Trumpeter Johnny "Dizzy" Moore, one of the founding members of the Jamaican ska/reggae outfit the Skatalites, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. Moore, along with saxophonists Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso and trombonist Don Drummond, formed the band in 1964; it broke up a little more than a year later, but its influence spread far and wide. Moore became a fixture of the session-musician scene, appearing on albums by the likes of Bob Marley and Lee "Scratch" Perry, and he also played with the band briefly after it reformed in 1986. He was 70. (The Skatalites' [...]

It is wish hung heads and heavy hearts that we here at the culture of me bring you the news that one of the brightest bulbs in ska and reggae music has gone out. Johnny Moore, fames hornsman for The Skatalites , passed away in a battle with cancer. He was 70 years old and is survived by four children. Over the last three decades, Moore and his bandmates were heavily responsible for changing the shape of Jamaica-inspired bluebeat music. Moore died at a friend's house after being released from the hospital [...]

Back in February, when Fidel Castro resigned the presidency of Cuba, the New York Times ran a nice piece on WFMU after Dave the Spazz feted the event by spinning Jay Chevalier's "Castro Rock" on his radio show. (Click to hear it, below.) Being that today is el Comandante ' s 82nd birthday, please join me, won't you, in belting out a rousing rendition of "¡Feliz Cumpleaños!" Hey, he may actually still be alive! When you're done singing, please take time to enjoy these [...]

Roughly two months ago, Nicole Davis from Brooklyn Based (an essential newsletter focusing on Brooklyn's best food, art, services, shops and people - subscribe HERE ) got in touch and asked me to help create a mix of Brooklyn-based bands. It was a ton of fun and the resulting mix ( HERE ) turned out to be a great listen. Well, guess what..... we're back! Our second EAR FARM/Brooklyn Based collaboration is all about bands playing some of New York City's free outdoor concerts — SummerStage , Prospect [...]
by Bitterboxcar Download: - The Skatalites "Lee Harvey Oswald" [MP3] Download: - The Skatalites "Welcome Back Home" [MP3] Sat outside of a show a long ways back in the town of Santa Barbara and watched one of my many bosses at the time show me how to pick up girls. I hadn't asked him to show me, nor did I really care if was going to anyways. I was shy and truly just [...]

Trojan Records was founded in 1967 by Jamaican-English producer Lee Gopthal as something of a sister label to Chris Blackwell's Island Records. It became one of the best-known and successful reggae labels, but it also bought out several independent Jamaican labels and ended up with a pretty good ska and rock-steady back catalog. In 1972, it went through these archives and put out a fantastic (if somewhat inaccurately-named) compilation, The Trojan Story . Although the liner notes were somewhat sparse and the sound rough, you couldn't want a better overview [...]

CONCERNING THE KAAN'S PALACE OF CHAGANNOR. At the end of those three days you find a city called CHAGAN NOR [which is as much as to say White Pool], at which there is a great Palace of the Grand Kaan's; and he likes much to reside there on account of the Lakes and Rivers in the neighbourhood, which are the haunt of swans and of a great variety of other birds. The adjoining plains too abound with cranes, partridges, pheasants, and other game birds, so that the Emperor takes all the more delight in staying there, in order [...]

When you think of blues, Cuban dance music, and reggae, and classic Jamaican ska, you naturally think of a setting involving kangaroos, right? No? Well then you may not have in your hands the latest releases from AIM International . It's an odd trio with little musical overlap but lots of soul. These releases aren't even showing up on the AIM website yet (though the official US release date was in May), so here's a first glance. First, Cubanismo -- a project that began after the band [...]

Got this one from The Constant Skeptic According to the Nasa website: "Black spots have been discovered on Mars that are so dark that nothing inside can be seen. Quite possibly, the spots are entrances to deep underground caves capable of protecting Martian life, were it to exist. The unusual hole pictured above was found on the slopes of the giant Martian volcano Arsia Mons. The above image was captured three weeks ago by the HiRISE instrument onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter currently [...]

It's a simple concept today - these 5 discs soundtracked my work day and it was rockin'. Ride - Like A Daydream - The Byrds with serious balls. Booker T. & The M.G.s - Time Is Tight - smooth like butter. Simian - The Way I Live - Beatles-y backing vocals + woozy carnival music = good. The Skatalites - James Bond Theme - the grandaddies of ska rock the spy theme. Richard X - Finest Dreams

Gonna be a quick post today, 'cause it's snowing outside and I want to go play. It's a Bond doubleshot. Following last week's Gypsy brass cover of the Bond theme, I've been digging the variety of tracks on this great new release, from the Bond theme to "Ball of Fire." This is classic stuff, timeless and timely since the Skatalites are on tour , hitting Seattle's Studio Seven this Friday (see calendar ). [mp3] Skatalites: " James Bond Theme " from the album In Orbit [...]

(photo by scumfrog (cc)) It's got really cold, really suddenly here. Since November struck, it went pretty much freezing overnight (literally, Tuesday was fine, Wednesday was bitter) - most of the country is basking in subzero night-times, while in London, with our fug of lovely haze, we're comparatively well-off with an average of +2C. So what better way to celebrate than with the sound of the islands? Everybody loves reggae right? Like, everybody. I do. I love to throw on a Trojan boxset it [...]
"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few. No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare." -James Madison, at 01:02:11 When, however, neither the elements of the offense nor the range of permissible punishments is [...]
