"All of your city lights turn your brightest days into sleepless nights" sings Other Lives in their song "Desert" which I couldn't legally include here, but there have been many days that I play the song just to hear those words. Taken out of context, I find myself relating those sleepless nights to some of the restless anxiety ridden ones, and other times it makes me think of missing the last subway home and enjoying the long walk home after a successful night out, the summer breeze flirting with the hem of my dress. Both scenarios encapsulate [...]

![Fortunate Ones – Sleepless Nights & Numb Hearts [MIXTAPE]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3465808_lg.jpg)
The Fortunate Ones finally release their project Sleepless Nights & Numb Hearts which is presented by YouHeardThatNew.com. All 19 records consist of original production and it features World War, R.J. Resistor and Danae. The Fortunate Ones say. Sleepless Nights represent the evenings we spent perfecting our craft, the nights of mischief, the nights with friends that are embedded in our minds, the nights with women we lust & the nights we created music. Numb Hearts represent the isolation from temptations on those sleepless nights, as well as the [...]

As you may know, the Halifax rock machine known as the Sleepless Nights have been releasing a series of free EP's on their website over the last 6 or 7 months. I was certainly a fan of EP's 1 ( King Diamond ) and 2 ( The Phone Booth Outside the Video Store ), but the 3rd installment is out (You can get it from their site , or uh, you know, down below) and it's a different beast altogether. The Communication Barrier is a fitting finale to the [...]

It's true, Dearest Friends, the good ship SS FiL has embarked on a brand new journey, leaving behind my musical doldrums of 2009 and sailing into a shining new sea of tuneful goodness. And speaking of goodness, well... GOODNESS! If you're still sticking around after that forced metaphor, then you deserve a reward. So far the start of the year seems to be shaping up all fine and poppy. After the idylls of The Idyllists last week, I've got three bouncy bits for you. First up are The Sleepless Nights , four [...]

Hopefully you caught my post from October about the Sleepless Nights and their plan to give away 3 EPs in a nine month span, but even if you didn't, there's no need to despair, I can get you up to speed rather quickly. The first EP in the series was King Diamond , and you can get it here . The latest one is called The Phone Booth Outside The Video Store and it is now available here . I know what you're thinking now though, the contrary little [...]

I think in many ways our staff here at Insomnia Radio can relate to the name of our featured band as well as track name today. I basically had stumbled across this new track by Canada's SLEEPLESS NIGHTS when I was zoning out to another track they had released the previous year; and noticed a whole new EP was totally free to download. I guess Sleepless Nights live to write music. While writing song after song after song it became apparent it was time to bring these songs to the forefront. Their plan - release three EPs [...]

It's Thursday, I know you have a weekend to start daydreaming about, so I'll keep this brief. The fine gents of Sleepless Nights have decided to give you free music. Well you, me, and anyone with internet access and the opposable digits required to execute a save as. They will be releasing 3 free EP's - the first is called King Diamond and you can get it here . It's short and sweet at four songs, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Just catchy hooks (Radio [...]

The rotating cast of characters that have played a part in shaping the sound of the Sleepless Nights is almost like a Halifax version of BSS. The core structure is there - currently it's Andrew Wallace, Jeffrey Pineau, Josh Poireau, Philip Clark and Trevor Murphy - but most of those people play in other bands and other talented friends have spent time on the road and in the studio with the band. For familiar North Enders, this band has been a constantly evolving mass – growing [...]

Here we are folks: I've finally gotten off my festively-enlarged ass (seriously, between Mom's holiday treats and Dad's beer I gained about 8 pounds) and finished my top albums of 2008. As per usual, these are all Canadian releases, as that's where the ground is closest to my ears. Here they are roughly arranged in descending order (very roughly): The Olympic Symphonium - More in Sorrow Than in Anger (Forward Music Group) I was a huge supporter of The Olympic Symphonium 's 2007 debut, [...]

Immaculate Machine is an indie rock band out of Victoria, BC which has three band members. The members include Brooke Gallupe (guitar/voice), Kathryn Calder (keyboard/voice), and Luke Kozlowski (drums/voice). The trio just finished up working on a new album with producer Colin Stewart titled High On Jackson Hill and will be released in March or April. The band is one of Mint Records many bands from the Vancouver area. This is obviously a very busy time of year for everyone, and I reached out to Immaculate Machine via their myspace page and got my response! [...]
It's about damn time I got around to looking back on 2008. What can I say, December's a busy month. That said, I've spent the last few weeks pouring over the music that passed my way this year and am finally ready to divulge my favourites. There's nothing like diving in head first, so here are my 30 top Canadian tunes of the last 12 months. For ease of posting I've divided this list into 2 parts-essentially two mix-tapes, each subjectively arranged in a way that I thought would make a nice listen all the way through. Here's [...]
Well it's not quite the end of the month, but in my life it feels close enough. Here are a collection of the best tracks I found this month on the interwebs. Thanks again to all the anonymous donors, blogs, and aggregators for providing us all with some awesome music. If you're just stumbling upon this blog for the first time take a second and check out all the other Best of the Month posts here, check in on the Best of the Remix project here, or take a peek at what I considered the best albums of 2007 here. Although these boys hail from beautiful Halifax Nova Scotia I would easily place their debut full length disc alongside the stalwart acts of the western American pop rock music; Death Cab for Cutie, the Long Winters, and Band of Horses. From the opening note of track one, Allyson Got Robbed, to the swirling delerious end of the album's closing track, Breathe Deep Tornado, there is not a moment on Turn Into Vapour that will only leave you wanting more. Although the term shoegaze is bandied about a bit much I do believe these boys take the [...]
( Forward Music Group , Jan. 15, 2008) Some days I really just want to pack up shop and move to the East Coast. Call it the whimsy of being near the ocean or simply the draw of great east coast indie rock coming out of places like Halifax, either way I'm gradually living vicariously through the imaginary version of myself who romantically schleps fish in the Maritimes. My latest reason to seek a breath of sea-salted air comes by way of Turn Into Vapour , the new release from Halifax's [...]

The blog turned 2 today! Happy Birthday Indie Music Filter. 2 years and 383 posts, still rolling. Been spinning The Sleepless Nights a lot lately here in the office. They're a Halifax band originally formed as a three piece. Now the band has grown to a six-peice, comprised of other east coast bands like The Superfantastics , Share and The Establishment . You might have seen them open for bands like The Hylozoists , Jon Rae & The River or [...]

Ok, we're a solid week into January, the holidays are finally over, and despite the warm weather we're having here on the east coast, winter is here. Unless of course you happen to live in one of those warm places that has no winter, in which case, you can ignore all this waffle. But for those of us about to endure the traditionally desolate months of January and February, good music is an essential aid in making it through to spring with one's sanity intact. Therefore, my first review of '08 brings you just that, good music to help you [...]
