What thoughts flutter through your head when you hear "supergroup"? I would imagine it's not similar to what goes through my mind: The Highway Men , The Super Friends , "We Are The World" ... I digress. 2012 has graced us with yet another supergroup that may not be as influential as Johnny Cash plucking along side Willy Nelson, but when you mix members of Deer Tick , The Black Lips , Los Lobos , Dead Confederate , and Six Finger Satellite , you got yo' self a SUPERGroup. Diamond [...]

With Beavis and Butthead back on the air after nearly a decade-and-a-half hiatus, I thought I'd take a moment to offer my belated thanks to these two badly-drawn boys for turning me on to a couple of bands that otherwise would have escaped my attention. Even before MTV got out of the music video business, Beavis and Butthead were airing videos that would never have gotten any airplay via mainstream channels. Presumably channeling Mike Judge's musical tastes, Beavis and Butthead provided US viewers with the first glimpses of several well-below-the-radar bands including the Dead Milkmen, the Cramps, Daisy [...]
John McCauley has already had quite the busy 2011, having toured and released albums with both the indie-roots super-group Middle Brother and with his longtime band Deer Tick. The singer-songwriter's latest project sees him teaming up for with Robbie Crowell (Deer Tick), Ian Saint Pé (The Black Lips), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Hardy Morris (Dead Confederate) and Bryan Dufresne (Six Finger Satellite) for another unique "super group" they've dubbed Diamond Rugs . The band will release their debut album next Spring via Partisan Records, and this past week gave a sneak preview of what's to come by [...]

Thanksgiving Day Massacre MP3 by The Chinese Stars You dig prog and are anti-holiday then you will love "Thanksgiving Day Massacre" by The Chinese Stars from their 2009 release Heaven on Speed Dial from Anchor Brain label. Think Deerhunter but with more screwed up vocals. A perfect track for to screw people up in your holiday music mix. Features Craig Kureck and Eric Paul formerly of Arab on Radar in this noise unit + another from Six Finger Satellite make up this bastard rock. Chances are if any of these guys were invited [...]

• As it turns out, the scam I attempted to expose last week was not, in fact, a scam. I received a rather handsome payment today by the advertisers I had been e-mailing last week, and can now go out and drink again without feeling like I'm wasting entire paychecks at a time. It's not technically a donation so there won't be a "Getting Drunk On Your Donations" post recounting my blacking out across Los Angeles. Still, I'm amazed that even after reading the entire e-mail chain I published last week the company was committed to buying advertising space on [...]

I got to see Chrome last night at The Redwood downtown. Well, I saw Helios Creed playing Chrome songs...Damon died like fifteen years ago and I'm pretty sure the other guys were hired guns: Aleph on drums, Lux on bass, and the keyboard player who I see all over town who kind of looks like Eddie Izzard. I'm going to go ahead an say it was Chrome. Maybe you fuckers who saw the band in its early incarnation can really say you saw Chrome, but going to shows is a lot like playing baseball. What? Yeah, I said [...]

duchess says - "black flag" (stream-only) I wasn't familiar with Montreal's Duchess Says until recently. I heard this song for the first time on Tobacco 's ( Anticon / Black Moth Super Rainbow ) Halloween podcast Orgy Drills 1 . This whole record is pretty great. All over the place moog-punk, sometimes melodic, sometimes abrasive. They have a great cover of the Six Finger Satellite song I posted a little while ago (" Rabies (Baby's Got The)"). Great stuff. Check it [...]
I'm gearing up to see Devo on Friday and have been revisiting the classic era of synth-punk, a genre the band had very much to do with pioneering during their earlier years. The genre combines the intense, guitar-driven fury of punk rock with often sloppy and simplistic synth mashing. Though the instrumentation may be the same, synth-punk has little in common with new wave, the fluffier, more pop-driven counterpart. Synth-punk was often gritty, poorly recorded, nasty, and powerful as sin. With that in mind, let's touch upon a few genre classics, both new and old. [...]

six finger satellite - "rabies (baby's got the) (download) This record ( Severe Exposure ) came out when I was a junior in high school (about 14 years ago now). This blew my mind when I first heard it, and it still continues to blow my mind. It's one of the few CD's I still have from back in those days, and I always listen to it at least once a year. Really great fuzzy moog electronic rock. Sometimes grating, sometimes catchy, sometimes instrumental. Guitarist John MacLean [...]

Juan Maclean , frontman to his contemporary self titled project was initially part of the dance-punk group Six Finger Satellite that emerged in 1990. The Providence, Rhode Island band captured a significant following and are still recognized today for their prophetic fusion of electronic and post-punk music. It disbanded in 2001 after lasting 11 years. During their run, James Murphy, an impressive and established sound engineer signed onto the project to assist SFS in sound management while on tour. This was the beginning of an epic relationship. When the project broke up, MacLean focused on a [...]

Vue, way back when Bellavista Temptation By Your Side Tom Verlaine Souvenir From a Dream Bellavista has a very storied pedigree, and if you're at all curious about the group, it's probably because of that pedigree - which is to say that this band, probably because of the capricious nature o' the music industry, isn't as high-profile [...]

[ Everybody's talkin' at me. But I don't hear a word they're sayin'. They're trying to tell me the Record Store is Dead , but I know they're just playin'. With that in mind I present another new Gumshoe Series: Record Store Trip. This is an ongoing chronicle of my flights of fancy at record stores in Chicago, New York, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Florida and more. And yes, that'll be credit, please!] My record-store trip today -- to Twist & Shout in Denver -- was especially successful because [...]
