Originally MCed at SomaCow.com In this, our finest hour, we talked about the lyrical gangstas, Tasty Kakes, and Small.... umm.... Packages. No, really! I am now well aware of the fact that J, Mickey, and I are quite white. Quite. That being said, we certainly want to pay respect to great black music. Who among us hasn't felt the joggle and bounce of some great "urban" beats and desperately wished they could "hustle", whatever that is? The sad reality is that it takes a lot [...]

We're doing no apparent theme this week, just big songs to get to. 6th Borough Project - Do It To The Max Another slow tempo marcher (srsly try marching to it). The low vocal just hooks you instantly. Nice for the early night when everyone's sober. Harlem Zip Code - I Feel Music ok so, this track is just amazing. dj soulfeather brought it to my attention [...]
Last month, on the Atlanta, GA stop on the esteemed NIN/Jane's Addiction tour going on right now, Trent Reznor and the boys called on the indie poet laureate Saul Williams to help with vocal duties during "Survivalism", from the Nine Inch Nails disc Year Zero . Please enjoy life for the next five minutes and change. You can tell that NIN and Mr Williams did. The tour stopped at NY's Jones Beach last night and they'll be hitting Columbia, MD's Merriweather Post Pavillion tomorrow. (mp3) Nine Inch [...]

Another couple of D's selections from 1993, with two classics from Slam and Quench. Quench – Dreams (Extended Mix) (Infectious Records 1993 ) Is this an early trance record? I only ask because I hated trance. There was something irredeemably crappy about it, no real substance or balls, all cream and no pastry. And yet, this does seem to have a tranceyish feel about it. In fact, whilst sorting out this track, X and I had a verbal ping pong of 'Is this techno? Or trance? Or is it trancey techno? Or tech-trance?' At [...]
Slam's Positive Education originally dropped in 1993 and would go on to put Slam and Soma firmly on the map of house and techno world. After getting under the nails of pretty much every DJ in the planet and being remixed by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Josh Wink and Derrick Carter, this timeless classic once again is ready to destroy soundsystems throughout the world with two more incredible reworks. Paul Ritch exploded onto the scene in 2006 with his own breed of haunted techno and since then the young Parisian has gone to release [...]

A bit of proper acid house from Scotland's egg-obsessed Ege Bam Yasi. Although I had a summary of his background a month ago , there's no point in doing a proper bio when his own one is so entertaining: "Formed in Stirling, Scotland in late 1984 as a free form eggsperimental one piece playing McAcid House before anyone knew what it was called, fusing many eggclectic influences, including Can, Captain Beefheart, Fad Gadget, and Electro, into a uniquegg style - in retrospect [...]

"Slam are on fire right now. After one of their busiest years ever in 2008, culminating in their BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix at the end of December, 2009 sees no let-up for the duo as they rampage their way to the top of house & techno once again. Ghost Song marks the first of 4 massive releases you can expect from Slam before the summer. Opening the 123 is one of the most-respected DJs and producers around at the moment, Joris Voorn. With releases on Music Man, Sound Architecture, and Technasia's [...]

"SLAM release the second single on their new imprint PARAGRAPH. The new single Hot Knives is a beast of a track and is being touted by many as their biggest dance floor destroyer since Positive Education!!! >Hot Knives< will be one of the biggest techno tracks of the year and is already a massive record for the lucky few DJs who have it. Balanced by the deep and twisted >Whats On Your Mind< which Slam previewed on their recent sci-fi hi-fi mix CD Dubfire - Yo track is sick. Going to make my new year. This is huge. / Paul [...]

I'm nicking this from audio.out - It saves me ripping it from vinyl. Thanks and Down with news! Sunscreem Love U More (Slame) My record has, I think, a mis-print in that the mix is by 'Slame'. Loved DJing this in a Sheffield Crookes Cellar years ago - a lady complained there was no beat just as the the bounce and clicks kicked in! [...]

Some lyrics coming into action, here....

You asked for Scottish legends Slam. Slam are Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle; DJ and producer duo from Glasgow, Scotland. Equally noteworthy, they were co-founders of Soma Records. Soma is incredibly important to UK dance music, since it provided the main bridge to the Detroit Techno sounds after Warp and others went off in different directions. They also gave Daft Punk their first proper release. They have been releasing music since 1991. Forgive me, but I'm going to post two classic tracks [...]
