This is a less than stellar week of new releases compared to a few we have had this year, but if you're heading to the record store here are a few albums we recommend picking up. If we've missed anything don't hesitate to let us know. Albums and MP3's after the jump...

It's been several months since we've done a Forkast update. There are two main reasons for this. The first is, you know, who cares anyway? You have plenty of stuff to listen to without this. The second reason is that...

I love the creepy, meditative feeling of the song's repeated guitar line, and how Ben Chasny's voice keeps on falling on these weird flat notes. The video itself is like a lot of walking-through-the-desert videos, and I'm 80% sure it was filmed on the salt flats in Nevada (I think). Now many songs can justify the epic gloom of one of these videos, but here it comes off as appropriate, not campy. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars [See post to listen to audio] Six Organs of Admittance: "Shelter From The Ash" [MP3] [...]

Ben Chasny is the primary member of Six Organs Of Admittance, a bucolic psychelic/folk vibed out band who is also a member of Comets On Fire. Chasny's forthcoming Shelter From The Ash is an exquisite album - a collection of pastoral blissed out songs due on November 20th on Drag City. It's sort of like if John Fahey or Leo Kottke were in the same band with Spacement 3 or Grizzly Bear - all this

Ben Chasny's haunting guitar and harmonies on "Jade Like Wine" are both light and heavy - somehow the instrumentation is sparse yet the mood created sinks...

Admittedly, I guess I sort of missed Ben Chasny's Six Organs Of Admittance bucolic psych-vibes even though I have had some brushes of musical involvement with Comets On Fire , the other band he is a member of. But Chasny's forthcoming Shelter From The Ash has caught my attention - and should yours as well - with an exquisite album - a collection of pastoral blissed out songs due on November 20th on Drag City . Another fine platter of hushed fuzz and splintered frets from Ben Chasney's mainstay, Six Organs of Admittance. Still channeling the dark lonesome spirits of some wooded acre, Chasney lays the vibes down heavy on Shelter from the Ash , a release that contrary to the title feels less easy than "shelter" might suggest. Heavy overtones of darkness and, if not fear certainly not calm pervade this album but maybe that's the point, its only a respite from the ongoing struggle and not permanent relief. Gentle strums and plucks give way to fuzzed electrics and atmospherics raging with wind and [...]
I'm trying something new this week. Most of the readers who choose to e-mail me do so to complain about how I do not offer the Sunday Mix Tape as a cohesive downloadable file. Well, today is your lucky day, valued reader -- it's taken me 87 weeks, but your prayers have been answered. As of today, I'm going to start making compressed archives of the compilations available for you. Maybe now you can tell your friends about this website, and we can start to grow together. As friends. And lovers. I hope your weekends were fun and [...]

Last night was so embarrassing I won't even describe how I spent it. Sure, I left the apartment at five in the afternoon and didn't return until after 4am, but the hours in between were so utterly unremarkable I feel it could actually damage my reputation if I recounted the details for you. I awoke to my phone ringing at noon. There were television characters making cameos in my dreams this morning. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or [...]

Photo credit: Elisa Tagliati To complete this trilogy we've now come to the ending of the sleep cycle. In the previous chapter Asleep Eternally there was all the time in world to wrap ourselves in the night's dark and serene setting, but now it's time to start a new day. Currently one of my favourite albums of this year (Sam Baker / Pretty World) features a wonderful song about the moments just before waking up. Before the sun Before the heat Before we untangle from our [...]
. But when, after counting the palm trees, he cast his eyes around him, the most horrible despair was infused into his soul. Before him stretched an ocean without limit. The dark sand of the desert spread further than eye could reach in every direction, and glittered like steel struck with bright light. It might have been a sea of looking-glass, or lakes melted together in a mirror. A fiery vapor carried up in surging waves made a perpetual whirlwind over the quivering land. The sky was lit with an Oriental splendor of insupportable purity, leaving naught for [...]

Showing his dark and fuzzy side, Ben Chasney issues his heaviest incarnation under the Six Organs moniker and splits the fun with a B side from OM. Six Organs of Admittance/ OM - Split 7" "Assyrian Blood" nicely matches all the dark and brooding images that the title brings to mind. A heavy, doom laden track that plows through hell on wheels of fuzz and smoke, reminding you exactly why Chasney has taken up ranks with [...]
In case you have been searching for another reason to mock CNN, here's a public interest story that's sure to help. It seems like every few weeks the media giant produces one of these unintentionally uproarious articles about the Baby Boomer generation, and how they don't have to worry about aging, because they're going to stay young and awesome forever -- not like their parents, who just got old and died. Those between the ages of 43 and 61 can continue believing in the existence of a real-life Peter Pan syndrome, where they don't have to accept reality, [...]

On the 25th of next month Devendra Banhart will supply us with the follow-up to his 2005 freak folk bonanza Cripple Crow . The album, Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon (XL Recordings), will hold 16 tracks and Banhart will be playing a long list of dates surrounding the album's release. Two new songs from Smokey have started to circulate, including a fantastic song called "Seahorse" that clocks in at a full eight minutes. Listen to the changes in this song, specifically at 1:56, and 5:20. Masterful, that's what it [...]
