The JD Set Final - April 29th

Sixteen Layers - Exile [Live @ Sugar Club 27-10-2010]
The Final Line-Up is complete! The Village - April 29th. Can you choose a minner from Saccade, Ladydoll, The Croonics, Henrietta Game or Sixteen Layers? Henrietta Game have a wonderful chance. The Croonics could be just a bit quirky to be massively impressive on the night. Sixteen Layers released a brilliant debut and must be one of the favourites. I haven't heard enough of Ladydoll to make much of a judgement. My tip for the win is Saccade due to the quality of their songs and Steve's super [...]

The Indiependence Mixtape

The Indiependence Mixtape This weekend is an immense weekend for Irish music in terms of the future. As we all know we can only have good independent music festivals if they have the ability to make money. Here's hoping all four festivals this weekend breaks even and continues into the future! Le Cheile - Oldcastle, Meath July 31st - Aug 2nd. There's a free gig on the Sunday featuring Funeral Suits and Neosupervital amongst many others that I'm looking forward to. I also got tickets to Heritage Centre and Ian Whitty for [...]

Best of 2009 Mixtape ..... so far!

Best of 2009 Mixtape ..... so far! Following the example of the main two Music blogs based in Ireland here and here I've decided to summarise 2009 with an mp3 mixtape. A big thanks to everyone visiting my little page and for the few comments I been getting. The hit counter seems to be increasing and the comments justify the pleasurable effort I put into the blog so again a big thanks for them! Just a little reminder that I won't be posting anything on this blog until Sunday 12th July. If you can make it to Boyles [...]

Album Review: Sixteen Layers - I Am No One

Album Review: Sixteen Layers - I Am No One 'I Am No One' is a good rock album that deserves the biggest audience possible. Dublin band Sixteen Layers make music that will mean something to people. The lyrics in the main are accomplished and thoughtful. It's not easy to make a record with crashing guitars and booming drumbeats that makes the ear tune in on the vocals and lyrics. The band are good musicians and the vocal harmonies work very well. Standout tracks include 'Into The Sun' , 'Former You' and the title track. 'I Am No One' certainly nods to grunge influences of Pearl Jam and Nirvana while [...]

Sixteen Layers – I Am No One

In 2007, Sixteen Layers won Dublin's Bodog battle of the bands. In 2008 they got a record deal, made a splash with single 'Torch' and worked with Foo Fighter's producer Jim Lowe. In 2009 - a full two years after announcing themselves – the four Dubliners finally rolled out an album. I Am No One is a beautifully produced eleven-track stomp along the line between straight up old-school rock and modern-day anthemic indie. There's even the occasional detour via strained, screeching metal-style vocals, and it's a compelling combo. Niall's voice has a hint of stadium [...]
