As California's sound savvy Abe Vigoda put's out their new EP, Reviver , they'll be drifting away from their "tropical punk" categorization. It was an attention-grabbing phrase, and the sound was fun while it lasted, but 'Vigoda's got something much more melodic, heavy, and deep waiting in the cannon. I caught up with the band's guitarist, Michael Vidal, and we talked about the band's new sound, their old sound, and their inability to stay in one spot. Read more... DOWNLOAD: Skeletons - The Things (MP3) "With a sound that truly verges on unclassifiable, Brooklyn-based freak-niks Skeletons are an anomaly even at the venerable Tomlab label, which stables an entire herd of experimental artists. For a group to stand out as uniquely off center amid labelmates such as Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof is rather remarkable. Fronted by singer/multi-instrumentalist Matt Mehlan, the fifth full-length album ["Money"] under the Skeleton's banner (third for the full group) features dispirate, [...]
I'm sorry I haven't been updating at all recently, it's been a busy time filled with long delays in airports, old friends, rampant consumerism, and other non-music related things. I plan to step things back up in January, I promise! In fact, I'll be posting tomorrow with my favourite concerts, but for now here is the list of records I couldn't put down in 2008! Why? - Alopecia A beautiful fusion of indie hip hop and indie rock. Yoni Wolf's depression is gorgeous. Perfectly Devastating. [...]
December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008. Nat Baldwin Extra Life - Secular Works Kurt Weisman - Spiritual Sci-Fi The Dead Science - Villainaire Skeletons - Money [...]
Skeletons Money (11.2008, Tomlab) Verdict = Ridiculously ambitious and surprisingly wonderful My goodness, here is a surprise. Usually around late-November/December everything is on cruise control which makes an album like this one all the more shocking when it blips on the radar. Skeletons (formerly with various addendums attached to their names but now gloriously bare) have created a monster with Money , their fifth or sixth full length album and first for Tomlab. So what's the big surprise? We are pretty familiar with monsters here at FG. Why [...]

"I never liked music until I heard my own" is the headline for Canadian electro artiste Felix Cartal's Myspace page, and it certainly doesn't go unsupported by his tracks. The first track up to bat begins with a haunting blasting of synth, it's almost a HOWL, and it's backed by a blippity-blooping backdrop of electronic stabs, and a never failing beat. The track is aptly named "Skeleton" and whirls along in a wonky, grinding, saw-toothed fashion dismembering the dancefloor with laser beam precision. Now we've got "L'Amour" which kicks off with a washboard-like glitch/stutter [...]
It sounds like the NYC band Skeletons is taking quit the sonic shift on their latest record, Money . The band is clearly putting all their efforts toward creating a sound that could only be described as a 70s funk band from hell. Sour horns, a busy guitar, and the crooning vocals of Matthew Mehlan create quite an atmosphere. It's got a bit of Radiohead, a bit of XIU XIU, but it's all topped off with a linear song structure and the grandiosity of a grand old big band. For more info [...]

Another not-so-notable release week. I know it's not that exciting when the two releases I'm looking forward to most are from a classical composer ( Johann Johannsson ) and a split EP with two artists I don't own anything by ( Thursday / Envy ). My guess is people don't want to drop an album on an election day. Can't blame them. It probably explains the huge release weeks we've had through the fall up until now, too. I'll also be checking out Black Moth Super Rainbow , Travis , [...]
I dunno, I think it's kind of necromantic! Well, I thought it was funny. In all seriousness, she is a bit on the skinny side and terrible at making conversation, though I have been told that the sex is fantastic . XTC - Poor Skeleton Steps Out (from Oranges & Lemons , 1989) - If there's one thing I have learned from a life of popcult immersion, it's that "xylophones = skeletons." Vibraphones, too, though the verdict is still out on the [...]

There's a rumble in the graveyard tonight! Pass it on! Mack Allen Smith - Skeleton Fight (from a 1964 single; collected on Monster Bop , 1994) - All the cool cats and kittens who have passed from this world with honor are gathered by the King's sweet betties and delivered to the Juke Joint of Glory. There they jive and wail and slick back their hair in preparation for the coming Ragna-rockabilly.

(Felix Cartal) Harder, harder, harder, harder. That's what Canadian producer/DJ Techjio wanted to come out of his treatment of Felix Cartal 's new track. We think he succeeded because this remix bangs, bangs, bangs. It's total Canadian on Canadian action (Techjio is from Montreal and Cartal hails from Vancouver), which is the only way we like it. (mp3) Felix Cartal - Skeleton (Techjio remix) Godspeed!

Felix Cartal - Skeleton (Techjio Remix) By:Techjio

Well since Ive been tied up on other items, it seems Tart has kept everyone entertained. I decided before I read any of her posts I should probably lay down some stuff so she doesn't yell or throw old discarded fruit at me. So I have been thinking, I need something good to write, hmmm as I am no freelance journalist, and spell check keeps me looking good what can I do as part of the "team". So I got it... CONFESSIONS DAY - so kids it's time [...]

Easily the most striking thing about the new Abe Vigoda album is its production, which is downright poppy relative to tour-mates No Age. Spindly guitars with bizarre effects take up odd angles against each other and tumble from the speakers like Omar Rodriguez-Lopez's used to do when he played in a rock band. Vocals are occasionally intelligible in the mix, performed with a discernible charisma, sometimes chanted, with a dedication to pitch and harmony that recall Eric Gaffney. They've also clearly taken a textural shade from another Pride of Baltimore, Animal Collective, minus their obvious influence of [...]

MP3: Abe Vigoda - Dead City/Waste Wilderness MP3: Abe Vigoda - Cranes Damn man, I was way bummed when I missed the Abe Vigoda duders at the No Age gig in NYC this past weekend ( showed up late ). I did pick up their new album that dropped last week, "Skeleton", which if you've been reading the internet you know is the new hype. It's worth the jerking off over folks, 14 infectious songs in like 32 minutes, all hits and all [...]
