When one who hates winter and all its trappings awakens at 5 am to mounds of snow on the ground, it's gonna be a bad time. Unless, of course, the first thing one finds after gazing out upon all that white powder is a previously unreleased jam from a favorite band. Has Snowy Tuesday been saved?! Siskiyou is now on Bandcamp, their full discography up for grabs at that one url. Even better, they're giving away their cover of Lee Hazelwood's "We All Make The Flowers Grow" and of course, it's a beauty. Thanks to the [...]

Only ATPers would arguably opt to fester in darkened rooms listening to largely incessant doom during enduring heatwave. However the way in which the festival has come to represent a safe haven of sorts, concealed from the perils of the wider world and the mainstreams which amble through it makes the way in which the mercifully well air-conditioned West Hall figuratively seems quite so far removed from the wildly stifling climes outside appear exceedingly germane. It's the sort of atmosphere in which creative freedom may be birthed without deformation; in which a sense of liberty and self-expression are greeted with [...]

Siskiyou - Never Ever Ever Ever Again
I started writing this piece by proposing a hypothesis which essentially said that bands like O'Death and Siskiyou—really cool bands that made really weird folk records in 2011—were unconsciously responding to the least-folky yet most popular folk artist of 2011, Justin Vernon/Bon Iver. While I'm still fairly satisfied with that idea, I don't care for [...]

So, as the New Year approaches, here are our favourite albums of 2011 for your consideration. Feel free to dispute, argue, or otherwise put us right because, if nothing else, music is as about as subjective topic as it is possible to get. Some of these may not be the "best" albums of the year as far as the critics are concerned, but that matters not, as they were the ones we enjoyed listening to most - give them a try, you might feel the same. 50 Jessica Lea Mayfield [...]

So, the penultimate entry before Mrs Mackerel finishes off this year's set of Top Ten postings tomorrow is my very own. Without further ado... 10. Milk Music - Beyond Living Although it was released early in the year, I only discovered it recently. A full on, no holds barred, nihilistic 70s punk attitude and the very best of the heavyweight riffs of the grunge era is a mighty powerful combination. One that makes me wish my car stereo went all the way up to eleven. Download Milk Music - Beyond [...]

The second part of Given and Taken in Ink's autumn mix is now up on 8tracks: Every time I make a new list, I think it's the best one I've ever done. Sometimes that's actually true. This just may be one of those times. There's the pure pop joy (no pun intended) of "Murderous Joy," the quirky brilliance of Siskiyou, and the weary rasp of Dan Mangan. I love the tranquility of "State / Meant" juxtaposed with the anxiously dreamlike "Curfews." "Ghost Towns" and "My Friends" are highlights of two masterful albums. And I [...]

Just some recent songs I took a bit of a fancy to. Siskiyou travels to Bonnie Billy country, Haroula Rose does the folky duet thing very well, and High On Stress sure digs the Mats a lot. Widowspeak dreams back to the indie eighties, Wounded Lion plays barbwire pop with a delightful chorus (" LVXLCDM " anyone?), while Centro-matic fondly remembers the Mary Chain. Broaden that musical horizon why don't you, pop kids. Siskiyou - Dear Old Friends Haroula Rose - Free To Be Me [...]

As the days and nights get colder, and we enter full-fledged winter, it becomes more and more difficult to justify taking the BMW out. In the cold, it's almost better to just walk. But I braved the chill and barely-working defrost on December 2, taking the car out for one last night show before the new year. It would be a good one, filled with dreamy music pretty much throughout. Here's the playlist. No follow-up coverage today, as I'm saving them for later this week; it'll probably be another [...]

Despite the end of the year fast approaching, thankfully the quality of new music shows no signs of slowing. Here are the best of our November offerings, together with some tasty new tracks to round off the mix.Over thirty great songs - just right for the roaring fire and the cocoa! Blackout Beach - Deserter's Song I've been saying the Jesus Prayer lately. I picked it up from Mitchell, a character in Jeffrey Eugenides' novel The Marriage Plot, who got it from Franny, a character imagined up by J.D. Salinger, who nicked it from The Way of the Pilgrim. It goes: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner. Like everything passed down through centuries of jumbled church doctrine, it's somewhat obscured. The original reads: Lord Jesus Christ, Son [...]

Siskiyou's new album Keep Away The Dead is an unsettling one. The vocals of Colin Huebert are probably the antithesis of what should be considered good and proper - the epitome of wavering, or quavering perhaps - and yet they work beautifully on this collection. The music itself is a restless blend of country rock, folk, and grander orchestral rock and like a musical butterfly, the album touches on all in turn but barely stays long enough to create a sense of belonging before moving on again to touch down somewhere else. Don't be fooled though [...]
