Greetings from La Quinta in Denver. We made record time from Houston to Denver today - about 14 hours. Getting some rest tonight and then hittin' the (hopefully unfrozen) pavement again in the morning for about 4 more hours to our destination of Steamboat Springs. This quaint Colorado town will be gearing up for Music Fest as we gear up for a 44" snow base and champagne powder runs. Tomorrow night will be full of fireworks, champagne, and whiskey - yes all [...]

Slaid Cleaves – November Skies buy Slaid Cleaves' Holiday Sampler ( 2001) As always, a great story behind this one.
Richard sent this along, and it is perfect to match my musings of today. The song is a Fred Eaglesmith and it appears on an album called The Songs of Fred Eaglesmith: A Tribute. MP3 File

Slaid Cleaves: This Mornin' I Was Born Again [ purchase ] Like Paul and Brendan , Payton is one of us; in fact, he may be the youngest contributor to Star Maker Machine, having just completed college this past year. But you'd never know he was born years after the release of some of his favorite music if he didn't tell you right up front in the sidebar of This Mornin' I Am Born Again . The writing over at This [...]

In addition to his latest, all covers release Unsung , Slaid Cleaves has been known to mix in his version of someone else's tune from time to time. But just as on that last album, Slaid absolutely owns the songs he covers and always adds his own flavor. In fact, i was going to post these two songs simply because of how good they are before i realized they weren't his. [...]

Slaid Cleaves: Flowered Dresses [ purchase ] Slaid Cleaves. If it's folk music you like… he's your one-stop source. A man well versed in the art of storytelling, Slaid Cleaves evokes that dust-bowl, depression era ambiance as good as anyone. He's the guy that put music a set of Woody Guthrie lyrics that became the namesake for my blog: This Mornin' I Am Born Again . Flowered Dresses was part of Slaid's most recent (although released in [...]

A year ago today, after some contemplation, I started off on this little experiment of a music blog. One year later, 425 posts and a total of 121,433 and 143,160 page visits (somewhat less unique visitors - this number is low, because I added on tracking a couple months after I started.) I'd say this is a success. The site has really grown over the past couple of months, and I've tried a number of features, such as the Cover and Original , Acoustic and Original , Live and Original , Artist Evolution , 80 [...]

My birthday is officially over now......... This is the first year that i really haven't been all that excited for it. Maybe it's because my birthday was also a dreaded deadline for a looming online class. Maybe it's because it sorta also marks the beginning of the rest of my life and the real world. Who knows?? Today i got to: • wake up early and go to the dentist • run a few errands • drive 2 hrs away just to pack up some shit and drive back But [...]

It's almost been a week since my last post. i've been back and forth between here and there. Mostly i've been back home letting my mother take care of me cause i just got my wisdom teeth yanked out of my face. i'm really not in too much pain (i ain't skimpin' on the hydrocodone, though); the worst part is......... i'm hungry as shit. i'm tired of soup and jello. So to end this blogging hiatus and to make me even hungrier, here are some good food-related tunes: [...]

Time for another Playlist Pulse . This time from the one titled grooves . These are simply those songs that make you tap you boots, drum on the desk, or just bob a head. Whether it's the plunk of a banjo, the beat of a tom, or the groove initiated by a plugged in guitar, it's hard not to move to these songs: 1. mp3: The Be Good Tanyas - Rain & Snow [...]

Sigh.......... Kasey Chambers. What can i say? i think i fell in love even before i saw a picture of her. That somewhat squeaky, almost childlike, but damn sexy voice pulled me in. So i was pretty excited to find out that 1) she was gorgeous enough to match her voice and 2) she can write/make some amazing alt-country music. Just as a fair warning, this post will contain more pictures than most simply because i like to look at her. [...]

What originally started as an Irish religious holiday back in the 17th century has now become one largest worldwide holiday celebrations of the year. St Patrick's Day is when everyone gets to be Irish for a day, so put on your best green shirt, pour yourself a pint of Guinness and a shot of whiskey and join the party. Have fun and be safe. and a light shines on my land i no longer look for heaven in your deathly, distant land i do not want your pearly gates don't want your streets of gold This mornin' i was born again and a light shines on my soul This mornin' i was born again, i was born again complete i stood up above my troubles and i stand on my two feet My hand it feels unlimited, my body feels like the sky i feel at home in the universe where yonder planets fly This mornin' i was born again, [...]

As i mentioned in a previous post, i use the Hype Machine ( http://www.hypem.com/ ) to find, and listen to, a lot of music. It's an amazing site, but you can't find everything on there. It seems that a few a my favorite artists cannot be found in the blog world. But now that i have my own blog, i can change all that. And maybe in the process - turn some people on to some great musicians they may not know about. First order [...]

Over on the Lucero Message board, we have ushered in 2008 with one of our best comp efforts to date. I advise you to download it, pour yourself a whiskey drink while it comes down, then sit back and let the musical goodness wash over you like a warm buzz. You can head over to the Lucero Message board to see who submitted each track and a brief description of why they chose that specific track. You can even download it here for the next 2 weeks or so. If you enjoy it, sign up for the [...]
