I've seen these guys perform five times now if I'm not mistaken and each show has...
2009 is an exciting year for music so far and this quarter was especially sweet over at EOTB....

It's July 1st, the mid-point of the year, a good time to reflect on what we've been offered musically so far in 2009. There's been some stonkers like Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective and Fever Ray but you know about them already. I've listed my ten obvious favourite records of the year so far and then fifteen overlooked ones (with MP3s) you should definitely check out. Obviously "overlooked" is not exact science but generally, these are records you would like to see get more attention in the remaining six months of the year. I left out a couple of [...]

Photos by: Nicole Browner Earlier this year, I attended one of those Brightblack Morning Light showcases at Cafe Du Nord. It was so resolutely weird (both good and bad weird), that in hindsight, it has proven to be a personal turning point for my overall consideration of the Bay Area's so-called "freak folk" or your 'term of choice' movement. Symbolically, at least. Like a plume of smoke, the 10 mph soothing and repetitive soul stoned picnic that is Brightblack, wafted over a suspiciously passive audience, a great number of which funneled out [...]

San Francisco-by-way-of-Santa Cruz sextet Sleepy Sun officially released their full-length debut Embrace last week on ATP Recordings. The album has as many quiet and soft moments as it does blaring and distorted hard rock. Check out their beautiful live acoustic version of the track "Snow Goddess." Tour dates: Jun 19 2009 - Great American Music Hall - San Francisco, California Jul 5 2009 - Eurockéennes Festival - Belfort, France Jul 7 2009 - Hoxton Bar & Kitchen - London, UK Jul 8 2009 - Seven Live [...]

San Franciso's Sleepy Sun faithfully conjures Bay Area psychedelic pioneers Blue Cheer on their latest batch of carefully tie-dyed, acid-soaked blues-rock. Imagine Fleet Foxes or Cat Power drenched in proto-metal haze, playing to a tribe of mystics in a stinking culvert somewhere underneath California—not bad, not bad at all. Sounds Like: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club | Brian Jonestown Massacre | The Black Angels Sleepy Sun : ( MySpace / Official ) Pull the trigger. [...]
Per un compleanno importante un cast perfetto. Ed il regalo più bello. Noi siamo già partiti. MP3 For Carnation - How I Beat The Devil
If you live in the greater San Francisco area I hope to see you at tonight's first Sleepy Sun...
Headlining that night was The Entrance Band. Not missing a beat, their set seemed to explode from the moment the members took the stage, with a fierce combination of psychedelic, blues, and rock—it almost feels like a martian attack on your soul, especially as Guy Blakeslee's vocals reach their coda, like watching the sky opens up for the birth and death of an actual star.

Sleepy Sun - "New Age" SF's Sleepy Sun -fresh off a European tour including stops at the Primavera and All Tomorrow's Parties festivals-is back in the US and gearing up for the release of their debut album Embrace on ATP Recordings on June 16th. The record, which mixes psych rock freakouts, folky intimacy and otherworldy sounds, is simply one of the most exciting releases of the year and very much worth checking out. Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound - "Two Birds" (featuring [...]

Sleepy Sun - Snow Goddess (Daytrotter Session - 5/15/2009) It's hard to believe that less than a year ago I was weaving my way through SF's homogenous hipster youth to find a perfect vantage point to watch high school comrades and their Santa Cruz sourced crew play their first record release party in the cavernous confines of a warehouse turned makeshift venue. Cloaked in psychedelic patterns projected on stage, this humble band proceeded to blow the crowd away with their fantastic vocals, tight grooves and wailing guitars. In the better part of a year since this [...]

This morning on Twitter and on a whim, I asked the question: What's your favourite song right now? The response was brilliant and the tunes were great so I'm gonna collate the replies (limited to 20) here. Of course if you missed the discussion, you can always leave your response in the comments -Thanks to all for replying. Ladies and gentlemen - Your favourite songs right now are: Dizzee Rascal - That's Not My Name (Ting Tings cover) [...]

Sleepy Sun - "New Age" The whimsical mountain dwellers Sleepy Sun have announced all kinds of fun things for May and June. All this month they'll be doing a European tour, including the ATP Festival in the UK (with Spiritualized, Devo, Jesus Lizard), then head back to the states for two record release shows, in the south and north, respectively: June 17 @ Eagle Rock Community Center in Los Angeles June 19 @ Great American Music Hall with Spindrift and Assemble Head in Sunburst [...]

Beginning like one of those woozy, boozy tracks by Brightblack Morning Light, and with harmonies at times reminiscent of pastoral folkies, Fleet Foxes, Sleepy Sun's 7-1/2 minute "New Age," provides many twists and turns and poses even more questions. Like what if that freaky, New Mexico duo, ever broke out of their sedate state and shredded? And what if Fleet Foxes used their harmonies for purposes of evil. With one shredding solo at the 2-1/2 minute mark, and a second freakout following four minutes later, Sleepy Sun answer those questions with an emphatic, "That sh*t would [...]

The day after I saw Sleepy Sun , someone asked me what type of music it was and I was at a loss for words to describe it. Their sound is unique, not in the sense of a brand new sound never heard before, but one that was created out of the influence of previous decades' music, choice uncommon instruments, and two striking vocalists. Six band members all contributing their craft is what I imagine has guided the sound of Sleepy Sun. A late 70's psychedelic instrumental back drop with a touch of maracas and [...]
Sure, I want to give you guys this MP3 of the a-side on Sleepy Sun 's new 10'', but I also want to let you in on something awesome: We're going to be doing a live-to-tape session with Sleepy Sun in September for the show/podcast. Good times, eh? It'll be a psych rock session for the whole family. If you want to snag the band's new 10'', take a gander over at ATP Recordings . Here's the aforementioned track from it: MP3: Sleepy Sun- "New Age" [...]
