The scarcely illumined signpost cowering slenderly in January gloom before Cecil Sharp House reads: 'The English Folk Dance And Song Society'. And while the lavish compositional work of Adam Wiltzie's latest (and questionably greatest) project, A Winged Victory For The Sullen shan't provide any such sort of frivolous gaiety, there's a fair amount of aerobic exercise taking place down in the basement. Rigorous folk dancing betides below to the soundtrack of the excessively jaunty violins that emanate from within, the sort of scene typically set in dubiously sinister TV-only period drama and from the outside looking in, the [...]

Today's Friday Mixtape comes to you from Jan and it's entitled PaperPlanes. It's very much softer and slower . There will be no rump shaking around here this week. Thanks to everyone else who sent in their respective mixtapes. This was my favorite for the week if only because it's an auditory exploration of Also there is no full length streaming version of this just individual mp3s. Play this week's mixtape: 13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round the Side of Your Bed - A Silver Mt. Zion [...]

Every now and then, a record will come along, usually pretty much out of nowhere, that is so staggeringly pure in its beauty that you simply have to stop whatever else you happen to be doing at the time, and let it your brain and body be fully immersed in it. The last time I experienced this was upon encountering Perfume Genius' devastating debut album Learning last year, and it has happened again, this time with Sleepingdog 's With Our Heads in the Clouds and Our Hearts in the Fields. Gizeh Records is a Leeds based record label run by Richard Knox. Rich is also one half of Trampoline favourites Glissando and runs a successful PR company called Sleepsound. I'm not sure when Gizeh actually came to be but when I first met Rich the only 2 bands on the label were Her Name Is Calla and Glissando. Since then I have seen Gizeh go from being a very small D.I.Y label to being named as Radio One's record label of the week. and I for one could not be happier for him. Rich is one of the [...]

Sping. SPRING. Hurry the FUCK UP for Christ's sake before we all go fucking mental. Good grief what a long drawn out wait it has been. Some sunshine would be nice. A cup of tea in the garden would be nice. Actually, even the chance to go outside of a weekend and rescue the garden from the tangle of weeds and fallen leaves it has become over the winter would be nice. Obviously there'd have to be coke and whores afterwards, just to keep up the rock 'n' roll pretensions, but for now a nice cuppa and a Rich Tea [...]

Sleepingdog hits the UK on March 14th to start her 6 date tour. Chantal will be over from her base in Belgium to promote her latest record 'Polar Life' which was released by Gizeh back in November. Here are the dates in full: March 14th Chichester - The Hope 15th Brighton - Prince Albert 17th London - Macbeth 18th Leeds - House Show 19th Newcastle - Arts Centre 20th Edinburgh - Wee Red Bar
I'm a bit of a sucker for a haunting female vocal (must be my Pale Saints, Cocteau, Sundays upbringing) so it didn't take very long before I was under the spell of Sleepingdog's Chantal Acda. I'm hearing very early career Sinead O'Connor (and believe me this is a good thing) in her impassioned delivery. It really is tearful stuff and a lot of the credit must go to Adam Wiltzie's sparse Eno-esque
