Ah, the summer of '95! To quote Bryan Adams, those, quite possibly, were the best days of my life. (And if my friend and then-No. 1 wingman Dave is reading this, he'll no doubt agree.) I was working at People magazine, living in New York City's East Village, and spending Friday nights at Sound Factory Bar and Saturday nights at the Roxy and Sound Factory, the legendary after-hours club in Chelsea. That's where I'd dance the night (and morning) away, flirting with beautiful strangers under the strobelights to a soundtrack dominated by [...]

As we've recently mentioned on previous posts here on The Recommender, Brighton is definitely enjoying something of a buzz spotlight as a multitude of exceptional bands have appeared from this city throughout 2011. Today we bring you the next in line for our attention, a new duo called Curxes (pronounced Curses). The thing is, whilst we are more than happy to claim them as our own, it's thrown up a debate about what constitutes the linking of a city with a band. Is the issue of a band's geography even relevant? Perhaps not in [...]
Today Siouxsie Sioux, born Susan Janet Ballion, turns 54 years old. Sioux is one of the undisputed originators of the post-punk and goth genres. Whether you're talking about her work with the Ban... Continue reading "Happy Birthday Siouxsie Sioux: Eight Of Her Best Songs" >

If you've yet to hear of Painted Face, you're not alone, but all that is about to change. With her incredible vocals mixed with vibrant music, it won't be long until everyone will fall in love with Allie aka Painted Face. Having played in previous bands, one of them later being Telepathe, she's now embarking [...]

Oftentimes when we think of the music that comes out of Sweden and makes its way to our shores, it's generally sugary and sweet pop music that is both enjoyable yet ultimately disposable. I'd like to introduce you to a band that presents something a little bit different. This is Baron Bane and they would like to lull you in an altered state of consciousness with their new single Orchids . As beautiful as this song, it's the Siouxsie-esque vocals of singer Ida Long, that give me shivers. The single is out today via Stupid Dream Records so I [...]
There's been something of a recent revolution regarding female pop musicians the past few years. I think Lady Gaga has quite a bit to do with it, as her off-the-wall corporal decor has made her middling pop anthems all the more entertaining. Her bizarro, anything-goes MO has even provoked well-worn label queens like Beyoncé and Xtina to rethink their own yawn-inducing images, even if those maneuvers reeked of predictable copycat recycling. And while Gaga and her pro-gay, not-totally-lame dance music ethos is intriguing-especially considering all the shock-and-awe videos -it's still nail-bitingly mainstream. Fortunately, [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Marina and the Diamonds made their sparkling Los Angeles debut on Tuesday night before an adoring sold-out crowd at the Troubadour -- but the Welsh singer admitted she was a bit on edge before taking the stage. "This one gig out of the 180 I'm doing this year made me [nervous]," she said a few songs in to her hour-long set of New Wave-influenced pop. "But you're really lovely."
Watching, listening, feeling, breathing. Zola Jesus is Nika Roza Danilova of Wisconsin. Not a very typical Wisconsin name, but then nothing about her is typical at all. On first listen, I'm feeling PJ Harvey, I'm seeing Siouxsie Sioux, I'm understanding Lydia Lunch. I'm feeling Joy Division in tracks like Smirenye from Turnstile Music 's Bento #2. Haunting, lo-fi, gothic, ambient, slow-pop. Nika's opera-trained vocals marry the sounds and the beats in perfect harmony. Now Souterrain Transmissions have given this track for your preview pleasure from her latest offering [...]

Living Days From: New York, United States Living Days is a new romantic pop group (don't groan there's not a Leigh Boweryesque costume to be seen) from Brooklyn, NY. The five love terrorists, who include former members of Matisyahu , CocoRosie , Lee Scratch Perry , and sci fi thrash band AQUI , are a punk disco ball of new wave fury [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News As a courtesy to its nature-deprived New York City patrons, the music venue Brooklyn Bowl often devotes its video screens to nature films. It's a nice touch: While you sink beers, bowl or just wait for shows to begin, you can watch baby polar bear pad through the snow and cuddle with their mamas. If you're onstage, of course, the footage can be a little distracting. That may have been the case Thursday night, as the British dance-rock quartet Deluka [...]

Dirtblonde From: Liverpool, United Kingdom What do you get the Devil who has everything? Well Woon, Filthy Little Angels and fellow scousers Dirtblonde have sent the Devil the best birthday present a fallen angel could wish for. A killer combination of two of the best things to ever to emerge from the FLA stable. A Dirtblonde cover of Colt.45's brilliant Stockholm Syndrome . All wrapped up in a free EP from the FLA [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Metric made the most of their opening slot for Muse on Friday night at Stubb's Bar-B-Q, churning out a set of mostly synth pop that showcased frontwoman Emily Haines ' love for dancing and all-around stage versatility. The set drew heavily from 2009's 'Fantasies,' with Haines wasting no time in conjuring up the hammer imagery of 'Help I'm Alive,' pumping her fist during the song's infectious line "Beating like a hammer." But it was when the band briefly paused [...]
We all remember the '80s right? Big hair, shit clothes, big mobile phones and a smattering of amazing music (and some drivel). Everyone kind of hated it at the time. Well, as you are aware, we're forgiving the '80s in a big way by using its style and nabbing bits of the music that weren't awful. On the surface Nottingham-born Ronika is another young woman whose spent too much time rooting through the '80s NOW compilations, but there's something much more genuine about her sound and also, weirdly, the way she looks. It's as if Cyndi Lauper [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Say what you will about 30-something ' Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass' author Lewis Carroll's relationship with his prepubescent muse, Alice Liddell -- you can't deny it made for great art. And in the 140 years since, Carroll's proto-surrealist work has also inspired hundreds of other artists -- from Salvador Dalí and James Joyce to the Care Bears . With the Tim Burton -directed ' Alice in Wonderland ' movie upon us, we've donned our Mad Hatter [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Clearly excited to be playing its third-ever New York City gig and first as a headliner, Welsh trio the Joy Formidable opted for a grand finale Monday night at Brooklyn's Union Hall. From the back of the sold-out club, it was impossible to see what, exactly, the flailing, doubled-over musicians did to their instruments, but through some combination of effects and abuse, they summoned from their guitars waves of howling feedback. It was a dramatic end to what had been a thrilling 40 [...]
Siouxsie is unhappy with the way women are treated by what's left of the music industry : Speaking at the launch of her live DVD, Finale, the iconic singer told 6 Music: "There are some strong female performers but the industry's pre-occupation with the packaging of how a woman looks has gone completely the other way, back to almost the 60s, early 70s. "I like a bit of eye candy like anyone but to have it solely about the eye candy and have it fall into a category so rigidly as well is wrong." [...]
