Photo by G. Rodriguez and Geoffrey Dicker Sixto Rodriguez is having quite a year. After decades of obscurity, a documentary entitled "Searching for Sugar Man" about the 70s folk singer got released and Rodriguez (as he is better known) is enjoying global success now. The documentary won an Oscar at the Academy Awards and Rodriguez is performing at massive venues across the country! This just goes to show that success can happen at any age. What an inspiration. Great meeting you Rodriguez! Thanks again! [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , The Hit List Getty The documentary " Searching For Sugar Man " received the Oscar for Best Documentary in February. It's about a singer named Rodriguez who was virtually unknown in his home country of the U.S., but was incredibly popular in South Africa and it's only now thanks to the movie's success that North Americans are doubling back and figuring [...]

I happened to download Searching For Sugar Man last night after watching the Oscars this weekend, (if you're reading this go download it somewhere), and man it is definitely an Oscar winning documentary worth watching, I already hear Rodriguez's music in the next award winning Quentin Tarantino flick. Who is Sixto Rodriguez ? Did he set himself on fire at a show, did he shoot himself in the head in order to make the most grotesque rock statement known to man, nope, as exciting and crazy as those stories might be [...]
[ purchase the Soundtrack ] The winner for Best Documentary Feature at Sunday’s intermittently entertaining, but generally overstuffed, politically incorrect and dull Academy Awards broadcast was “Searching for Sugar Man,” a film about the musician Sixto Rodriguez and the his unusual career. Although I haven’t seen the movie yet, I am aware of the story and won’t ruin it for those who want to be surprised. The music was recorded back in the early 1970’s, but most of it holds up today. My wife and I attended the Newport Folk Festival last summer, and [...]

At a young 70-years-old, Sixto Rodriguez is rejuvenated. After releasing two albums in the 70s, the American folk musician didn't make an initial impact in the States, but his music found prominence in South Africa , compounded by a rumor that the musician had committed suicide. And like most rumors, [...]

'Searching For The Sugarman' is the story of Sixto Rodriguez ; the Detroit native recorded a couple of albums in the late 60s/early 70s and then promptly disappeared. His music somehow made it's way to South Africa, were his anti establishment lyrics resonated with many South Africans during the height of apartheid; so much so that he was more popular than Elvis. Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom are the musical detectives in this tale as they wade through the rumours (including one that he set himself on fire on stage) and try and track down Rodriguez. It's [...]
This video gives me goosebumps. Seeing such an awesome, gentle man like Rodriguez finally getting the recognition he deserves is really really great. I had the pleasure of meeting this man a few years ago when he came to visit my place of employment after playing a show at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. After already having been familiar with his Cold Fact LP for a few years, I was extremely nervous to meet him. He was already a celebrity to me. I remember shaking his hand and telling him how much I loved his music, and he [...]

Joe writes: I know this sounds very Nathan Barley-esque but I first heard Sixto Rodriguez when the DJ at the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch played Sugar Man and I Shazamed it. It's a magical record and it turns out it has a magical story behind it which is the theme of the new documentary Sugar Man. Read this for more .
