Key Studio Video Session: Sisters 3 from WXPN FM on Vimeo . For our inaugural Key Studio Video Session, we profiled longtime XPN favorites Sisters 3 . The Sadler siblings—Annachristie, Beatrice and Cassandra—are known largely for their collaborative work among the Philadelphia folk community, backing up Hoots And Hellmouth, Hezekiah Jones, and more with their three-part harmonies. But their second full-length album, Coruscate At The Meadow Gate , showcases a range stretching from driving indie-rock to pure pop. Above, you can stream the video; below, download the full performance, recorded with the [...]

Earlier this week, the country/folk trio Sisters 3 dropped by the XPN studios to record a Key Studio Session . In addition to the audio, we were able to shoot a few photos and videos of the session. As a preview, you can check out the photos below; the audio and video will be posted in a few weeks. [...]
From the folks at The Fire : In an attempt to fill the void left by festivals past, and offer a good alternative to flocking to the shore, many of Philadelphia's finest local musicians will participate in the Inaugural Sundrop Music and Arts Festival. The festival includes three great nights of music at the Fire, and an all-day, two stage show and craft fair on Saturday May 28th. Stages will be located at Trios Tratorria and outside of the Fire, with vendors offering fine art, crafts, and food lining the path between the Trios Stage [...]

Nat Baldwin FRIDAY, MAY 6 Right now, it's cool for bands to dabble in basketball, but Nat Baldwin doesn't dabble in it. He turned down a basketball scholarship to study music, and his last record, Most Valuable Player , featured a picture of his MVP trophy from a junior-high-school basketball tournament. Baldwin is most well-known as the bassist for The Dirty Projectors, but he's been putting [...]

Today at Miner Street Recordings in Fishtown, Hezekiah Jones is recording a new song for Shaking Through , WXPN and Weathervane Music's online audio and video initiative. Brian McTear, Executive Director of Weathervane and the owner of Miner Street, is producing the session. Each session is curated, and Hezekiah was my selection for the episode that will run in April. Raphael Cutrufello—he's "Hezekiah"—has assembled a five-piece band (including Andrew Lipke and Sisters 3 ) to perform a new song, "Borrowed Heart." The song is part of a forthcoming [...]

Photo by Doug Seymour Andrew Lipke performs 11/2 at The Fire Love Andrew Lipke 's "Mindgames," but want to know how the rocking anthem would sound after being given the whimsical treatment by Hezekiah Jones ' Raphael Cutrufello? Curious to hear how Suzie Brown 's yearning vocals can completely change the tone of Ryan Tennis ' road-weary "To The Moon?" Who eventually covers what is anybody's guess, but one thing is for certain: the month-long, five-performance "Philly Sings Philly" series at The Fire features just about every acoustic-guitar-wielding [...]

I usually stay away from show-going on Sunday nights so I can be well rested for the looming possibility of a manic Monday. But when I heard Hezekiah Jones and Sisters 3 were playing The Fire (Philadelphia, PA) my live music addiction kicked in and my need for rest was a passing thought. Sisters 3 performed a very lovely set Sunday night opening with an acapella tune that showcased the flawless harmonies and how well Cassandra, Annachristie, and Beatrice voices accompany each other. So, take [...]
Today we received a just completed song from the Miniature Tigers that was produced by the indie electro-pop artist Neon Indian. The song, titled, "Gold Skull", is an advance single from the upcoming new album by the band, which (aside from the Neon Indian produced song) was produced by The Morning Benders' member Chris Chu. Sometimes, a little DIY ethic can go a long way. In this case, it went as far to bring over 20 folk music acts from across the USA for a two day, all night long festival of music, bonfires, camping, and debauchery. Conceptualized by Philadelphia's own Hezekiah Jones ( Raphael Cutrufello ) , and organized with the help of many in the Philadelphia music community, Miles & Maggie Fest was an astounding success. Considering the true DIY ethic involved in putting it all together, the attendance and talent line up rivaled that of some more well known and [...]

DeVotchka (Photo From Band's Myspace) All the holidays are long over, the madness that was DC earlier this week has passed and I have finally situated myself into a new apartment and secured an internet connection. Now I can get you the low down on what to check out this weekend in the IA area. Not much on the multi-stop front. Most already played elsewhere earlier this week or are coming soon to your town. That said, there are plenty of shows worth seeing. Friday [...]

The minute I walked in the door for Sisters3 CD release party I knew that this was going to be one of the best, most fun shows I'd ever have the pleasure of attending. Immediately upon getting my hand stamped, performer Paco Fish asked me if I'd like a party hat - I chose orange [...]

I first came across Philadelphia trio Sisters3 this past Valentine's Day when they performed a show rife with local talent at Northern Liberties' Fire Bar and Grille, most commonly referred to as The Fire. I was there that night to see songstress Birdie Busch perform but was glad to have arrived early once I'd heard [...]
