Well, covering old classics has always been something that bands like to to. No matter if young bands cover the songs by their idols or well-known bands do covers for other reasons. In fact, covers don't have to be good. Often they are not at all, since they seem like cheap versions of great songs. John Grant doesn’t come across as the type of person to sit on the fence; he is what he is and things are how they are. But his music is so painfully honest and intermittently hilarious, or maybe that is painfully hilarious and intermittently honest, that you could be forgiven for thinking that he hadn’t really made his mind up (just look at the videos for ‘GMF’ or ' Chicken Bones ' and try not to smile through the pain). Has he really made his mind up about the mysterious TC, about his love life, about anything, really? His lyrics [...]

One of the most unexpected developments of the year in pop so far must be the fact that PSY won't go down in history as a one-hit wonder. No performer of a recent viral hit this side of Baauer's "Harlem Shake" seemed as destined to never again scale the heights of Billboard's Hot 100 as the man behind the abominable "Gangnam Style" (the song and the dance). Then something shocking happened on his way to the cut-out bin: PSY scored another hit. Alas, "Gentleman," the slightly superior follow-up to "Gangnam Style" that sounds like [...]
So, tonight is the grand induction ceremony for this year's class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. You'll forgive us if we don't get too excited, though, as the whole Hall of Fame experience these days is as notable for who isn't included as it is for who is — and, specifically, for the ongoing lack of female inductees. There are plenty of worthy male artists and (predominantly) male bands whose continuing absence is inexplicable — Brian Eno, Nick Drake, Pixies, The Smiths, The Cure, Television — but the picture for women remains truly depressing. About this time two years [...]
The National Concert Hall have announced the line-up for their Summer Festival. Taking place over several dates this July and August, the festival will boast performances from the likes of Bryan Ferry , Spiritualized and Sinead O'Connor . O'Connor is just one of many Irish acts that have been announced, and the full [...]
A few weeks ago I was asked to submit my top 13 tracks from Irish singer-songwriters since 2000 which was submitted to IASCA to be included in a package of music for BBC Radio 6 to potentially be played during their St. Patrick's Day shows. On 6 Music, presenters Cerys Matthews, (10-12noon), Huey Morgan (1-4pm) and Tom Robinson in Now Playing @ 6 Music (6-8pm) will each be selecting a few Irish artists to play during their shows. The station will also replay their Sinead O’Connor First Time special (12-1pm). Hopefully some of the [...]

Filed under: News , Holy Hell , News Today, Oh Boy! NBC The surprising news of Pope Benedict XVI 's resignation effective at the end of this month has at least one fan: Sinead O'Connor . The singer posted a short note on the Pontiff's decision on her site today approving the move. "I would like to congratulate Pope Benedict on his wise decision to retire before [...]

Only 30 more weeks till any semblance of football. To fill that void, my attention will be directed to my Denver Nuggets and the NBA. The All-Star Break is around the corner and the Nuggets are heating up with an eight game win streak all behind fundamentals: defense, fast break points and points in the paint. Their deep bench will prove that they're more than a one and done team in the playoffs. The trade behind Nene to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Javale Mcgee is yielding large dividends. The mastermind trade behind general manager Masai [...]

Getty Images Sinead O'Connor revealed in an interview that she and the artist formerly and presently) known as Prince have an unpleasant history -- while she didn't go into detail, she says she and the "Purple Rain" singer once got into a heated violent encounter. O'Connor also claims to have, at one point, "chased Roger Waters to beat the [...]
Gordon's picked up a story from this month's Uncut, in which Sinead O'Connor reveals that Noel Gallagher asked for her hand in marriage . That does oversell it a little bit: “Noel once asked me to marry him, just before he married MEG MATHEWS. “He won’t remember as he was off his face at a festival in Amsterdam.” So this was a marriage proposal with all the veracity of being told that you're somebody's best mate, then, rather than a striking incident in an unexpected romance. Even so, it's a pity [...]

It's been somewhat longer than seven hours and fifteen days since Sinead O' Connor ascended to international stardom with the Prince-penned mega-hit 'Nothing Compares 2 U'. Since then, her musical career has been mostly overshadowed by off-stage controversies, most notably her idiosyncratic and forthright stance on Catholicism, epitomised by an infamous SNL performance where she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II live on air. Given this well-charted animus towards organised religion, it might therefore seem odd that she chose a church (albeit one long deconsecrated) to perform her most recent album [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , The Hit List Getty | Getty | Getty There are more than a few musicians who had a plan B. Or more specifically, there are more than a few musicians who abandoned bona fide careers for a chance in the limelight. (And vice versa.) That's why we went on a research binge. We wanted to know if Rick Ross wasn't the only [...]

It’s time again for Friday on My Mind , our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around one common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. For this week, we are looking at some of the most Memorable Musical Performances given on Saturday Night Live . In 1974, Canadian producer and comedy writer Lorne Michaels was asked by NBC to create a new show to fill in an open Saturday night show slot which had previously been running reruns of The Tonight [...]
