PHOTOS: SLEEPY SUN + GRAM RABBIT + STRANGE VINE @THE SATELLITE Photos and words by Scott Sheff Sleepy Sun was back with its psychedelic set under a sea of red lights, adding to the ambiance and mood fitting of its musical vibe at The Satellite. There was a large contingent from The Royal Order of Rabbits to see their Saints, Joshua Tree’s Gram Rabbit. Opening the night was the bluesy duo Strange Vine out of Fresno. Despite a broken left arm due to a skateboarding accident, drummer Ian Blesse was flawless in keeping beat with fellow bandmate and guitarist Toby Cordova. [...]

Subliminal Stunner: Rachel Fannan – “Beautiful Dreamer” (Canon Commercial)

Only You "Applying Myself"
Rachel Fannan , former member of Sleepy Sun , departed from that band to form Only You . While those bands, Sleepy Sun and Only You, may mean nothing to those unfamiliar with indie music, more people have probably heard Fannan than they realize. The reason? Her cover of "Beautiful [...]

Incubate Festival 2012 In Photos

Last week, from 9/10 - 9/16, the Incubate festival moved into the city of Tilburg, in the Netherlands. Along with a range of other cultural offerings, Incubate hosted more than 300 musical acts in a wide array of indie, underground, and avant garde genres. Photographer Graeme Flegenheimer was on hand to document some of the action for Stereogum. Among the bands he shot were Japandroids, Cult Of Youth, Iceage, and the Men. The latter two acts played sets with a focus on unreleased material; both should have new albums in early 2013. Read More...

Anywhere – “Dead Golden West” (Stereogum Premiere)

Anywhere – “Dead Golden West” (Stereogum Premiere) At The Drive-In and the Mars Volta frontman Cedric Bixler Zavala has been plenty busy with both of his bands this year, but he's also set to release an album with his new project Anywhere, a duo with former Triclops! member and Liquid Indian mastermind Christian Eric Beaulieu. The new project doesn't sound anything like either of Bixler Zavala's other bands. Instead, it's meditative, straining-for-transcendence psychedelic acoustic music. Their self-titled album arrives later this month. Below, download the album track "Dead Golden West," which has vocals from former Sleepy Sun singer Rachel Fannan, as well as the album's tracklist. Photos: Sleepy Sun, Entrance Band, Allah-Las @ Moon Block Party in Pomona, CA 6/23/12 The 2nd annual Moon Block Party has come and gone and I figured it best if I post some pictures I took there; just to help establish my alibi for the night. You know, just in case. [...]

Ears Wide Open: JUJU (plus, set times for Saturday’s Moon Block Party in Pomona)

Ears Wide Open: JUJU (plus, set times for Saturday’s Moon Block Party in Pomona) When it comes to suspending your brain somewhere between stoner oblivion and psychedelic bliss, JUJU has mojo. The trance-y rock is the new venture of singer-guitarist Phil Pirrone (Jeffertiti's Nile, A Static Lullaby, Casket Salesman) and Incan Abraham drummer Andrew Clinco. Over the drummer's thunderous rhythms, Pirrone loops guitar and bass, building an almost primordial swirl of tones. "G for a G" is from the duo's forthcoming first EP, some of which will be on display Saturday when they play the Moon Block Party , a free, all-ages event (that Pirrone helps organize) in the Pomona Arts [...]

On Monday night, things get awfully loud at the Crocodile with  A Place To Bury Strangers, This Will Destroy You, and Dusted, while some of our favorite Canadian's - Japandroids hit the stage at Neumo's. Omnipotent. Anywhere, Anywhere.

Omnipotent. Anywhere, Anywhere. Midway through an epoch culturally formulated according to obsessional compartmentalisation into which supergroups slot in order that they may systematically perpetuate the careers of the already-perennial and predominantly tedious, it's not only a relief but also a wonder a band such as Anywhere even exist. Needless to say Zwan this ain't and although the likes of Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Mike Watt and Christian Eric Beaulieu certainly reinsert the 'super' into the aforenamed term, perhaps the greatest strength of this eponymous debut is that it wholly literally sounds as though it could've come from Anywhere whilst simultaneously, quite gloriously, seeming [...]

Festival Frolics: I'll Be Your Mirror 2012.

Festival Frolics: I'll Be Your Mirror 2012. I'll Be Your Mirror returned to northernmost London reach, boasting a quintessentially outré rundown which took in everything from thrash metal heralds ( Slayer ), sludge pukers ( Sleep ), sadcore progenitors ( Codeine ) and cutesy pop pairings ( Tennis and to a substantially lesser degree, the Tall Firs ). To quote pretty much every bloody band on the bill, "Thanks Barry; Deborah." For finer weekends may now be few and far between... Review: Friday, 25th May / Saturday, 26th May / [...]

Festival Frolics: Sunday, I'll Be Your Mirror 2012.

Festival Frolics: Sunday, I'll Be Your Mirror 2012. Only ATPers would arguably opt to fester in darkened rooms listening to largely incessant doom during enduring heatwave. However the way in which the festival has come to represent a safe haven of sorts, concealed from the perils of the wider world and the mainstreams which amble through it makes the way in which the mercifully well air-conditioned West Hall figuratively seems quite so far removed from the wildly stifling climes outside appear exceedingly germane. It's the sort of atmosphere in which creative freedom may be birthed without deformation; in which a sense of liberty and self-expression are greeted with [...]
