Despite having been absent from the public eye for much of the last several years, Lauryn Hill is still a musical treasure of our generation. Her effortless command of the mic is unique and exceptional. On the Fugee's tracks, there was no question of who the standout was. Lauryn dominated. Her raw talent made her a star; which cannot be said for most of today's "stars". I dig her sound tremendously and for that reason I deliver to you these jammers. Enjoy. So Much for Doo Wop - Lauryn Hill vs Gramatik - The [...]

My parents brought back a few CD's from their trip to Jamaica, and the one that I liked the most was the one with "Golden Hits" scribbled on it's face. Only one problem: no track names. I know a few of the songs, but lets make it a little fun. See if you can figure out the song titles and artist, mostly just by your own knowledge and ear for good music. Try not to cheat!! Who knows, maybe we'll even send you some iLS stickers.... Enjoy: Track 01 [...]

Sleazy McQueen is one of those rare artists you stumble across and don't want to tell anyone about (but for some reason you run a narcissistic blog that you've named after yourself ... and you feel compelled to shout about it). Sleazy McQueen's disco edits, often popping up on the superb Whiskey Disco imprint, aren't just your run-of-the-mill edits (a sprinkling of hollow percussion here, a faint kick drum there...). No, the difference is they're unique, inventive and a lot of fun. Sleazy McQueen whacks a whopping great big beat, chugging and old school, [...]

My favorite track off Idiot Glee's new album Paddywhack premiered yesterday on You Ain't No Picasso —"Trouble At The Dancehall." According to Matt's post , the track was written around a loop of Sandy Nelson's instrumental surf rock-ish song "Teen Beat." Perhaps I read too much into the word "dancehall," but when I previously listened to the Idiot Glee track I envisioned a young white guy doing his take on Jamaican dancehall music, especially that syncopated beat and "Wanna be with you girl" line. I guess that just goes to prove how subjective the [...]

Lugu 1982. aasta albumilt One Two. Sister Nancy aka Muma Nancy aka Ophlin Russell-Myers, maailma esimene naissoost dancehall-DJ ja lisaks sellele muidugi võimas lauljanna. Bam Bam ongi tema kõige tuntum lugu, eks uuri ise edasi või oota, kuni kunagi jälle mõne nancy-looni jõuan. Brothers and sisters, goodnight, hope you're feelin' alright... Sister Nancy - Bam Bam ( mp3 )

Balagan is a very hot and fun track by New York's elusive DJ Turk Disco . The tune makes frustratingly good use of obnoxious horn music that I usually find more than annoying. I searched Google and Yahoo to see if I could find some information on this producer and found absolutely nothing of use other than his myspace account and a second track by the mysterious Turk. This remix of the 1982 dancehall classic by Sister Nancy is also quite cool with it's Baltimore-style breaks structure and tight samples. Both [...]

It's time to ride the riddim on this blazing August Sunday, and who better to do it with than the queen of the dancehall, Sister Nancy . The first female dancehall DJ/MC, Sister Nancy pioneered the dancehall reggae genre for women. I really love this DJ Turk disco mix - I've had it sitting waiting to go up for a while, but I know pretty much nothing about it. So like .... Which DJ Turk is this? Googling around led me to a bunch of websites that don't exist anymore. If you [...]
Top 3 reasons to go out tonight (after watching "Paul McCartney: In Performance at the White House" on KCET at 8): ☛ Laura Marling , the U.K. folk singer who's nominated for a Mercury Music Prize for her sterling sophomore album "I Speak Because I Can," plays the El Rey Theatre. That's her video for "Rambling Man," above. ☛ It'll be formidable back catalog vs. good new album at the Gibson Amphipheatre, where Squeeze play behind their new release "Spot the Difference." Old-school fans seem to always want the hits, y'know? [...]

My niece's reaction to David Bowie got me thinking about musical variety. Kids haven't been programmed to think that weird music is weird yet. In the hopes of coaxing her away from the insipid oldies music that my mom makes her listen to, I wanted to craft a mixtape that would introduce my niece to stuff that I liked when I was younger.
