Joe Budden may be hip-hop's premier prima donna, but that doesn't mean the dude can't rhyme. I personally prefer Jaysaun and Reef the Lost Cauze - both of whom I've always thought ring in the same vein as Budden. Still, this Jersey rat breathes some convincing fire on occasion, and this happens to be one of them. Joe's fanboys can leave their vitriol in the comment section below... " Got this whole shit covered...Darrelle Revis " There's comes a point where a rapper is almost too good for his own good. Case in point, Joey Budden and Nickel Nina . Typically, most less-inferior MCs spread their punch-lines around, leaving listeners time to process their prowess. These Slaughterhouse butchers, however, deliver TKOs so frequently, listeners can't even keep up and don't even realize how potent the product really is. That, or they become diehard fans who don't buy CDs . One or the other. [...]

These quakes must have shaken some sincerity into Crooked I , because instead of dropping another punchline-polluted throwaway, the LBC vet stepped up to the plate and delivered a phenomenal crossover song (yes, an actual song ...that he wrote down on paper) touching on the never-ending ills of every society on this crumbling planet we call home. It seems as if he beat-jacked some Pop-Tart named Sally Anthony , but we should all be thankful. People are always so up in arms about why some of these lyrical rappers [...]

The album may have decreased in monetary significance over the years, but few can deny the calibration it stacks onto an artist's creative worth. Who can come the most original, pick the best beats, wedge through that sliver of possibility of reinventing the wheel, all of those ideals factor into who's really running this rap ish. Which bring us to this point. As the final entry for our look back into the last year of the previous decade, we give props to the ones that still honor the original template that allow the ever [...]

For a break from radical posturing and whizzing bullets, 2010 promises spreads from two of the genre's most reliable beat specialists. Lucky for us, former Aesop Rock collaborator BLOCKHEAD 's The Music Scene (Ninja Tune, due January 12) arrived at the Phoenix months ago and is surely his most mesmerizing sonic spring break ever. I have yet to hear The Colossus (RJ's Electrical Connections, January 19) from instrumentally inclined stylist RJD2 , but if anyone can bounce back from a lackluster performance like 2007's The Third Hand , it's him. [...]
Mos Def - Quiet Dog Bite Hard Mos Def - Quiet Dog Bite Hard Ah, the best song category. Even though my choices were limited to hip-hop, I had a nearly impossible time compiling this list and selecting a victor. In the end, I narrowed the short-list down to the songs that got progressively better with each listen [...]
Drake - Man Of The Year feat. Lil Wayne Song: Man Of The Year feat. Lil Wayne Drake No matter if you're his biggest fan or find him annoying and bland, there is no possible way you can deny Drake's impact this year. After dropping So Far Gone, a mixtape that some respected sites and critics went so [...]
Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: The End Of Day This was not an easy choice. I was struggling between this and Mos Def's The Ecstatic for weeks, but ultimately, I felt that Kid Cudi's Man On The Moon: The End Of Day was the more complete album. Presented as a mini-movie with its division [...]

You've got to give Crooked I credit for creativity. Few are better at generating underground buzz, the latest example being the ridiculous cover to his new EP, Mr. Pigface Weapon Waist . Both cover and title suggest the project to be an adventure in weirdness. But surprisingly, there's no stylistic difference between the Crooked I we've known and "Mr. Pig Face." The creativity of the cover doesn't carry over to the music. The potential of a unique Pig Face persona pervades the intro but Crooked seems uncommitted from the first full [...]
