Fear is at the root of man's destruction of himself. Without Fear there is no blame. Without blame there is no conflict. Without conflict there is no destruction. But there IS Fear: deep within the core of every human being it lurks like a monster, dark and intangible. Its outward effects are unmistakable. Its source [...]

When former Lungfish front man Daniel Higgs joined Swedish noise-rock juggernaut The Skull Defekts on their Peer Amid album earlier this year, it seemed like a natural fit that played to the strengths of both parties. Now, taking things one step further, The Skull Defekts teamed up with Zomes, the solo moniker of former Lungfish guitarist Asa Osbourne, for a day-long recording session in Rhode Island. The results are right here on 2013-3012 and they are as excellent as you can imagine. The union of The Skull Defekts and Zomes resurrects the pile-driving drone [...]

The Skull Defekts recent album with Daniel Higgs is one of the band's rawest, most visceral recordings yet and the ensuing tour brought that sonic fury to many stages across the country. On the tour the band hooked up with Higgs' former Lungfish bandmate Asa Osborne (aka Zomes) as an opener. The two groups ended up finding harmony on stage and Osborne began playing a few songs with them, eventually resulting in a new track built on the road. After a cancelled date, the band was able to turn misfortune into kismet by using the time to slip into Rhode [...]

The Skull Defekts have come up with a novel way of producing new music. And when we say novel, that could be interpreted as either: a) actually novel; b) lazy; or c) bonkers. The band have decided to release a six-track 12’’, titled 2013-3012 , where the B-side tracks are essentially the A-side tracks played in reverse. Hell, even the names of the songs are written backwards to hammer the point home. And to top it all off, they’ve gone and given us this track, Childrenerdlihc , which consists of the first few minutes of the opening song, [...]
Inspired by an odd review in The Wire, The Skull Defekts dug down deep and took a journey to the skull of scribe Daniel Spicer and released the result on cassette. More here: http://skulldfx.tumblr.com/pos t/9116780381/investigating-the -skull-of-daniel-spicer

For more than 20 years, Baltimore's Lungfish released albums featuring their own flavor of posthardcore via the Dischord Records label. Well, Dischord recently reissued the band's long-out-of-print eighth record, The Unanimous Hour , recorded at Inner Ear Studios , and mixed by Lungfish and Ian MacKaye . Here is side one, track one. Listen. Downloadable: Space Orgy (mp3) The cover art looks like this: You can order The Unanimous Hour @ dischord.com [...]
Ummmm...... Yes please. Swedish avant-rock group The Skull Defekts released Peer Amid on Thrill Jockey Records about two months ago and supported it with a tour that I was lucky enough to catch at a... Listen At BIRP!

Adam and Baxter of MIRACLES sent us these answers to our questions in this next installment of the q and also a series. q: What is the last song you (really) heard? a: Antimagic 's "Shake Shake Shake" has been in heavy rotation all year. I rediscovered De La Soul 's Stakes is High last week after not listening to it for a few years. It still rules. b: For me, it's a tie between Young Widows ' "Old [...]

THE SKULL DEFEKTS | PEER AMID THRILL JOCKEY After listening to Peer Amid , the latest from Swedish rock band The Skull Defekts, I am finding it hard to think of their name without at least three exclamations behind it. Skull Defekts!!! These guys are known for their minimalist style of ominous rock, and on Peer Amid , they really show they’ve got the chops, as guitarists Joachim Nordwall and Daniel Fagenstroem create a [...]

MP3: The Skull Defekts - In Majestic Drag The Skull Defekts have been at the forefront of the Swedish noise scene the last few years, along with personal favorites Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words. Although the latter has just concluded, The Skull Defekts are still going strong having just released "Peer Amid" on Thrill Jockey . While this is a heavy album, it is by no means suffocating. Instead, "Peer Amid" succeeds in tonal balance and experimenting at [...]
The Skull Defekts and Daniel Higgs are like chocolate and peanut butter. They both taste great separately, but put them together and oh man, is it magical. I just wish they'd tour out west at some point.

Fans of the Baltimore post-hardcore quartet Lungfish have always held the band's enigmatic frontman, Daniel Higgs, in high reverence. And for good reason: It's hard to read the lyrics to any given Lungfish song and not come away with the impression that Higgs has seen sights, heard sounds, and contemplated thoughts the rest of us foolish mortals couldn't even begin to comprehend—much less put to music in a way that somehow resonates with an audience. (To be fair, however, I'm certainly not going to judge anyone who raises an eyebrow at lines such as "My daughter keeps a [...]

Just catching up with The Drake . Stay tuned for another edition later this week. -ed. February may be the shortest and weather-challenged month of the year, but 20112s version has already been both long on and warm to quality releases. I'm not even sure what that means, but it somehow still feels apt in introducing the latest offerings from PJ Harvey , Telekinesis , Drive-By Truckers , Twilight Singers , Bright Eyes , Lifeguards , A Hawk and a Hacksaw , Asobi Seksu , Sonic [...]

Six years since first forming in Gothenburg, the Swedish quartet Skull Defekts are augmented, on this their 13 th release to qualify as an album, by Daniel Higgs of long-standing Dischord artists Lungfish (check out their Talking Songs For Walking while you're about it) on vocals. The album - Peer Amid - is quite a grower, as you'll need a couple of listens to appreciate the various levels within the sounds created. Track two, 'No More Always', for example has, beneath the immediately obvious massive riffs, an Indian raga going on. [...]
