velvet Underground . Formed in 1972, the first six tracks on the belated album, Cyborgs Revisited , were recorded in 1974 by Bob and Daniel Lanois (fellow Hamiltonians) in their mother's basement. The sessions were aborted when funds ran out. Read more » Original post blogged on b2evolution .

Since it's Halloween week, and I always associate Orson Wells' War of the Worlds broadcast with the holiday, it seemed like a decent time for posting proper on some Simply Saucer . Though their name sounds like an item you might pick up at your nearby intergalactic grocery stop, their astral psychedelic garage transmissions more than make up for poor title decisions (I mean, their quintessential album is titled Cyborgs Revisited ... Ridley Scott, you own them some royalties, dudebro). The influences are obvious - early [...]

What better way to get Q3 off to a slammin' start by posting proper on some Simply Saucer . Though their name sounds like an item you might pick up at the grocery, their interstellar psychedelic garage transmissions more than make up for a poor title decisions (I mean, their quintessential album is titled Cyborgs Revisited ... Ridley Scott, you own them some royalties, dudebro). The influences are obvious - early Floyd, 13th Floor Elevators, the Velvets' "Sister Ray," Delay 68 Can, Electric Prunes, et al., but whereas those groups fine-tuned their sound and still maintained [...]

Quite simply, this is one of the best proto-punk albums out there. Cyborgs Revisted is equal parts Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd garage psych raunch and early Velvet Underground art-rock sophistication, sounding well ahead of the game and almost too good to be true. It's a fabulous record that few people have heard, and will appeal to adventurous listeners who are tired of today's top 40 garbage. Simply Saucer formed in Hamilton, Canada (Ontario), releasing just one single in 1978 and playing live shows throughout the region. I don't think Cyborg's Revisited was officially [...]

I can only imagine what the residents of Hamilton , Ontario made of Simply Saucer back in the mid-70's. Their music, a blend of Velvets stomp with Syd-era Pink Floyd weirdness, still sounds a bit off-putting. Straight forward rock songs quickly shift into Theremin led discordant freak outs. The groove heavy "Dance the Mutation" could have been the most fucked up dance craze ever. "The Twist" for the kids who ate acid instead of cereal for breakfast. While "Instant Pleasure" is a freak beat sex romp sing-along that clocks in at less [...]

When I first heard the 1970s recordings from Here Come the Cyborgs back in 1989 or 90, Simply Saucer instantly struck me as a band that had all the most amazing elements of late 60s/early 70's psych/protopunk. Byron Coley's old Underground column in SPIN touted them as the unknown Canadian equivalent to the Velvets/Pink Fairies and with good reason. They took their name from Pink Floyd and while they employed that band's penchant for extended cosmic jams (complete with SS frontman Edgar Breau clearly taking some song structure cues from Syd Barrett) [...]

Simply Saucer , circa 1978 If there's one show to be recommended this week, it's Simply Saucer , who sound kind of like a jangly 1970s Velvet Underground -era relaxed rock band. And that may or may not be a result of the fact that they actually are one; the band formed in 1973, and are still touring after releasing their latest album, Cyborgs Revisited , back in 2003. They were also once produced by Hull's Daniel Lanois , so ... so nothing, but just thought you'd like to know, [...]
