Mikal Cronen gets romantic with Proclaimers "I'm Gonna Be" and Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me."

Every morning, after I shower and get dressed, I take a moment, just for myself, where I stare into the mirror and wonder, longingly: "Is this the day an up-and-coming American folk artist will finally give Sixpence None the Richer 's seminal 1998 hit "Kiss Me" the cover treatment it deserves?" And at the end of the every day, as I brush my teeth before bed, I have to stare back in that same mirror and come to grips with the fact that no, today was not that day. IT ALL CHANGES NOW. Mikal Cronin , [...]

Mikal Cronin 's latest LP MCII was released on the 7th, and to celebrate he's released two quite charming covers for Aquarium Drunkard 's Lagniappe Sessions: a cover of The Proclaimers ' 'I'm Gonna Be' and Sixpence None The Richer 's 'Kiss Me'. Honestly, I never thought I'd have to get 'Kiss Me' out of my head again but my friends, here we are. Man... Anyway, why don't you listen to the two covers below and Cronin's explanation of how they came to be, as well? [...]
For Aquarium Drunkard's most recent Lagniappe Sessions - a column where they enlist different artists to give away one-off tracks - Mikal Cronin, of Ty Segall band fame and contributor to Adult Swim's garage comp , shares two covers of '90s movie soundtrack radio staples. On ukelele and melodica, Cronin does his own renditions of the Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be" ( Benny And Joon ) and Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me" ( She's All That ). Of the tracks he recorded for an at-the-time long distance girlfriend he says: I recorded these [...]

You may know Mikal Cronin best as one of the players in Ty Segall's live band. He also has a solo music career, and is releasing his new album MCII today via Merge . To celebrate this release he's released two special covers to Aquarium Drunkard . As a part of AD's Lagniappe Session, Cronin has offered up two ukelele covers of two hard to miss pop songs: The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" & Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me." Cronin and his girlfriend both have [...]
There must be something in the air this week, because on the same morning that Glee 's flaccid attempt at Radiohead's "Creep" did the rounds on various music blogs, World of Wonder reposted Barbra Streisand's bewildering cover of David Bowie's "Life on Mars." This double dose of ghastliness got us thinking about the singular hubris of so many covers that purport to "improve" a song by removing exactly what made it special in the first place. The history of music is littered with these boring renditions of great songs, [...]

Perhaps overjoyed by the news of a forthcoming VH1 biopic , Portlandia star Fred Armisen and a slew of notable guests covered TLC's classic "Waterfalls" during his show last night at NYC's Bowery Ballroom. Armisen was joined by Les Savy Fav's Tim Harrington, Marnie Stern, Yo La Tengo’s James McNew, Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, Telekinesis’ Michael Lerner, and Sixpence None the Richer’s Leigh Nash (?!). Together, this rag-tag supergroup kept things straightforward, albeit with noticeable blues-funk undertones. Spoiler: Armisen may very well be the best frontman/band leader in the history of popular music. [...]

Photos by G. Fred Armisen I already loved Fred Armisen prior to seeing him live at his sold out performance at New York's Bowery Ballroom on February 19, 2013; however, now that I've seen his show, I love him a lot more. Performing for over two hours, Fred Armisen presented a multi-media experience that featured videos (including one of Karen Carpenter miming along to an extended drum solo - good find Fred!), as yet unreleased clips from his hit show "Portlandia," bits of stand [...]

Well, another year has come and gone, and it's time to post my favorite albums of the past year. 2012 seemed to lack a lot of depth in terms of quality albums. There are a few great ones at the top of the list, but once you get past the first 6 or 7, the [...]

Since forming in 1993, Sixpence None the Richer released numerous hit singles that were all over the teen television dramas ("Kiss Me," "There She Goes," "Don’t Dream It’s Over" - ring any bells?). The band parted ways in 2004 but have since reuinited and have a new album out entitled "Lost in Transition." The last time they played Richmond they sold out the Flood Zone. Sixpence None The Richer performs at the John Marshall Hotel on Oct. 5. Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me [...]

So, there is a new Sixpence None the Richer album. I have never heard a Sixpence None the Richer album before but was acquainted with their late 90’s super hits “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes”. Still, I had made assumptions about what a SNTR album would sound like and “Lost In Transition” has proven that I was 100% correct. Some might look at me, a curmudgeonly reactionary and hard rock fan, and say “Wow, I wouldn’t expect a guy like you to like SNTR.” You would, of course, be right. I don’t care for them one bit. I didn’t [...]

August starts strong with a great crop of new records. Indie rock faves Antony and the Johnsons put out Cut the World (pictured), but that's really just scratching the surface. Major labels represent this week from some notable names like Pet Shop Boys (who have a new EP) and Rob Zombie . Sixpence None the Richer are back from wherever they've been since "Kiss Me" was popular so many years ago.
