Photos and words by Scott Sheff Sleepy Sun was back with its psychedelic set under a sea of red lights, adding to the ambiance and mood fitting of its musical vibe at The Satellite. There was a large contingent from The Royal Order of Rabbits to see their Saints, Joshua Tree’s Gram Rabbit. Opening the night was the bluesy duo Strange Vine out of Fresno. Despite a broken left arm due to a skateboarding accident, drummer Ian Blesse was flawless in keeping beat with fellow bandmate and guitarist Toby Cordova. [...]

Moon Block Party is throwing their first San Francisco event at Brick and Mortar Music Hall next weekend (10/13/12) with Sleepy Sun , JUJU (LA) and Glitter Wizard and Al Lover & the Haters . In addition to live music and DJ sets from Al Lover, there will be an art show adorning the club curated by local zine Sioux Magazine . Last week, from 9/10 - 9/16, the Incubate festival moved into the city of Tilburg, in the Netherlands. Along with a range of other cultural offerings, Incubate hosted more than 300 musical acts in a wide array of indie, underground, and avant garde genres. Photographer Graeme Flegenheimer was on hand to document some of the action for Stereogum. Among the bands he shot were Japandroids, Cult Of Youth, Iceage, and the Men. At The Drive-In and the Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler Zavala has been plenty busy with both of his bands this year, but he's also set to release an album with his new project Anywhere, a duo with former Triclops! member and Liquid Indian mastermind Christian Eric Beaulieu. The new project doesn't sound anything like either of Bixler Zavala's other bands. Instead, it's meditative, straining-for-transcendence psychedelic acoustic music. Sleepy Sun have announced a string of UK tour dates for September as part of their wider European tour. The run of four UK dates will see the San Francisco band play their own shows for the first time since the release of their third album Spine Hits . The folks behind the Moon Block Party — who staged the DIY shows Desert Daze in Desert Hot Springs during Coachella — brought the festivities to Pomona on Saturday, bringing about 30 bands to the city's Art Colony for an eclectic day of psych-rock, garage and indie-rock. highlights included headlining sets by Fool's Gold and the Entrance Band, along with notable performances by Sleepy Sun (top photo), Crystal Antlers, Dahga Bloom, Incan Abraham and Mothers of Gut. When it comes to suspending your brain somewhere between stoner oblivion and psychedelic bliss, JUJU has mojo. The trance-y rock is the new venture of singer-guitarist Phil Pirrone (Jeffertiti's Nile, A Static Lullaby, Casket Salesman) and Incan Abraham drummer Andrew Clinco. Over the drummer's thunderous rhythms, Pirrone loops guitar and bass, building an almost primordial swirl of tones. "G for a G" is from the duo's forthcoming first EP, some of which will be on display Saturday when they play the Moon Block Party , a free, all-ages event (that Pirrone helps organize) in the Pomona Arts [...]

Midway through an epoch culturally formulated according to obsessional compartmentalisation into which supergroups slot in order that they may systematically perpetuate the careers of the already-perennial and predominantly tedious, it's not only a relief but also a wonder a band such as Anywhere even exist. Needless to say Zwan this ain't and although the likes of Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Mike Watt and Christian Eric Beaulieu certainly reinsert the 'super' into the aforenamed term, perhaps the greatest strength of this eponymous debut is that it wholly literally sounds as though it could've come from Anywhere whilst simultaneously, quite gloriously, seeming [...]

I'll Be Your Mirror returned to northernmost London reach, boasting a quintessentially outré rundown which took in everything from thrash metal heralds ( Slayer ), sludge pukers ( Sleep ), sadcore progenitors ( Codeine ) and cutesy pop pairings ( Tennis and to a substantially lesser degree, the Tall Firs ). Only ATPers would arguably opt to fester in darkened rooms listening to largely incessant doom during enduring heatwave. However the way in which the festival has come to represent a safe haven of sorts, concealed from the perils of the wider world and the mainstreams which amble through it makes the way in which the mercifully well air-conditioned West Hall figuratively seems quite so far removed from the wildly stifling climes outside appear exceedingly germane.
