FabChannel After considerable listens, I think I've twigged on to why I'm so taken with The Golden Spike , the debut album from Leeds' Sky Larkin's . The crackling pop-punk energy, barely contained in the power trio configuration, the odd and wiry yet undeniably accomplished guitar work, the raspy vocals that can't quite conceal the sweetness underneath - they remind me of Land Of Talk . A more youthful version, to be sure, with more exuberance and less anxiety, but the parallels - now that they've occurred to [...]

Oh Johnny Foreigner, the only band to put out a record last year that I enjoyed more than either of the Los Campesinos! records. Quite an impressive feat given there is only three of them when the other lot have seven. Even more impressive given their album, Waited Up Til It Was Late was largely made up of older, re-recorded songs. Nearly two and a half years down the line though, they still sound as fresh as they ever did. Of course, it's still lovely to hear some new material, so it was [...]

Well, fans, your favorite Birmingham, England-based noise pop trio this evening put online for two weeks only something called Johnny Foreigner Is Aces (a sentiment we certainly won't argue). Johnny Foreigner Is Aces is not a proper release, but rather a .zip file with two tracks (pure .wav files! awesome!) and two desktop wallpaper images that the band is offering, as we said, for a limited time only. The first track is "Ghost The Festivals," which the band has been playing live for months and months. We think we prefer the live version (we're thinking of [...]

No, I'm not going to what must be music-heaven for every indie-lover, the SXSW-festival in Austin, Texas. But the schedule has now been released, and with that comes a lot of free music from the participants. Here are a few of my picks, and there will definitely be more over the next few weeks! The Von Bondies - This Is Our Perfect Crime [...]

Ingrid Z Those who sought to ride out the global recession by investing their money in Patrick Wolf should be pleased - the project has already yielded dividends! What had originally been intended to be a double album entitled Battle will now instead be two single-length albums entitled The Bachelor and The Conqueror . In an interview with Spinner , Wolf describes the differences between the two as follows - " The Bachelor [has themes of] loneliness, hedonism, depression and melancholy, the second album [...]
Two delights coming up on Fabchannel on Sunday (and then on demand, afterwards): Neko Case and Sky Larkin .
( Witchita ) There are those among us who claim the ability to distinguish between a half-decent wine and a €200 bottle of the finest vintage or, in the same way, spot the difference between every indie band which happens to be led by a female vocalist. We're not talking distasteful plonk versus Dom Perignon, merely separating the good from the best; which can be especially difficult in such a saturated market. ' The Golden Spike ' however, immediately sets Sky Larkin apart from their contemporaries and as rocky drumbeats and plucky riffs rush in [...]

Tom Henry Jones By nature, I'm an album guy and prefer to let my impressions of an artist unfold over forty minutes or so. But sometimes I get swept up in the joy of the single - the one individual song - and give the "repeat" button on my CD player a workout that more than makes up for its usual state of neglect. Such was the case of "Nitrogen Pink", the first single from UK singer-songwriter Polly Scattergood (her real name). Musically, it unfurls from a simple, unadorned intro to a thing of [...]

Heres a tasty little treat for y'all.... Skylarkin Soundsystem has a shindig this Friday and Blunted have 2 tickets to give away! The soundsystem is guaranteed to rock the Cellar to the core as anyone who has seen the Disco Shed or been to one of the nights on the Cowley Road will testify. Here's a few words from Skylarkin impresario Count Skylarkin - With a heavy heart, after six and a half years I have finally taken my regular clubnight off the Cowley Road. However, I promise there [...]

sky lark (sklärk) n. An Old World lark (Alauda arvensis) having brownish plumage and noted for its singing while in flight. intr.v sky larked, sky larking, sky larks - To play actively and boisterously; frolic. Sky Larkin 's name fits them well. Katie Harkin's voice soars and twists powerfully, pushing every line, every chorus to breaking point whilst remaining tender enough to pick up the pieces. It kinda toes the line in a wonderfully, breathy way that leaves me hanging on for something more. Fierce impetus is provided by her bandmates [...]
As a preview to their show at The Parish tomorrow night, ATH had the opportunity to sit down with Ellen Campesinos to ask her a few questions about her band Los Campesinos! Ellen touches on her musical inspirations and makes it well known that the band supports our newest president. Follow the jump for the full interview ATH: You have seven people in the band, and at times it seems like there is a lot of chaos. How do you balance that sound [...]

Liam Henry It's really of no surprise whatsoever that I misread the offer tied to pre-orders of Sky Larkin's debut album The Golden Spike , which I reported on a couple weeks back . I had thought that by committing to the purchase, you'd immediately get MP3 downloads of both the album proper and the live recordings of the same songs. As it turns out, you just get the live set. But that's okay, because February 9 isn't that far off and the live version of [...]
