When EAR FARM considered our impending move and relaunch at the end of 2007, we decided to switch from a scrolling blog format to a more magazine-y layout that would allow for us to highlight a "cover star"/ Band of the Week each week. In doing so we have featured 43 bands over the course of 2008, ranging from the lo-fi jangly noise pop of Throw Me The Statue to the blistering thrash of Goes Cube . We've had relative unknowns (such as The Laughing and Bombadil ), interviews with indie-rock legends (see [...]

above: EAR FARM's CMJ Music Marathon 2008 slideshow If a comparison needs to be made between Austin's South by Southwest and New York's CMJ Music Marathon , let it begin and end with the simple fact that SXSW is the far superior music festival/conference experience. All of Austin shuts down and welcomes the yearly Spring extravaganza, most New Yorkers don't even know what "a CMJ" is... and rightfully so. The trade show portion of the festival looked like a sparsely populated small-town high school career day; the majority of the bands playing this [...]

Here we've got selects from our very own show yesterday at Pianos . It was a great time, thanks to all of the bands and people who came out to the show and made it so awesome. above: [...]

Band: Sister Suvi From: “Montoronto,” Canada Sound: Plucked, strummed and assaulted strings, Medieval vocal rounds stamped with barbershop harmonies and the sludge of 70s glam howls, all cauterized into beautifully meandering sonic roadmaps. Similar Artists: Oneida, Deerhoof, Bombadil, Pixies, Can Listen Now: “Lightning Train” Suggestion for an interactive exercise: go ahead and google “Montoronto” and tell us what bountiful treasures the search spiders dig up. It’s pretty much Sister Suvi, Sister Suvi, and…Sister Suvi [...]

I've been listening to Sister Suvi 's debut EP for the last few hours, and I have to admit that I'm completely stumped as to how to describe them. They share a member with Islands, but unless that band's forthcoming LP takes a drastic left turn that's about all the two bands have in common. They recorded part of the EP at Jace Lasek's Breakglass Studios, but they have virtually nothing in common with bands like The Besnard Lakes, Young Galaxy or The Golden Hands Before God (all of whom -- for me at least -- give that studio [...]
CMJ is upon us (well, it starts tomorrow, but same difference) and as I've been going through the band list looking for new bands the past week or two, I've come up with a few who I think have a lot of potential. Now, besides the obvious bands of Cut Off Your Hands and The Black Ghosts from HSB's IAMSOUND Records (ha), below are some of the bands that I enjoyed and will keeping an eye/ear on. I don't feel like writing a blurb for each so just listen and see what you like. This is [...]
This week there are a ton of fantastic shows hitting town. Sure, a whole bunch of them are sold out; including the final shows at CBGB's, but there's more than that to go see. Here's my picks for the week... Monday: This evening we all get the chance to check out a band that has released on of my favorite albums of 2006! Islands really hit the scene running this year picking up right where Unicorns left off. Tonight they hit Bowery Ballroom at 8pm, tomorrow their at Northsix. Tickets for this show are [...]
