Some dark techno on Hemlock Recordings from Simon Lord (Lord Skywave) and Graham Douglas Bertie (Nautiluss). Bleu Monday is the tune to go for. Ultraviolet is a strange lounge techno track. Perfect for the club in Twin Peaks. Bleu Monday is an instrumental of real quality. Not the cover version of Blue Monday I was expecting, this creates a relaxing and psychadelic tripped out atmosphere using some gentle techno. Blurb: Our latest 123 comes from a trans-atlantic meeting of minds. [...]

Cover art for Rocket Fire . The new Ceremony record that I speculatively mentioned back in early March is finally really, truly out! True to my hopes and suspicions, it's flat out fantastic. While comparisons could easily be made to A Place To Bury Strangers, anyone with a keen ear for melody would have to agree that Ceremony lends themselves much more to Skywave's pop sensibilities than that of APTBS. That said, the noise is definitely coming before the pop on Rocket Fire — and to great success, too! Songs like [...]

I just got off the phone with Oliver Ackermann , singer and guitarist for Brooklyn-based, notoriously loud, dark and hard ambient experimental rockers, A Place To Bury Strangers , who recently signed to Mute Records. In addition to leading APTBS, Oliver is a former member of Skywave and the inventor of Total Sonic Annihilation, his first effects pedal in a line that can be found at his site, Death By Audio. LW: Hey Oliver, how's it going? OA: Doing great, how are you? LW: I'm fine thanks. Lemme see, I'm not sure [...]

The now defunct Virginia-based Skywave is a name you might not recognize, but their lineage is rather important in the second generation shoegaze (or "newgaze" as it's sometimes referred) movement. Synthstatic is certainly their best, and I first heard it my freshman year in college in 2003 when we received the record at the ol' campus radio station. It was the loudest thing I had ever heard at the time, and I think I played a cut off it during my show every week for six months. It might still be the loudest record I own, [...]

This be Lord Skywave . Simian, great band, great musicians, great artists - James Ford - musical royalty. Skylord be Simon Lord - aka the voice of Simian . After Simian he played in Black Ghosts with a dude called Fake Blood (who is something of a remix superstar in our 88eyes). Always nice to see Various Productions in on the remix action, but the props go to Grosvenor who rip up the original into something damn fine (rather than the lame and soulless track the [...]

Recently an A&SB family member took a trip to Finland for a music conference and came back with a collection of some of the finest music we have never heard. The music world of Scandinavia is a grossly untapped resource of incredible art that we feel needs to brought into the U.S. mainstream. One of those artists in his mighty collection that stood out was JOENSUU 1685 . Their new, self-titled album takes everything you love from My Bloody Valentine, Skywave and The Jesus & Mary Chain and blends it together [...]

Most people know ' Total Sonic Annihilation ' as one of Oliver Ackerman's signature effect pedals, but Acky also happens to lead the impossibly loud A Place to Bury Strangers . And even before that trio gained any notoriety, Ackerman was fronting a very similar sounding act called Skywave . The group was equally powerful, noisy as fuck, and ultra catchy -- lead by destructive guitars inspired by JAMC/MBV. [...]

Ahead of the Neo-Shoegazing resurgence by at least 5 years, Virginia's Skywave [1995-2003] channeled My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain and more. An experience they apparently parlayed into an effects pedal business, appropriately named Death by Audio. Today it would appear that they are producing records [scroll right] by some of the new breed of shoegazers, like Dirty on Purpose (Drawer B review ). skywave: baby it's just you

I was talking to an online friend last night and we got on the subject of the band Skywave . The discussion inspired me to make a post about them today and their wonderful album Synthstatic . Although the trio had a few albums before Synthstatic, it’s definitely their crowning achievement as a band. Upon first listen of Synthstatic it’s easy to cast it aside and merely label it as nothing more than a tribute to Jesus and Mary Chain . Although there is [...]
